I think Charlie and Marchand were also on that trip at some point. I'll take em all! (except not Lucic and Krug's contracts)
Looch is in the last year of his deal and only owed $1 million in actual salary. Nostalgia gets the best of me, I still miss the big fella. Let's see...Foligno for Lucic 50% retained!?!

Who wouldn’t? I think the realities of Lucic’s deal and all make him good value moving forward. (At 1M/yr, not 2 or 3) Maybe at the deadline.

Still no action on Bergy and Krejci as we hit August. They looked happy at the Rask wedding, so I'm assume they are done but the Bruins are trying to sequence things and get other business done first. There is a pressure point next week with Zacha, his arb hearing is 8/11. They either get a deal done before then (and reports from Zacha's agent have been that it's close if not done) or accept the arb ruling. There's also the Pasta extension which the FO said they would be aggressively pursuing. I kinda wonder if that's what's holding back putting the finishing touches on Bergy and Krejci. Since they will have to go the bonus route with 37 and 46 this year, they'll need to take into account the overages that'll be charged on the 23/24 cap. In order to better plan, they probably need to know what Pasta's number looks like for that season.

It's unusual for this FO to have this much business to spill over this late into the offseason, but we'll see how it shakes out.

Another sneaky problem for working in overages for 2023-24 is Swayman is due for his first extension, as is Frederic (him, I'm less worried about for the time being).

Back half of that deal is gonna be very ugly, but gotta give Treliving credit for steering losing Gaudreau / Tkachuk into as small a relative speedbump as you could ask for

So with Bergeron and Krejci inked, here's where we are at:

Marchand* - Bergeron - DeBrusk
Hall - Krejci - Pastrnak
Zacha - Coyle - Smith
Foligno - Nosek - Wagner
Steen, Frederic

Lindholm - McAvoy*
Grzelyck* - Carlo
Reilly - Clifton
Forbort - Zboril

Ullmark
Swayman

According to CapFriendly, that roster is $1.6 million under the cap. Zacha is unsigned.

They may be able to get away with not trading anybody if they're OK using LTI. They can waive and demote Steen and Wagner to free up another $1.8ish which gets them at $3.2 million in cap space. I think Zacha will come in around $4-4.5 million. So they are $1.5-2 million away. That may be a reasonable number to try and manage through LTI. They have more than enough to start the year and the way injuries tend to pile up, it doesn't seem far fetched to have a rolling $2-3 million on LTI. If they do get everyone 100% healthy, it probably won't be all that hard to trade Nosek, Clifton, Frederic.

If they do go the trade route, I'm almost certain it will be an F. The D depth is too compromised to be trading from.

I'm assuming it will be a very interesting trade deadline. Lot of dead money on the books next year. If they are in contention, many picks will be going out the door in GFIN mode. If they are not, lots of salary dumps.

Should be a wild ride this year.

My sneaky move: if Lysell impresses enough in camp to stick, trade Smith for a pick, and when healthy, run:

Marchand-Bergeron-DeBrusk
Hall-Krejčí-Pastrnák
Coyle-Zacha-Lysell
Foligno-Nosek-Frederic

McAvoy-Carlo
Lindholm-Grzelcyk
Forbort-Zboril

PP1: Marchand-Bergeron-DeBrusk-Pastrnák-McAvoy
PP2: Hall-Zacha-Lysell-Krejčí-Grzelcyk

Agree that it is a GFIN year, but they don't have a lot of flexibility cap wise or with future assets. They are either just under or over the cap, have a lousy-ish farm system and are without their 2nd in the next 2 drafts in the Lindholm deal. FWIW, I'm not sure if it's an organization rule or just something they are concious of, but they have never traded their 1st round pick in back-to-back years. They aren't exactly in a position to dump everything at the deadline to try and get over the top.

I think what we see is what we get. At full strength they are certainly better than last year. Full season of Lindholm, Krejci, and Zacha is an upgrade on Haula. They're banking on that plus internal improvements under Monty.

We'll see. I'm not sure it's enough, but I also don't think they had much of a choice.

Counterpoint - they don't have a lot, but I would be willing to empty every shelf we have for one last run if it meant Bergeron gets a second Cup. I'll accept 5-10 years of suck for that.

100% agreed. I just think there's a lot of hurdles to make it happen.

Have they hinted at whether they see Zacha as a center or a wing? I assumed wing, but if he can hack it in the middle, Krejci playing on Bergeron's wing might be a better fit for him at his age.

My assumption would be they'd put Krejci and Pastrnak together and might have even been a "requirement" for Krejci coming back

I like this as well. I have a feeling they try and give the kid a look next year.
I like this as well -- I recall Butch saying something to the effect last year that Lysell was a possible call up for the playoffs so it stands to reason they are going to give him a close look come training camp. A third line manned by Coyle with a NHL ready Lysell and a motivated Zacha is something one can dream on -- and, of course, the offseason is for dreaming.

According to KPD, Lysell has gone from 5'10", 170 to "nearly 6 feet and 180 pounds " (whatever "nearly" means and whatever it's modifying in that phrase).

A beefed-up Fabian Lysell, 19, could be the next big thing for the Bruins - The Boston Globe

Sweeney chatting today

- Said Bergy and Krejci took a while due to cap constraints and figuring out the money
- Cap wise they are fine until November. Have run the math and have mechanisms (trades, waivers) to get under when they need to be.
- Talks with Pasta are ongoing, no timeline.
- W/R/T Lysell, said there's always an opportunity for a younger player to make the team and they won't hold the best players off the team.

Are the B’s confident enough in Swayman to send Ullmark to Vegas to clear up the cap space?
I doubt it. They seemed to work decently as a tandem in the regular season, and while I think the split will favor Swayman this season, it won’t be overwhelmingly so (like, 46-36, if not closer). Now, next season, when Swayman’s due his first extension…

Not to mention the depth behind Ullmark/Swayman is Keith Kinkaid, Kyle Keyser and Brandon Bussi.

Kinkaid is vet with some NHL experience but has played a total of 16 NHL games over the past 3 seasons. Keyser has been in the system for a while but last season was really his first full season with Providence. Bussi was a UDFA signing from Western Michigan and has 5 total pro games. None, in my opinion, are viable NHL backups. The goalie musical chairs is basically over so there's no trade or FA signing available.

As I've said before, and @MiracleOfO2704 mentioned above, I think they could explore trading Ullmark next offseason. Swayman ELC is expiring so they'll need to make some kind of committment to him after this year. If he shows he's a starter and gets starter money, then they can explore trading Ullmark who has a full no-trade relaxing to a 16-team no list.

Corey Pronman’s Pipeline Rankings are out. Bruins set the floor. Not a surprise, as very few neutral sources like anyone not named Fabian Lysell in the system, but yeah. The Cliff Notes:

-Only sees Lysell, Beecher, and Lohrei as potentially getting decent NHL time
-Maybes for guys like Duran, Poitras, Lauko, Locmelis, and Harrison
-Swayman and Studnicka aged out of the list; it’s safe to assume anyone he didn’t otherwise mention isn’t likely to be an NHL player of any sort

Like I said before, both Pronman and Scott Wheeler have been very bearish on the Bruins system for a long time now. The problem is, you won’t find many non-Bruins analysts who feel in any way positive about the system.

Marc McLaughlin? Georgii Merkulov? I think that they could become full-time NHL players.
I think McLaughlin missed his arbitrary age cutoff by a few days. He just turned 23 at the end of July.

Merkulov is a lazy omission. Some of the prospect followers have him included in the top group with Lysell, Lohrei and Beecher. Not even getting a HM is just Pronman being lazy. I believe he left Swayman off his list a year or two ago. Jellvik had a monster year and has generated some buzz. Not a peep. Kuntar, Spicer some other intriguing prospects he didn't mention.

The ranking is whatever. They're definitely closer to 32 than 20, let alone 1. But the rest of the article is lazy and sloppy. He ranked 3 guys (I wouldn't even call them the consensus top 3 because some would include Merkulov) then picked a few random names and wrote a one or two sentence blurb.

par for the course with Pronman. I dnot think the bruins system is any good but promman is always the lowest on them of any of the prospect guys and his analysis is frequently pretty lazy. I’m not a fan.

Another goal for Beecher today. Don't want to get too worked up over these rookie games, but 3 goals in 3 games is definitely an encouraging start.

I'm not sayin', but I'm just sayin'. This is a picture inside the Bruins equipment room. Now it's quite possible Z is storing some stuff there this summer as he's been playing pickup with the team.

He wouldn't be playing with that stick. That's an Easton and probably at least 6 years old. Chara's stick is such an oddity I can see why an equipment guy would keep one around.

And even if he were still playing with an actual Easton stick, they'd put the current branding on it. From looking at last year's pictures on the Islanders, he was playing with a Warrior True last year.
