what is interesting, and I am not sure if we are going to be able to find out, but I would love to know how many of the players on the team currently in Toronto, would not have been there due to their COVID beliefs/vaccination issues if this series were say two weeks ago. Basically, I would like to know how many of these players, didnt believe in the vaccination, or werent vaccinated coming into the season, but when they realized they couldnt go to Toronto or were going to miss games, chose to get vaccinated.

This has been a known thing since January when Canada implemented the policy. There's been discussion about it since the CBA was adopted and spring camps opened. For the Red Sox, the deadline to get vaxxed was more or less Opening Day since it's two weeks after the (final if 2) shot is administered that the person is considered fully vaxxed. Players had the whole of spring training to get it done if they were going to get it done. We'll never know for sure which of them did it in Ft Myers, but I'm sure there were at least a couple.

Another impact, though not large in the scale of things... the team is bussing from Toronto to Buffalo where they will board their usual Delta charter to BWI. A Covid-19 test is not required to cross into the USA by land while it is required before arriving by air.

I think all MLB teams are doing this. Nobody wants to be stranded for 10 days in Canada for popping a positive test.

Are the Red Sox dealing more with COVID issues then other teams, or do we notice because we follow every scrap of news?

Perhaps a bit of both. The A’s, Giants, Mets, and Twins have all experienced significant COVID issues this season but none of the A’s, Giants, Mets, or Twins nearly Peacocked their way out of the playoffs last season, either.

I think we notice more because it's the Sox. Fangraphs Roster Resources shows 17 players across 10 teams currently on the COVID IL.

Missed one there (Strahm), but it's been quiet since early may.

Unfortunately, we're back. Hopefully this will be a Strahm-like blip. This seems to be the third? Arroyo related incident, going back to it derailing his 2021 season. (If I were as much on the cusp as he is, I'd play in a rebreather.)

But hey, the team's gotten by without a nominal closer for most of the season already, what's three more games?
Ugh.
Yeah, what's three games against a division opponent who is among our main competition for a wild card?

I know you are being sarcastic, but goddamn this sucks. He is just starting to find his footing in that role and then he'll be gone for an important series.

Yeah, if the Sox bullpen blows a late lead, there’s going to be a lot of “what-ifs” asked about how things would gone if Houck was available to play.

DO PEople think we would really allow that kind of posting to take over the main board?

Knowing that Houck won't be pitching for 4 straight days gives them the option of having him throw a bunch of pitches against Cleveland, who is also one of their main competition for the same wild card spots as Toronto.

Nearly 30 years old. Been around a while. Currently sporting a 3.16 era, 1.05 whip, and 10.3 k/9 with Worcester. Career major league numbers of: 92 g, 4.82 era, 1.32 whip, 9.4 k/9.

Meh. Whatever. He won't be here long.

So Braco and Volmer are on the taxi squad. What about replacements for Duran and Houck? Do we have to send those guys down to replace them? Is Seabold being added to the 26-man? There isn't anybody else on the 40 unless you want to see Jeter Downs again. I certainly don't.

Downs had two really good ABs I saw. One ended in a line out to the OF and the other a K. But he didn’t remotely look overmatched in either.

Duran and Houck go on the restricted list for the series in Toronto. Not optioned, not IL, which means they don't get paid.

I assume Seabold will be Houck's replacement, presumably to start tomorrow. He could then be sent back in favor of another reliever. As for replacing Duran, might be Wong (Downs I think has to stay down 10 days unless he's replacing an injured player) unless they can add someone from off the 40-man (like Sanchez). I know they can for a COVID IL replacement. Not sure about for a restricted list replacement.

Shaughnessy with a super tough but fair column ripping the shit out of Duran, Houck and Sale for leaving their team in the lurch.

In this region, Kyrie Irving is routinely mocked and scorned for being a selfish team-killer.

Swell. So how are you all feeling about Kyrie Houck, Kyrie Duran and Kyrie Sale at this hour?

I wonder how Red Sox players really feel? It’s always Hakuna Matata around these Sox with their laundry cart rides, postgame strobelight locker room disco dance parties, and NESN happy talk, but how would you feel if your .327-hitting leadoff batter, your white-hot closer (six saves in six tries), and (possibly) your $30 million per year erstwhile ace chose not to help you win important games in June and (maybe) September/October?
Duran has played only 13 games in the Major Leagues this year (46 over two seasons), but was an offensive catalyst when the Sox swept the Guardians in Cleveland over the weekend. He turns 26 in September and is battling to stay in the big leagues, but he says this is a “personal decision” and told MassLive, “I’m still doing my research.’’

Dr. Google, no doubt.

There was a time when a kid would do anything to get a day in the big leagues. Now the opportunity is dismissed in the name of personal freedom.

The aforementioned Houck made it clear he won’t take the shot, while simultaneously saying, “I’ll do whatever I need to help us win.” He said his family doesn’t believe in vaccines.

For what it’s worth, both Duran and Houck clearly don’t have a problem with needles. Both players have more tattoos than Lady Gaga and Harry Styles.

The anti-vax Sox have another minor leaguer, outfielder Ryan Fitzgerald, a former independent leaguer who has clawed his way up to Triple-A Worcester, but told the Globe’s Alex Speier, “If I miss my [big league] shot because of that [no vaccination], it is what it is. I’m not going to think twice about it.”

Boston’s young holdouts have a role model in Sale, who told us last year and again this spring that he is not vaccinated. Sale’s status has yet to be a factor because he had Tommy John surgery in 2020 and broke a rib during rehab over the winter. It will be interesting if nothing’s changes this summer when Sale presumably will be pitching and the Sox finish their regular season with three games in Toronto on the last weekend of September.
It has nothing to do with politics or science. It’s an issue of professional athletes being available to compete. How many of you have jobs where there are no consequences when you choose to make yourself unavailable for work?

The Yankees took care of the issue in April. All Yankee players did the team thing.

Not the anti-vax Red Sox. The Sox last year were the only one of ten playoff teams that failed to reach the 85 percent vaccination threshold and now they are a playoff contender that won’t say anything to offend players who care more about personal freedom than their commitment to the team.

Wonder what Ted Williams would think? Williams didn’t talk about his “personal freedom” when he was called to serve his country in World War II and again in the Korean conflict. Williams flew 39 combat missions in Korea and lost almost five seasons of his prime while serving his country.

Today the Red Sox have players who care more about their personal freedom than helping the team.

Oh… that Ted Williams reference is a beauty. Loathe him or hate him, the man can write a column.
Agree to disagree I guess. I agree with the overall point of the article but still couldn't make it through the quoted pieces. Kyrie Houck etc. Bleh. Not a fan of his writing style at all.

Really wish people in the organization would call out these guys or at least throw out how it would be helpful to have them in an important series....

I'm a big Ted fan - wore the #9 all through my sports life because of him. But what is the point about Williams? He was recalled by the military in Korea - he didn't really have a choice. And if he DID have a choice, he would have been exercising his "personal freedom" to make a choice that negatively impacted the Red Sox since, you know, he wasn't there for them.

I'm not denigrating Ted at ALL for any of this - just wondering, really, what Shank's point is there.

I was more impressed by Shank's ability to randomly call up Ted Williams to try to cement his point, than I was saluting it as a triumph of logic.

I kind of wonder WWTWD too, but want to be careful not to take the thread in the wrong direction.

Count me in with the crowd that thinks the Ted Williams reference is terrible. The example makes the complete opposite argument - Ted placed a personal value above the team (and rightly so in that case!). And the extent to which it was a choice at all is questionable. To make the point that he is trying to, he needs to find an example of a player making a personal sacrifice for the good of the team.

I agree with Shank's basic point here, but the article is garbage.

I think the team may have felt Houck’s absence in the 9th tonight. I’m reasonably confident that the Sox would have had a much better shot at holding onto that lead with him closing this one out. And I’m out of words for my disdain for him and his cohort.

Agreed.

On a related note, perhaps it’s too early to make this call, but the first two games in the hardest portion of the season do not bode well. I hope I am wrong…

I consider @ Guardians the series that begins the challenging spate of games, so they are 3-2 so far, not 0-2.
