They can't be on Hard Knocks, they made the playoffs last season. Making it in either of the prior two season makes a team exempt.

Losing out brings two things. A higher draft pick which is desperately needed along with a minimum number of Primetime games. Probably just a Thursday and Monday. It would also probably lead to Hard Knocks for the Patriots.
You’re right, of course. Multiple prime time games is usually the result of on-field success the previous year(s), so ultimately I’d rather live them. But in a year like this, happy to have one kicked back. Particularly in the midst of this idiotic run of the schedule they’re on.

Has there been any update on Hoyer? Not that I want to see him in a game, just concern. Didn't seem like that bad of a hit, but I guess concussions can be fickle.

I’m guessing Hoyer is also caught in a roster crunch and so he will biding his time on IR unless Mac or Zappe gets hurt.

I’m wondering more about Barmore and, to a lesser extent, Cannon. Clock’s up on both of them, right? Eligible to return? Barmore is clearly the better of the two, but we could use the body at RT.

I think Barmore still has to miss 1 more game. He was inactive for a few weeks before he went on IR after a setback.

Cannon is eligible to return to practice this week. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s done given age and prior injury history.

What’s the appropriate gift from a QB to a WR after a throwing a hospital ball. Does Mac get Jakobi a nice steak, or is this going to cost a Rolex or an SUV?

Patriots special teams have been at (roughly) or above league average every year since 1996, according to Football Outsiders metrics.

This year so far they are 27th in the NFL, with only the punt return unit (thanks, Marcus Jones) keeping them out of the cellar.

basically what you'd expect from the eye test.... PR unit is excellent, Kick return units is pretty good, FG/XP unit is average.... kickoffs and punts are terrible.

And the PR unit gets dinged for the (at least two that I can remember) dumb running into punter penalties (against Minnesota and Miami) that led to TDs after the penalty gave them the ball back (albeit in the Miami game, they had to convert 4th and 1). They had another one against the Jets in the 2nd matchup, but it was 4th and 12, so the Jets punted again. (Although that punt was a lot better than the first, IIRC, although how much of that was due to the running into the kicker).

Bailey's injury screwed them in more than one way.

Ineffective as he was (probably because he tried to play through it), I still think if he could punt at the same level as he had this season (maybe he couldn't even do that); he was at least as good as they guy that replaced him.

Plus, he was the holder and Folk has not been all that good since he departed.

Anyone know Bailey's status? I know he was practicing the other week but haven't seen any updates. Any chance he's activated this week? Is he even still practicing?

Just like we were blessed with Brady for 20 years, we've been equally spoiled in specialists during the dynasty run. Vinateri and Ghost were, as a whole, well above-average kickers for their 18 years combined under BB. Then we luck into the combo of Folk and Bailey. As we're seemingly now learning, Bailey was the difference maker for Folk, as he went from out of the league to a top 10 kicker (averaging the 2019-2021 league years together) and now back towards the bottom post-Bailey injury.

Their combo allowed BB to run with just two kicking specialists too, freeing up a roster spot for gadget players like FBs or an extra ST guy. Since the Bailey injury, he's snuck Vizcaino back and forth on to the gameday roster to do kickoffs over Folk when the roster was otherwise healthy enough to spare that luxury. That breeds more inconsistency in the ST unit. And if Bailey has a long term injury, he's going to be a tough cut, given the $4.5M in dead money he'd accelerate on a year they'd be looking to reload. Sure, that's not a ton, but it's tough to swallow paying that AND finding/paying a decent replacement punter and kickoff guy.

"Know" is a strong word, but via Twitter Bailey has not been spotted at practice the last few days and is on I think Day 15 of his 21 day practice window to come off IR. I didn't copy all the relevant tweets, but in the midst of the good news about Marcus and Jonnu being back at practice, Bailey still seems to be absent.

View: https://twitter.com/ByChrisMason/status/1611056432404893697?s=20&t=pzqWndJW1BbCNWONgrmHoA

Chris Mason: Marcus Jones and Jonnu Smith are both back at Patriots practice. No Davon Godchaux or Terez Hall. Specialists were away on the upper fields, but I didn't spot Jake Bailey either.

View: https://twitter.com/ezlazar/status/1609311406448320513?s=20&t=pzqWndJW1BbCNWONgrmHoA

And then Evan Lazar from Jan 1: Also worth noting: the Patriots once again didn’t activate P Jake Bailey from IR. He has ten days into his 21-day practice window.

Miguel of PatsCap fame says that because they were suspended (1) they're not paid for this week and (2) Bailey loses his salary guaranty for next year, which means he can be cut for a small cap saving (he had 2 million or so in guranteed salary).

Pure speculation but I'll bet that for whatever the reasons they were doing their own thing rehab wise or skipped a practice or something and the club took a hard line--seems rather unlikely that the same rare designation for two players who to be honest don't seem to have much else in common.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots placed four-year veteran punter Jake Bailey and rookie cornerback Jack Jones on the reserve/suspended list on Friday.

Both players had been on injured reserve -- Bailey with a back injury, Jones with a knee injury -- and the Patriots reverted their suspensions to Dec. 31. This puts two game checks in jeopardy for both players and could threaten Bailey's guaranteed money from a lucrative four-year, $13.5 million extension he signed in August.

When a player is placed on the reserve/suspended list, it voids future guarantees, but a player can challenge that in arbitration.

Bailey, who was a first-team All-Pro in 2020, had been placed on injured reserve on Nov. 19. He was enduring a season in which he plummeted to the bottom of the NFL rankings with a 42.1 average and 35.3 net.

The Patriots officially designated Bailey to return from injured reserve Dec. 21, and he participated in parts of practices the next two weeks.

According to a source, the team suspension is due, in part, to differing viewpoints on if Bailey was ready to return to game action.

As for Jones, he injured his knee on the opening series of the Patriots' 27-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 12. In the locker room after the game, Jones told reporters he didn't believe it was a serious injury, but the team eventually placed him on IR on Dec. 31.

Reporters saw Jones last Friday emptying belongings from his locker into a large bag, which seemed to indicate he was leaving the team instead of continuing with his rehabilitation.

A source said the suspension is related, in part, to Jones being fined by the team for missing rehabilitation appointments.

Jones' agent, Jamal Tooson, said in a statement: "Jack is focused on recovering and getting back to help the Patriots as soon as possible. Regarding the suspension, it appears to be based on miscommunication regarding Jack's rehab process. I'm hopeful we'll reach an amicable resolution for both Jack and the Patriots."

Not overly worried about Bailey as he was certainly gone after this season. But they spent serious draft capital on Jones and he was doing well for a rookie DB. Hopefully the sides don’t get too dug in and they can work something out so he’s not cut this off-season for some reason.

Why was Bailey certainly gone? He has a long term deal in place that had a substantial guarantee; absent it voiding, hes pretty much guaranteed to be on the team next year as the dead hit would be really significant if he wasnt.

Jones was a 4th round pick; seems hard to qualify that as serious draft capital. He's arguably produced more value in his rookie season than the median 4th rounder does in his career.

Edit: Part of the reason Jones was available then was a reputation for not being a mature person. His cover talent is clear.

They spent a 4th round pick on Jones so the world won’t end if this doesn’t end well but he clearly was looking like a keeper so that would be the real disappointment for me. I have no idea what’s going on here. You’re a rookie in the NFL. Unless the Pats were trying to rush him back, I have no idea why he got sideways during rehab.

He effectively flunked out of USC; for a 5 star recruit, that's pretty frickin hard to do. It is unfortunate that he cant keep to a serious rehab, but it shouldnt be particularly surprising given the history.

I assume that showing up on time for rehab is like showing up on time for meetings. Zero tolerance. So I'm not ready to declare either one of them as problem people. Yet.

Jack Jones apparently unfollowed the Patriots on twitter and, per reddit, at one point liked a tweet that basically asked if the Patriots were trying to tank.

Which, of course, is stupid, with 1 game left. The tweet he liked has since been deleted.

I’d really like to know what he is upset about. He got a great opportunity here and performed.

I will be pissed if Jack Jones ends up flaming his way out of Foxboro. He’s a really good player and a blast to watch.

Well, at least the grievance will force BB to tell what the supposed rationale is. If this is just a charade to void the balance of the contract, BB will get whacked. Perhaps this will force Kraft’s hand in dealing with him.

I’m not accepting the agents spin as gospel. BB does seem to be hard line about showing up on time and doing what the program asks of a player. At least in Jones’ case, if that wasn’t done, he shouldn’t be surprised that are consequences. I’d like to see some independent reporting to confirm whether Bailey really was a perfect attendee.

If this was happening, wouldn’t it be a higher priority to get Jonnu’s 2023 partial salary guarantee voided than Jake Bailey’s?

Really? We’re already onto the clearing the way toward ushering Bill out the door posts? Over an underperforming punter and a rookie DB with a history of maturity issues?

Ditto. It was a lot more tolerable when they were going 12-4.
You had absolutely no idea what was even happening in either of these situations, and it turns out now Jones was not respecting the process and showing up late repeatedly to rehab. What exactly do you want BB to do?
