Flores seems to have done a good job but it is a little odd that he had what, four offensive coordinators in three years (Co-coordinators this year after o'shea and gailey his first two years). I don't know if that was Flores's call, a decision by Grier, a decision by ownership, it's unusually chaotic and something you don't see that often in well run orgs.

I'd say "As far as I know" and "right now" were passive aggressive, but when has Culley been aggressive?
Some management grad student hard up for a project should look into this. I think the OC is pretty good and Lovie is a solid pro. Then you have Culley who I cannot get a handle on leading the coaching staff. I wish we had some Houston fans who could let me know what’s what.

I can't imagine Flores coming back for a few weeks to help out. He/his team is lining up coaching interviews as I type this. I'd imagine every job opening would be interested in him, and most are probably surprised he is now available.

Isn't that much more to do with the GM? As far as I know.. Flores wanted Herbert, but was overruled by the GM who picked Tua... perhaps that's his main problem? Is he the one hiring and firing his OCs? The main reason Flores seems to have been fired is because he didn't get along with the GM who has been there for 20 years and Tua.

As luck would have it, my boss is a Texans fan ... who grew up there and has followed them since the beginning. He says, talking to his circle, that there's some wish-casting going around that Cesario will bring in Flores, which in turn would get Watson to want to stay ... since, apparently, one of the reasons Watson wanted Miami was Flores.

My boss laughed it off ... but it does show the lengths of desperation in Houston, at least among the fans

O’Shea, it was said that the offense was too complicated, especially for a young team.
Gailey came on and it seemed like an odd (or short sighted) move at the time as it catered more toward Fitzpatrick, who had his best season under Gailey, as opposed to Tua.
Flores seemed to promote “his guys” this last time.

All indications have been that Flores has had a large say in the coaching staffs and the rumors have consistently been that he’s difficult to work with, which has led to many of the revolving doors and inability to recruit quality individuals in.

Dolphins ask for permission to interview Bills OC Brian Daboll. This indicates the talk of Flores issue being relationships, particularly with Tua, led to his firing. Bringing in Daboll to reunite with Tua would be a clear signal that this is Tua’s team.

Hope it’s a 120 hour interview

But seriously, when do these interviews take place for coaches that are on teams that aren’t yet eliminated? Now or after the teams are eliminated? Seems like could be a loss of focus if now

They changed the rule on this either last year or the year before. Think it is a 2 hour zoom or something like that. They thought they were hurting candidates by making “alive” team guys wait.

The assistants used to break free at some point during the week but this changed to virtual interviews since Covid. Zoom makes it more realistic than the old way of flying to and from an interview after a playoff prep practice.

One thing I'll say.... some of those guys weren't bad coaches. BOB was a legitimately good NFL coach, he was a TERRIBLE personnel guy. Josh was a mixed bag (also bad at personnel) but the guy went to and won a playoff game with Tim Tebow as his QB.

I think both those guys (and Flores) will be better the 2nd time around. Most of their failures (unlike Patricia) were personality and roster management related, not on-field.
that was john fox that won that game not McD allthourgh i give MCD credit for the 13 super bowl

Certainly the Tua part makes sense---but you also have to figure Daboll is going to hear from Flores the real deal on being there given their time together.

You think he would reject the interview for a Head Coaching job in the NFL for an non-doormat team bc Flores and the GM didn’t see eye to eye? I would find that hard to believe.

no, but I think whether he takes the job will be informed by how Flores perceived the front office and owner

I would way rather be rich in Miami than Chicago. It’s not even close.
He's an NFL head coach, he'll be outside his office or bed for like 8 hours the entire season. I'd go where I can win, then you can buy a nice vacation house for the offseason.

Man I don’t believe that for one second that Flores inability to work with his GM will play any factor. He’ll be interviewing them during the process as well.

I think most coaches would tell you that the GM and owner are a huge factor in whether they can succeed. I'm absolutely certain Bill Belichick has told Daboll that over time. So yeah, it matters and frankly you wouldn't want a coach who doesn't think it matters as they are at best worrisomely naive.

I don't think Daboll is necessarily going to conclude "if Flores couldn't get these guys to collaborate that means I can't either" but I would be stunned if he doesn't gather the intel and weigh it.

The single biggest reason that otherwise successful coaches are fired is that they cannot manage their relationship with the GM. The idea that it won’t be “any factor” in the decision of whether to offer him the job (or accept it) seems glaringly counter-factual.

I know on one of the podcasts recently (Athletic I think) they were going over the Jaguars' search and said several candidates weren't interested if Baalke was there, and that how his time in SF went (he was noted as stabbing guys in the back) meant his rep among coaches was pretty terrible.

This is every job when someone is fired. It shouldn’t bc Daboll isn’t Flores and by all accounts it was Flores who was the problem in multiple relationships. If Daboll passes on an offer it should be solely on HIS experience during the interview process.

You know what? I screwed up here by not reading back far enough. (I thought your comment was about Flores interviewing in Chicago, not Daboll in Miami.)

I'm the one who lost the plot. And I agree with you here.

That ownership/GM leaks more than Flores is not a reliable indicator of what went on. Maybe he's tough to work with----the number of OCs he went through is consistent with that---but maybe the front office is totally dysfunctional. You shouldn't take whatever you see reported as gospel, you know a lot of that is purposeful leaks.

This is all why the realistic expectation is Daboll will talk to various people---certainly including Flores andof course alos the GM/owner---to try to understand what he'd be getting into

The Flores communicator issue particularly with Tua ran rampant down here for two years until the soft end of season schedule. Wins silenced the detractors as they were more focused on how the team could get to the playoffs but this angle wasn’t something the front office just threw out there this week……it had been out there for awhile. Having said that, since it hadn’t been mentioned recently (again, Wins are the ultimate silencer) i thought the other rumor about Harbaugh was the catalyst for the firing. It now appears that it was the Flores/Tua and Flores/GM issues.

If the Giants keep Judge, it sounds like Aaron Rodgers wouldn't want to be traded there:

Rodgers: “You play to win the game. Nobody wants to be part of, like, kneeling the s--t out to take a tie. I would lose my mind. You know what would make me lose my mind maybe as much as that? Third and nine on the minus five, let’s go in goal line personnel and run a QB sneak.

McAfee: “You’d call a timeout there? Audible?”

Rodgers: “Call that one in, (Packers coach Matt LaFleur), and you’ll see what happens. That s--t ain’t flying."

Judge is probably the last domino to fall right? I would assume the open jobs are what they are:
Raiders
Bears
Broncos
Dolphins
Jags
Giants
Vikings

Carroll looks safe. Culley has an outside chance of being canned, but why bother?

People have mentioned Flores rejoining the Pats staff, which many feel is unlikely. What about Judge: would there be interest on either side?

New England just had its worst Special Teams season by DVOA since Parcells.
I would hire Judge back in a second and fire Cam Accord. That now poorly the special teams have been. They are lucky that Nick Folk has been reliable or it would look even worse.

Hard to tell exactly what the contract says but joe judge is probably sitting on a pile of money that gets offset by any coaching salary he receives from the Pats (but probably not broadcasting income) so his interest in being a special teams coach is, short term, about zero. But definitely open to the Pats improving the special teams coaching situation.

Mara got rid of taunting, his GM, and his coach in one fell swoop. Solid work by Mara, great owner, runs a phenomenal franchise. You can always count on the Giants to play tough.

I don’t know that I have seen a HC in the NFL talk himself out of a job that was presumably pretty safe up until about 3 weeks ago. All he had to do was shut his mouth, talk about how excited he was to get everyone back healthy next year, etc., and they were seemingly bringing him back.
I would imagine Brian Flores will be high on their list. New York native, all the charm of Joe Judge, plus winning football.

I don‘t think I want Judge coming back to NE. I think his image, for whatever it may have been previously, has been poisoned by how he has handled himself in NY. Want zero part of that, I don’t think players would take him seriously. I certainly wouldn’t.

Maybe, but from the Giants fans I have heard from there is a lot of blaming Belichick for Judge (sold Mara a bill of goods!) and it may be a hard sell to bring in another ex-Pats coach.

Bedard thinks Judge could be back in NE….as OC, if Josh leaves.

Even as a special teams coach? That seems strong. I don’t think they’d have the option to not take one of BB’s assistants seriously.

I just read that if a black coach gets hired away to be a head coach, the team he leaves gets a 3rd comp pick in each of the next two seasons. Holy hell, that means the Pats get two picks if someone hires Mayo. If the Pats offer Flores a bundle and bring him back for a year and then he gets poached, they'd get two more. A new market inefficiency, Bill?

Some guys like to be part of the locker room, like to coach. If he does, does it matter to him if it's partially from working a few weeks for the Patriots for some small amount when he still has all that coming in?

Afaik, this rule is for all minority coaches not just black. I think the 9ers got comp picks when the Jets hired Saleh.
