Yeah, Sheffield wasn't simply name-dropped in the Mitchell Report. He admittedly was involved with Balco and infamously and unquestionably used "The Clear & The Cream", although with the laughable excuse that he only did so because Bonds told him to and not to question him about it, which left Sheffield shocked when he later found out it was a steroid. He was also historically bad in the field, although during his early days in Milwaukee that was helped along by the fact he wasn't even trying since he was forcing his way out of town. If anyone is using steroids or character issues as a factor in their voting, they should be aware that there were few players more reprehensible than Sheffield during his era.
Sheffield played nearly his entire career in the pre-penalty era. You can draw a reasonable line between guys like him and Manny and A-Rod who continued to use and were suspended for it when the rules were in place.

When you say “continued to use” regarding Manny and A-Rod, we know A-Rod used pre- and post- testing rules. Do we know Manny used before 2004? Not saying he didn’t, but I wasn’t aware of any evidence of use until his 2009 suspension

Results are in this cold, cold wet day... Results are as follows for 29 ballots:

22 votes were required to pass the 75% threshold for induction:
  • Ortiz: 29 ballots, 100% (probably not a surprise for our sample population).
  • Bonds & Clemens: 25 ballots each, 86.2%
  • ARod: 23 ballots, 79.3%
On to next year:
  • Manny: Just missed, 21 ballots, 72.4%
  • Rolen: 20 ballots, 69%
  • Andruw Jones: 15 ballots, 51.7%
  • Gary Sheffield: 11 ballots, 37.9% (His candidacy seems like it should be much closer to Manny's IMO; I think maybe the inherent bias of our voting block might be peeking)
  • Billy Wagner, Todd Helton, and Jeff Kent: 9 ballots each, 31%
  • Bobby Abreu: 3 ballots, 10.3%
  • Jimmy Rollins: 2 ballots, 6.9%
Not close, so no cigar and off the ballot after 10 years:
  • Schilling: 7 ballots, 24.1%
  • Sosa: 5 ballots, 17.2%
2 votes were required to clear the 5% requirement to stay on the ballot, so these candidates are also off:
  • Papelbon and Lincecum each received a single ballot ( 3.4%)
  • Vizquel, Pettitte, Buehrle, Hunter, Hudson, Crawford, Feilder, Howard, Morneau, Nathan, Peavy, AJP, and Teixeira did not garner a single ballot listing.
Of course, I invite anyone to double check my count. It is a holiday after all...

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Yes: Bobby Abreu, David Ortiz, Scott Rolen, Todd Helton.

Big Nos: Bonds, Clemens, Manny, A-Rod, Schilling.

I would not vote for any PED users, before or after MLB's testing regimen. This is because PEDs were actually illegal. People had known about their problems since well before the 90s, one of which was they squeezed otherwise viable players out of the game by prolonging careers, altering bodies, and skewing results. As far as I'm concerned, Clemens and Bonds don't have the benefit of any doubt. They can come clean and say they were juiced to the eyeballs, and make a case they should be in. But absent that, they're out.

I would not vote for Schilling, who I think is a marginal (but viable) candidate based on numbers. If a character clause ever meant anything, it should be applied here.

So you would also vote to kick out Mays, Mantle, and Hank for using amphetamines, right?

This ballot would change the percentages slightly but not affect the results listed.
