Here
Looks to me like Hurley and Lakers used each other for their own negotiating purposes, knowing full well it would never work out.

I was expecting something like 8/120. Six seems too short and wtf do they care about the dollars?
Wos on the Ringer's postgame podcast last night said that he thinks the Busses don't really have the money to overpay a coach, otherwise Ty Lue would be the Lakers' coach. I think the Busses are like Mark Davis/the Raiders - their only family asset is the team, so they don't have the same pool of money to dip into as the Ballmers/Lacob types; the money actually matters to them.

I don't know enough about how costs can be amortized by sports teams or the Lakers ' finances to know whether he has a point.

Hurley played this perfectly. Get an NBA offer from the Lakers while negotiating with UConn. I can’t wait for that reporter to ask Hurley if he plans to give any of his money back to UConn.
Lakers did too. Now they can hire JJ (their original plan)

The Lakers situation is one of the worst in the NBA. They aren't even be close to being a contender, they have zero assets of any kind and they are a franchise being held hostage by Lebron James. Its a team that really should blow the entire thing up because they are going to be stuck in mud for a long time.

They have the goodwill of a top-2 loyal fanbase, arguably 1, and of playing in LA. Those are 2 valuable "assets"

This. The Lakers look pathetic for not landing their guy. And they'll be on their 8th coach since 2010.
That really is amazing when you think about it. 8 coaches ago for the Celtics almost gets you to KC Jones. And the Lakers did it in 14 years.

LeBron holding them hostage isn't top 5 worst issues.
They have a terrible owner. That's the biggest issue, roster issues are 2-3 year problems, bumbling incompetence in ownership can last decades

No chance. There are probably 15 franchises that are in worse shape than LA. They have AD, they have Lebron, they have Reaves, they have 3 picks to trade, and they have the fact that they are LA.

One theory might be that the fan base can't whine about bringing in Redick if they very publicly tried to sign the "best coach available" and were rebuffed.
Bingo. Lakers nation is beyond fed up with the lakers management. Going after hurley was seen as a real serious grown up move. Now they have cover to hire a podcaster.

Yup, the future picks have mostly reset, and they're more valuable because the Lakers aren't that well-run.

They can go star-hunting this summer, and land someone quite good.

From worst to not-as-bad:

Brooklyn
Washington
Detroit
Charlotte
Phoenix
Chicago
Atlanta
Toronto
Utah
Sacramento
Memphis
Portland

After that, you start to get into Lakers range.

I wonder if Hurleys equation was an aging Lakers team controlled by whims of LBJ 3000 miles from his home base fell far short of a legit shot at a 3peat in Storrs + a seat among college legends + a possible NBA coaching gig of his choice in NYC, if Dolan tires of Thibs or he chooses to cross the bridge to Barclay and explore the charms of Brooklyn Heights. It ain't Jersey but it's close.

Wow, that is pathetic. Worry about hiring the right coach, not about your fanbase's perceptions.

I hope Reddick turns them down. It's a bad situation - though I agree with Moops that it is nowhere near the worst - one that is challenging to navigate for any coach, let alone a first-time coach.

As odd as it sounds, $70 million really is a cheap offer when Hurley's family is decidedly happy at his current position and he is likely to get UConn close to a wash with a raise when factoring in cost-of-living and taxes. The Lakers had to hit 9 digits for it to be an offer Dan couldn't refuse. But to be fair, a uniquely late-career LeBron problem that the Lakers are hedging is they are trying to find a coach both for the win-now period as well as the upcoming desert during the rebuilding period once LeBron retires. Putting out a boatload of cash for a coach who may be leading a doormat as soon as 2-3 years from now does not seem like a great investment.
The $70 million really is shocking. The numbers being bruited about were plus $100 million. I wonder if that was leaked by Hurley's camp to lay out what the expectation was? Who knows, but it is of piece with the incompetence of the Buss family. Not as bad as the Ty Lue fiasco, but....similarly penny-wise/pound foolish. You want Hurley: go out and get him.

I just hate billionaires who whine about being poor.

The Lakers are cheap, they probably didn’t even want to pay 70M.

I always got the sense Hurley was looking around for another big offer to help negotiate with UConn and wasn’t too serious about the Lakers. Probably asked Woj to publicize it.

The funniest part is the bitching and moaning of Laker fans. Funnier still the ones consoling themselves because the Lakers have “18 titles”. Their salary tears are very nourishing.

No it really shouldn't. Your ego can't get in the way here.
Wouldn't be so much about ego as some level of concern over how the organization will be run. They just fired a guy who (by all accounts) was a great prospect in Ham after one year, now botched this with the Woj leak...maybe they'll say all the right things to JJ, but it's not the best look.

It's a mistake to think of the Lakers as a unified entity. Think Game of Thrones, palace intrigue etc. The source of the Hurley leak is likely an opposing faction to the JJ stories (Klutch, Lebron...).

He may want to renegotiate but he did sign a 6 year, $31 mil extension in June 2023.
Hurley has to have been negotiating with UConn during this process. There is no world in 2024 where he wasn’t and doesn’t already have the parameters for a new deal in place. I fully expect a new deal to be announced in the coming days/weeks.

The logo was one of the game's greatest. On and off court.

Sad but weird he passed when the Celts were on the cusp of #18. He probably didn't want to see one more.

Tough week for the Lakers

1) Hurley turns them down
2) Passing of West
3) Celtics up 2-0 in the finals that would put them ahead of LA in the all-time tally.

Tragic.

4) Died a Clipper.

But seriously. Rip, true legend. Incredibly cheap of the lakers not to have him in a consultant role the last decade so he can be part of their family.

Yeah, and kind of sad that the last two times he was in the news was the JJ Redick plumbers and fireman comment as well as the grossly cartoonish version of him portrayed in Winning Time. A guy who gave that much to the game as a player and GM deserves much better. Hopefully he's long remembered for being a genius on and off the court.

His finals numbers are still insane to this day.

The only positive from his passing is it will bring back into the headlines his exit with the lakers and how shitty they were to him.

People in the media have been debating about who the Finals MVP might be, which got me thinking to 2008 when the beloved David Stern said, “It is the Truth: the MVP of the 2008 Finals is Paul Pierce.” And that got me to wondering, where have all of the good nicknames gone? I look at this year’s All-NBA class, and other than the Joker, we have creative nicknames like “SGA” or “KD”. “Ant” is fine, but why aren’t there good nicknames for more stars?

After watching these Finals Sam Presti should be offering everything not nailed down to get Lauri Markkanen (as long as his agent back channels extension #s)

SGW, JDub, Dort, Chet with Markkanen will spread the MAVs, NUGGETs & WOLVEs.

Then they can bring Joe, Wallace, Wiggins, JWill, and Kenrich off their bench
