Derby tomorrow......Lots of really good horses. Tons of buzz about Crown Pride, from Japan looking absolutely amazing since Wednesday. Need to look into this all a bit further before hitting the window. But Giddy Up

I don't think there's really any 'normal' behavior for thoroughbred horses on the track. I've seen some wild shit in my dozen or so days at the races.
I've been to way more races than a dozen in my life, and this is absolutely true. I've owned percentages of 3 horses over the years. Very little a layperson can know just watching a horse on the track.

I was just texting my friend, whose family owns the stable I've invested in. They run at Saratoga, Belmont, etc. and he wrote immediately after the race "Unfuckingbelievable, that horse was juiced." I wrote back "seemed like he could have run 2 more miles" and his response was "Right now, I'm curious if he survives long enough to get out of the winner's circle."

So who knows. This was just such an out of nowhere win and horse racing has lost the benefit of the doubt that it's definitely a legit, albeit incredibly sad possibility.

I'm sure they're no longer running, but what was the final update on your horses? I enjoyed the thread you started and remember how excited you were to finally but into it.

Actually turned out to be a good investment in the long run, paid back about a 75% profit over 3 years. One horse never really got it going, one was fairly average, but ran pretty consistently and seemed to bring in some steady paychecks, and the third was a good horse, won 2 races before they put him into a claiming race and he was bought.

Fun time, the stable is still taking investors and regularly putting together offerings, but I just haven't gotten around to jumping back in again, although I still watch and gamble on a lot of races.

Wanted to add my two (late) cents on Saturday. I think I've mentioned it before, but I work in the racing industry on the media side.

Question one about the horse being drugged/juiced, I don't think so. His trainer has been around forever and never won at a percentage that suggest he uses nefarious means and Churchill had excellent surveillance this year. I actually think this is what happens when it's a "clean" race. They went too fast up front and the closers mowed them down.

The horse had won at Churchill before and had a very good five furlong workout over the track on the 27th of April. He just got lost in the shuffle b/c he wasn't in the race until he scratched in and then had the outside post to boot. He had the right kind of breeding, too, as his sire Keen Ice's two biggest wins were at a mile and a quarter and his dam was a Canadian champion who was third in Queen's Plate (basically the Canuck Kentucky Derby) against males. I couldn't have found him but in hindsight he did have some things that made him intriguing.

And on him biting the outrider horse after the race; he did it before the race too. Some horses are just assholes and like to bite; hell they do it during races to each other sometimes.

Watching the Melbourne Cup on FS2. The world’s richest two-miler, which is a race I admittedly have never heard of.
