I wish. The closest I ever came was when I was first a student and then a teaching faculty member at the Naval War College, when one of the grizzled veteran faculty was a member. He wrangled a deal where the good club offered 10 annual temporary memberships for $2,000 per year to active duty officers passing through the college. I scarfed that up and played maybe 100 rounds over 4 years. Great course. Great experience. Great memories. My best score was an 84. I couldn't come close to that now...even from the yellow tees. Are you a member there?
Interesting though, the clubhouse itself is crap compared to any upper-scale course. I mean, the interior layout is garbled, crowded, disjointed, and jangled, not even offering a decent lounge or bar. But hey, it memorializes the tradition of one of the first original six courses. Just suck it in and STFU. What would you expect from a clubhouse built in 1893, despite extensive renovations in 2005 (largely in anticipation for the 2006 US Women's Open). But it's still a piece of [less than stellar offerage].
I was also a walking scorer in the US Amateur at Newport in 1995, in which Tiger added another trophy to his case for the 2nd consecutive year. I didn't get assigned to any of his matches, but I remember following his group during the final match against Buddy Marucci. It was a nip and tuck match but Tiger won 2 up
