Lombardi said he was the favorite earlier today on his pod but said it was "hearsay" so he wasn't reporting it. M. Lombardi is really starting to develop some sources.

Thought Wilkes should have gotten his shot given how that team responded to him, but Reich is a good coach.

That’s an interesting hire. I thought Wilkes deserved a chance with how the team played, but if they are intent on drafting a QB, an offensive guy makes sense.
Wilkes has lawyered up:

The legal team that represents Steve Wilks, the Carolina Panthers’ interim head coach for the final 12 games this past season, is not happy after the team hired Frank Reich as the team’s new head coach

“We are shocked and disturbed that after the incredible job Coach Wilks did as the interim coach, including bringing the team back into Playoff contention and garnering the support of the players and fans, that he was passed over for the Head Coach position by David Tepper,” Wigdor Law wrote in a statement on Twitter.
The next Panthers coach -- Reich in this case -- is absolutely doomed, so Wilkes may have dodged one here. But there are only 32 HC jobs, and only 6-8 openings per year, so I imagine Wilkes is wondering if he'll ever get another chance. I only watch the Panther by accident, like when I lose the remote in the couch cushions and can't change the channel, but from what I saw Wilkes rallied a truly awful team and got them to at least be competitive.

Good for Wilks. He’ll probably suffer the consequences of challenging the status quo but help the guys behind him.

So Flores’ lawsuit now has at least one other Coach filing a lawsuit as well. The NFL still sucks but that is progress.

Like is too strong. He has had some success, he has experience, worked under Saleh’s best friend in GB so besides direct knowledge, Saleh knows the score on this guy better than I do, flamed out as HC, keep door on Rodgers open. Also seems like a soft touch which was a critique Steve Young had about MLF interactions with Zach (being a hard ass).

Absolutely sucking in Denver is not great, doesn’t seem like a leader but that’s not the job.

Wilks joined the lawsuit in April, so not new, his lawyer just pointed out that this is more evidence of the issues they were already suing over.

I think he will sit out as well waiting for either the Chargers or Cowboys position to open up.
I know that a lot of people talk about Payton to the Cowboys, but I don't see him taking a job without power, and I don't see the Joneses giving up that power. They like guys like Garrett and McCarthy

Seems like Demeco to Houston. Wonder where that leaves Denver.

Nothing official yet that I see but a lot of smoke. Lombardi also saying it and he has been good this year (Reich(Carolina), Moore(out in Big D)).

Seis años is a big commitment, but I'm sure his argument was that the team is a ways from competing, so he needs a long-term deal.

And now the Niners go hunting for another DC.
I understand they are talking to Fangio. Posted multiple times.

Imagine being the guy people would rather work with Russell Wilson over
I think it's more about being tied to him, I would guess DEN told Payton he could move on from Russ after a year if he wants (also, Payton only got the job because Ryan said... no thanks).
Just based on the cap, my guess is coaches are being told 2-3 years at least with Kyler. That's tough with any QB that isn't elite.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird that after all the hype we were sold about SUPER BOWL MASTERMIND SEAN PAYTON that he was offered and accepted a semi-unappealing job as a fallback plan for some other guy?

I assume he was also offerred an absurd amount of money. I think his market was also limited, you have to be a team that wants to win now, and is willing to trade a 1st plus for him. Also, he probably thinks he can fix Russ, who has the best track record of the QBs in vacant jobs by a good margin

Here
We'll never know but I wonder what soured Caley and the Pat's? Weird he is seen as a rising star everywhere but BB didn't feel compelled to lock him up.

This is what I don't like. You already have little experience and continuity in the offensive coaching staff, why not extend yourself a little to keep Caley? I guess he wasn't really all that motivated to stay after being passed over last year, but still.

I doubt it came down to money. McVay’s staff is probably a better gig than BB’s staff for an ambitious assistant. Could also be that Caley learned from his interviews for OC jobs that working under a different coach, in a different system, will help him build his resume.

It is a little strange, but at the same time I'm not sure how much he's really "rising". That sounds like his agent talking. He didn't land any OC jobs and went to a staff that suffered quite a few departures to do the same job he had in NE. It's more surprising that BB didn't let him have more of a playcalling role this past year. Clearly there was a need and there's plenty of precedent for the "no title but call the plays" role.

Yeah if Caley was a rising coaching star, he'd have been running the offense in 2022 like McDaniels did in 2005 and like O'Brien did in 2009. The fact that he wasn't spoke volumes to me.

Also, the Pats have not exactly gotten great results out of the TE position, despite investing a ton of $$ in 2021. Maybe that's more of a black mark on the pro scouting side of things, but it's not exactly a gold star on his resume either.

Has anybody ever come back to the league in a coaching capacity after a fairly long absence and been any good? (I can't remember if Gibbs had any success)
