I’m more curious about the identity of the pitcher. Couldn’t find any who literally never pitched again, but found a few clunkers that might fit. My official guess is Matt Young.

I think Bloom was throwing shit against the wall for SS. Mondesi, while having some upside wasn't likely to be much better than the not great options they already had. He's just another bridge guy who may have better versatility as a utility guy.

The sooner Hernandez is moved off of short, the better.

My initial thought for the lefty was Frank Viola. 3 year deal, but 3 all star games and pitched two more awful seasons. But ya, it's gotta be Young.

That may have been a public service, keeping him out of circulation.

Young only if the guy's career ended concurrent w/the poster playing golf with him. Young stopped pitching in 1993, 30 years ago.

Sounds like some pitcher from the Zimmer ('79 or '80 when the team was on the way down) or Ralph Houk years (81-84), perhaps even the Johnny Mac first year.

He really disliked Hubie Brooks because Brooks "owned" him. Hated the DH cause he was a great bunter. Loved pitching at Fenway cause he'd just "bust'm" inside.

Sorry I can't keep up with ya'll. I'm not as knowledgeable with stats....just a life story. I also met and played a few rounds with a lefty reliever that was pretty good with the O's for a few years but I can't remember his name. Nice guy. Not a bad word about anybody. I've got more but......

I'll stop as I've already derailed your thread

It's an irrelevant comparison anyway, the Sox didn't give Mondesi a big new conract, they just traded a reliever who was stuck in the 40-man roster crunch for a guy who might fill a bigger need. And if he doesn't, it's not like his $3m spent elsewhere would have made the Sox a WS contender.

An update. I talked to one of my old friends in Florida and I asked him about this guy. He said that the Sawx invited him to spring training and he was dropped. Shane Rawley bullshitted me over beers. I just want to put the record straight. Sorry for saying something that wasn't totally true. It happens.
