I think they go for Zacha either way, it's more of a longterm play, but it's definitely concerning that he hasn't signed yet. This seems to be following the Krejci path from last season.

Potential tin foil hat theory - they don’t make Zacha a QO, And this was just a creative way to offload salary to make room for Krejci/Bergeron.

I don't think they can do that. The QO deadline was on Monday, so Zacha was qualified by New Jersey so the Bruins now own that offer. I don't think you can rescind a qualifying offer.

I'll be honest, I'm a little nervous that we haven't heard anything from Bergy or Krejci yet.
My hope is there are like 6 dominos that all need to fall at once, and are just taking their time to line everything up. It’s not like they should have any competition for signing them, they don’t have to get it done immediately

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but is there any reason the Bruins can't wait to sign Krejci and Bergeron until after the season technically starts so they can use the open LTIR space?

Only if there's some kind of Ruotsalainen Rule still on the books, but even then, that'd more apply for a European-based player coming over mid-season. It's why the Leafs had to put Harri Sateri on waivers last year, only to lose him to the Coyotes.

As long as they don't play in another league, they can sign whenever. They just have to be signed by the trade deadline to be eligible for the playoffs. If they played in another league, they'd be subject to waivers.

That said, there's no chance they'd wait that long. They have the LTIR but they can't bank it for future use. They can only use it while the players are on IR. The injured guys are going to be back in November/December. It's a lot harder to clear salary in November and December than it is today. Teams have cap space available today but it's getting gobbled up.

It may not need to happen today, but if the Bruins were ever willing to move on from Brandon Carlo, this is the time. Next season, a 10-team NTC kicks in. Not onerous, but it would limit options that aren't limited today.

Porter says he doesn't expect the Bruins to announce Bergeron or Krejci today, thinks they're still in talks.

This still makes me feel a little uneasy.
I don't feel uneasy about Bergeron. Poitras said he got a text from Bergeron and Montgomery spoke to him first. It feels unlikely that he'd be THAT engaged in organizational business without a firm understanding. Krejci is a bit more concerning to me. Especially the way they are talking about it.

Could it be that they don’t want to play on an incentive based deal?

I'm surprisingly at ease about the Krejci and Bergeron situations. I mean, of course I want them to run it back as they're the leaders of the best and my favorite Bruins teams of my fandom. But even if they do come back it would be a huge accomplishment to make it past the first round [insert Taranna jokes here]. IOW, it would still take a lot for them to be bona fide contenders. If they don't come back, then the team finally has to tack in a different direction which is at most a season away anyway. Their performance and the team's performance next season, won't hugely impact how I view or feel about them (barring a total collapse or a deep cup run), so it's just a matter of whether I get to root for them one last time.

I'm assuming the incentives will be a joke to reach(like Iginlas were). They'd hit them 100%, it's just a cap maneuver.

I would guess Bergeron's already agreed to how much he's getting paid this year and the Bruins are just working on other moves to figure out how much of a cap hit they'll take from him this season, and how much gets pushed into next.

Still nothing on 37 or 46. I have to imagine at this point their waiting until they clear salary. Cap Friendly has them at $4.7 million under the cap. Zacha's in arb and his QO was $3 million, so he alone will eat up most of the available cap space. Studnicka is also still unsigned and he's no longer waivers exempt.

Foligno would seem to be the guy they need to move, but I assumee they'll need to attach someting to him to entice a team. He was paid a bonus on 7/13, so his salary this year is less than his cap hit. He also can't be bought out if Zacha gets an arb award because he doesn't meet the $4 million threshold. The only other option that makes sense to me is Craig Smith. He should have some kind of value, though his deal was backloaded so he's owed more cash than his $3.1 million cap hit. There's been Forbort/Reilly chatter but given the way the Bruins value depth at D, I don't see it happening. Especially since they are going into the season with Grz and McAvoy out for an extended period. If they traded one of those guys, say Reilly, they'd be left with Lindholm, Carlo, Forbort, Clifton, Zboril, Ahcan, Carrick as their D until Grz and McAvoy return. I just don't see that happening.

How much can they realistically add to the pot (if any) via quarter-season LTIR usage for McAvoy, Gryz and Marchand (assuming Bergy and Reilly can start season on time)?

A lot but they'd have to ship something out in a couple months to become cap compliant when those three are ready to come back.

Those 3 add up to about $19.2 million in cap space. I think they could use some of it, but not a lot. They can't bank the LTIR space, so they need to realistically be able to activate those guys when healthy. I think they could use $1-$2 million of LTIR while they are out. It's a little easier to move that kind of money around via assignments/waovers/another LTIR injury in season then trying to clear $5-$10 million (see Golden Knights, Vegas).

Thanks guys. Wonder if they can find takers for Reilly and/or Forbort once McAvoy and Gryz come back. That way they can cover for the first quarter of the season but not get stuck with a 6M third pairing or even worse a 3M seventh D man.

I don't think that's very likely. There's just no trade movement in the NHL until the month or so before the deadline. Teams are capped out and won't be looking to add that early.

If you hold out for something like that you run the risk of not being able to activate Grz/McAvoy when they're healthy which would be a disaster.

Then at least one of them has to go now.

I just don't think they're comfortable doing that. I think it's more likely a forward goes. Hypothetically with 37 and 46 back, and including the injuuries, this is something approximating what they'll be looking at

Hall - Bergeron - DeBrusk
Zacha - Krejci - Pastrnak
Frederic - Coyle - Smith
Foligno - Nosek - Steen
Wagner, Studnicka

Lindholm - Carlo
Forbort - Clifton
Reilly - Zboril
Ahcan, Carrick

If they have to deal, it makes much more sense to do so from the forward group. They are better positioned to withstand a loss up front than they are on the blue line.

For real! I even had every hockey card from those teams and never heard of this guy.
Funny I thought the same exact thing.
Really interesting career: 6 seasons over 10yrs spanning 93-04, 92 total GP in NHL, 38 of those came in 94-95 with the Bruins. 1 career G came in his final season with WAS in 04.

OK. I feel better now. I was a big Bs fan then and I don’t recall Gruden at all (& I say this as someone who has very vivid memories of Greg Hawgood & Bob Beers)

As a long time Bs fan who is not as rabid about the team as I used to be I’m curious as to what you all think will happen with Bergeron/Krejci. Will they sign both? If so how do they fit within cap (35+ contracts, buyouts, LTIR, some combo).

Seems like it could go in several directions, depending on what Neely/Sweeney are considering.

That’s a loaded question. Personally, I think Bergeron & Krejci both play for the Bruins next season. It ultimately won’t be good enough to win the Stanley Cup, and we’ll be in pretty much the same place next summer.
