2022 Dolphins: Our coach is cooler than yours

Congrats on your season. Any team that puts up a fight while starting their low drafted third string QB on the road in a playoff game deserves to feel nothing but good things about an effort like your team delivered yesterday.

(Now back to my usual Dolphin-loathing.)

Seconded. For the first time in a very long time I actually found myself pulling for the Dolphins. That is usually solely reserved for when the result can directly benefit the Pats. Obviously that wasn't the case yesterday.

Piling on with one-time respect for the Fish.

Something encouraging is that a couple of things that couldve been better for them should be easily addressed. The most obvious is Thompson, he acquitted himself fairly well, but it’s always a good start not to have your low-pedigree and inexperienced third-stringer start a road playoff game. So don’t do that again.

Clock management and burning times out and getting plays in in a timely manner in the second half also definitely did not help matters. I think that’s something McDaniel can easily address by developing a new process this off-season. Though I guess Andy Reid is still working on it. Also, see note on third string QB above.

I thought Miami had a lot of luck yesterday with some lucky bounces, drops, and some misses on throws Allen usually makes. More of an any given sunday feel to me than really putting up a tough fight.

But, that stuff counts too and Thompson wasn't horrendous in a very tough environment. The Bills kept going for home runs to put the game away, and the shots were there, but they also couldn't run the ball very well so MIA deserves credit there.

Was it weed or tobacco? The former might explain some of the playcalling snafus.
Seriously, that could definitely explain why the Dolphins literally couldn't get a play in on time for the entire 4th quarter. That was crazy. it was every play, never seen anything like it.

But if McD was blazing, then it all makes sense.

Heard a clip today where McDaniels said on the 4th and a foot, he thought the referees had signaled first down, so they had first down vs fourth down personnel in the game at that time.

That's a weird excuse considering he was literally standing next to the yard marker.

I'll also chime in that I too was pulling for Miami yesterday, too bad and as has been stated, that horrible interception handing the Bills the ball on about the 35 changed the whole momentum of the game.

Ok, now that that's over with, I can go back to hating them.

What was up with Mcdaniel seemingly vaping on the sideline during the game?
I would say that most people of his generation and younger don’t care about this at all. I have no idea if the league has a policy against it. They may.

As to why he would be vaping? Probably anxiety. Whether it be tobacco or not. I don’t think it had an effect on the game at all. Play calls have come in late from McDaniel all season long.

McDaniel said they were told it was a first down, but then clarified that it was someone on the staff that said it was a first down and they ran out there with a play and personnel for 1st and 10 not 4th and 1.

Obviously really poor situational coaching and readiness there, but he wasn’t just staring at the scoreboard high for 30 seconds and then sent in a play.

You never see coaches smoking on the sideline, even back in the days where everybody smoked, right? You'd think it's not a look the NFL would like.

Unless they're getting paid for it...

McDaniel probably has anxiety. I mean, fuck, look at Uncle Pete - dude chomps on gum like he’s a cow with cud.

Taking drags on the sideline is very unusual, though. But more unusual than George Siefert compulsively blowing on a mint three times before putting it in his mouth? You be the judge.

Vaping is a terrible look for a coach, and I’m not a prude about that stuff. But, if you’re asking people to play through hunger and fatigue and pain, maybe put the binky down for 3 (here, 4) hours.

This was infuriating. I get that you're on the road with an inexperienced QB in a stressful situation but come the fuck on. You have to be able to do the basics. Pre-snap errors of all kinds drive me insane. There's almost never a valid excuse for it.

It was weird, but it seemed like they re-pumped the play clock to 25. At least if I am remembering right. That would be consistent with confusing him about whether it was a first down. I think when something happens that is the result of game administration — like moving the chains or equipment problem or ball kicked or bad spot — the ref can restart the play clock at 25. But even with the 25 they goofed.

I don’t care if he is vaping nicotine. It’s a cognitive performance enhancer.

Wasn't there footage back in the day of Jim Leland smoking cigarettes in the tunnel down the stairs from the dugout?

Not saying it's right, but pretty sure it was him they had footage of.

That's funny.

These days, the NFL does prohibit alcohol and tobacco use on the sidelines. I think it was Zimmer that got busted a while back hiding his chew in a bag of sunflower seeds.

I'm as liberal as they come when drugs are involved, but I want zero part of my head coach getting high during a game. If it's nicotine? Who gives a shit. But the difference between my HC having 3-4 beers to loosen up, or ripping hits is no different. I don't want him buzzed, regardless of the drug (unless it's coke or speed, I'm cool with them thinking 46 plays ahead).

I don't get the 1st down/4th down confusion as an excuse. Suppose the Dolphins didn't get the 1st down - shouldn't they have had a 4th down play dialed up to go? It's inexcusable that they had 25 seconds to respond and utterly failed to do so.

I don’t think the issue was they didn’t have a play prepared so much as they figured it out so late that they subbed out personnel with like 12 seconds left on the clock.

Again, stuff like that is extremely sloppy and inexcusable. I expect McDaniel and the offensive staff to evaluate how to make the pre snap operation more efficient because late snaps and wasting timeouts to avoid delay of games happened all season long.

Maybe quit getting high during the game?

McDaniel never called plays before, right? I would fully expect it to improve.

Yes. First time head coach. First time playcaller. I would expect the same. Lead a top 10 offense his first season with a QB everyone assumed was a bust and Skylar Thompson seeing action in 3 games.

I think McDaniel has earned himself a fair amount of leash and I would hope we see a tighter operation in year 2.

Thanks. Thought I had seen that previously. Some growing pains are to be expected. Overall an excellent job by McDaniel and he certainly earned a long leash.

Did anyone ask him about it? Whatever he was vaping (assuming he was – I found that video to be a little inconclusive?), it’s a little weird to be doing that on the sidelines as a head coach of an NFL team in 2023.

Does anybody remember when cigarette companies convinced the general public that smoking wasn’t bad for your health? Good times, right?

I can’t even believe we’re having this discussion. If McDaniel was vaping on the sidelines he should be fined or fired, and I could give two shits if “the kids” don’t have a problem with it. I mean, what the fukk? It’s a HORRIBLE look and message for the public.

I didn’t see the game and this is the first I’m hearing about it, but good friggin grief.

Fined, maybe? If the NFL has a strict policy against it, sure. If they have some clear evidence, clearer than the one clip that we’ve seen, that he was violating the rules, go ahead and fine him.

FIRED? That has a zero percent chance of happening.

The NFL has players getting spinal and brain injuries and dropping dead on the field. A coach hitting a vape on the sideline is the literal least of their messaging issues.

Its no more than a probable fine for violating a league rule. To the NFL, its like wearing the non-official brand of fedora to pay homage to George Halas.

Why the images from Big Tobacco’s heydays? I’m talking about this being a horrible look in the year 2023. Showing a photo of another player or coach from the 50s, 60s, 70s or even 80s doesn’t excuse McDaniel’s daft, tone deaf, present-day behavior. It was WRONG, particularly all we know about impact of smoking and vaping on public health. And I hope he is fined accordingly.

What is wrong with you?

Do you eat McDonalds or any processed foods? Drink coffee? Alcohol? Saturated fats? Bad look. Not cool. We need to be better as a society or else everything will crumble into an abyss.
