Fat chance. There are posters who PRIDE themselves on spoiling picks, like they want to leave the impression that they're a key member of an NFL war room or something. It's one of the oddest things I ever see on this site. Like anyone couldn't learn the identity of picks earlier than on ESPN/NFLN if they wanted. No spoilers, at least until the Pats pick? Maybe? Pretty please?
Eh, I hate having two threads to follow. Not going to bother. Especially if the Pats end up picking at 3. I can wait 20-30 minutes to catch up on the thread.Just put "no spoilers" in the title and somebody else can start a thread where spoilers are allowed if they want. Then anybody that spoils a pick in this thread can eat a ban. (That's how this seems to be handled on other sites anyway.)
That doesn't work. The spoilers are so eager to show off their spoiling capabilities, they infiltrate the non-spoiler thread. They salivate at the thought of it. It's really the strangest thing that ever happens on this site (and that's saying a lot). As a guy who gives much thought to psychology (but isn't classically trained in it), I find it fascinating.Just put "no spoilers" in the title and somebody else can start a thread where spoilers are allowed if they want. Then anybody that spoils a pick in this thread can eat a ban. (That's how this seems to be handled on other sites anyway.)
Yeah, this is the strategy. Just have to have a feel for when not to refresh. This is the compromise.Eh, I hate having two threads to follow. Not going to bother. Especially if the Pats end up picking at 3. I can wait 20-30 minutes to catch up on the thread.
Because if we're watching the draft, it's better to watch it be announced on TV than it is to read a post that says "Odunze" or "It's Fashanu" or whatever. I don't know why exactly, but maybe because when I see it on tv I know it's official?I never post spoilers on draft day threads, but I don't get what's the issue in wanting to know the pick ahead of time. It's just Goodell reading names off a piece of paper, what's the problem in getting the information a few minutes earlier? Not like the announcement itself is meaningful.
Not sure about the ban, but that's how it generally has been done here (NBA, etc.) of course what generally ends up happening is the spoilers allowed thread is the one everyone posts in and the no spoilers thread just dies.Just put "no spoilers" in the title and somebody else can start a thread where spoilers are allowed if they want. Then anybody that spoils a pick in this thread can eat a ban. (That's how this seems to be handled on other sites anyway.)
Yeah, I wouldn't spoil it for people who want to know the draft pick in the moment on live TV, I just don't really get why knowing it from Goodell instead of Schefter matters all that much. I guess when you're at 3 it makes more sense to just wait for the official announcement, but when the Pats were drafting at the bottom of the first I always looked for it ahead of time. But no matter where the Pats draft, the spoiler (obtained from twitter or wherever) only come 30 seconds before the actual pick on ESPN/NFLN. I liken it to watching a Bruins OT game and someone who's at the game posts "Pasta scores!" 30 seconds before we see it on tv -- just takes the drama out of it. What really gets me is that people are asked not to do it, but they have some need to do it so strong that they can't help themselves. I think these same people enjoy making prank phone calls.Yeah, I wouldn't spoil it for people who want to know the draft pick in the moment on live TV, I just don't really get why knowing it from Goodell instead of Schefter matters all that much. Yeah, but that's a sporting event. The uncertainty of the result and the process is 90% of the enjoyment. It'd be the equivalent of you knowing beforehand the Bruins scored, but wanting to wait for the official announcement of who actually scored. But sure, I agree, just don't spoil it for people. But no matter where the Pats draft, the spoiler (obtained from twitter or wherever) only come 30 seconds before the actual pick on ESPN/NFLN. It's often more like 5 minutes. But honestly... I can't remember very often that the non-spoiler threads get posts about it. Generally nobody uses that thread. I just checked last year.... nobody spoiled the pick in the no-spoilers thread (because nobody posted in it), 2022.... same thing. But no matter where the Pats draft, the spoiler (obtained from twitter or wherever) only come 30 seconds before the actual pick on ESPN/NFLN. I am the same way - drafting at the bottom of the first, I just wanted to know.Yeah, I wouldn't spoil it for people who want to know the draft pick in the moment on live TV, I just don't really get why knowing it from Goodell instead of Schefter matters all that much. But the bolded is true of a Pats draft pick, too. There's some drama and uncertainty in watching the Commissioner take the stage, slowly make his way to the podium, and slowly say, "With the third pick in the 2024 NFL draft, the New England Patriots take . . . Spencer Rattler, QB, South Carolina."Yeah, but that's a sporting event. The uncertainty of the result and the process is 90% of the enjoyment. Right, I've concluded that I'm in the minority in not wanting picks spoiled (but I disagree that people didn't spoil picks in the "no spoilers" thread -- maybe not last year or even the last few years, I don't know as I've adopted the strategy of just not cruising SoSH when the Pats are on the clock). It's often more like 5 minutes. But honestly... I can't remember very often that the non-spoiler threads get posts about it. Generally nobody uses that thread. So really what it seems like is very few people care about not be spoiled, and they cant get a discussion thread going.
If you want no spoilers... create a thread with "no spoilers" in the title. It's unlikely it will get a spoiler post. It just also won't get many if any posts at all.
Yes, it's not just the Pats's big picks, but also the big picks of other teams. Our eyes are certainly going to be glued to the draft when Chicago and Washington are on the clock at 1 and 2.The drama starts with Washington.
Sorry. I woke up amped for the draft! Happens every year -- I don't pay much attention to it and then lose my mind about it the week of. After four years of shitty QB play, following 30 years of very good and gold-standard QB play, I'm ready for a top QB (prospect). With 9 of the 21 posts in here, I'm still not sure of Ferm's position on spoilers. Can someone help me?
Looks like ESPN+, ESPN app, YouTube, and TikTokDoes anyone know how to watch the Pat Mcafee show before and during the draft? I have never watched it live before and I really want to see BB talking draft geekage during the draft, rather then ESPN or ABC talking heads.
I think that they've done this every year going a long-time back. The first pick always takes the full 15 minutes. (Or am I wrong?)I really hope NFL network/ESPN doesn't force CHI to wait out the 1st pick just for the talking heads.
Aside from it being only a 10 minute clock now, it does usually take at least 5-7 minutes, even with guys like Lawrence.I think that they've done this every year going a long-time back. The first pick always takes the full 15 minutes. (Or am I wrong?)
Usually pretty close. Everyone has an interest in eyeballs. Even the team making the obvious pick gets to hog the attention for that period of time.I think that they've done this every year going a long-time back. The first pick always takes the full 15 minutes. (Or am I wrong?)
Okay, thanks. I forgot that they dropped it to 10 minutes.Aside from it being only a 10 minute clock now, it does usually take at least 5-7 minutes, even with guys like Lawrence.
I just found video of the 2021 draft, when Lawrence went 1st - the Jags took 8+ minutes before the "pick is in" appeared on the ESPN screenOkay, thanks. I forgot that they dropped it to 10 minutes.
Okay, that's a good comp. Lawrence may even have been more of a sure thing than is Williams (100% to 99.99%).I just found video of the 2021 draft, when Lawrence went 1st - the Jags took 8+ minutes before the "pick is in" appeared on the ESPN screen
No, because the Pats could trade while they're on the clock, or they could take McCarthy or MHJ. (In fact if the Pats do trade, it very likely will occur while they're on the clock and not before - the trading partner likely will want to make sure that their guy is available at 3.)Isn’t the “spoiler” going to come when Washington picks anyway?
I sympathize with you, but what kind of info will you be looking for in this thread at that point anyway? If Washington drafts Maye, just log off SoSH for 10 minutes. No, because the Pats could trade while they're on the clock, or they could take McCarthy or MHJ. (In fact if the Pats do trade, it very likely will occur while they're on the clock and not before - the trading partner likely will want to make sure that their guy is available at 3.)
I like seeing it unfold on tv too, don’t get me wrong. But even when people say “we are trading down” before Roger says there is a trade, it doesn’t seem that spoilerish to me. In fact, usually the way you find out about trades is that the logo of the team on the clock just silently changes. So there isn’t much drama anyway. No, because the Pats could trade while they're on the clock, or they could take McCarthy or MHJ. There's a difference between a person wanting to know as soon as they possibly can, whether by TV or twitter, and that person feeling the need to post that for others to see, especially knowing that a lot of people want to discuss the draft *without* those spoilers. You (not you personally, just a general "you") want to know early? Great. Follow Schefty. But you don't need to pass that on before it gets announced on TV.I'm gonna guess a lot of the "No Spoilers" brouhaha is generational. Older folks accustomed to watching television and having television be the seminal source of information appreciate the drama playing out on their console (even if the "console" is an iPad). OTOH folks raised in a digital generation don't revere TV as much, and are just as happy to know what they're gonna know as soon as they can know it.
I just used the word "brouhaha", so it's probably not much mystery which I prefer.
Oh, I agree. I'm in the non-spoiler crew. I enjoy riding the suspense with my SoSH buddies. And I think two game threads, at least through the Pats' second rounder tomorrow, is a good solution. There's a difference between a person wanting to know as soon as they possibly can, whether by TV or twitter, and that person feeling the need to post that for others to see, especially knowing that a lot of people want to discuss the draft *without* those spoilers. If you'd read all 10,000 of my posts, you'd see that that's what I do.I sympathize with you, but what kind of info will you be looking for in this thread at that point anyway? If Washington drafts Maye, just log off SoSH for 10 minutes.
That's a good point and I'm going to check the ages of the serial spoilers! (At 54, I'm an "older folk".)I'm gonna guess a lot of the "No Spoilers" brouhaha is generational. Everybody trying to get a ticket to goJust got an email reminding me of my tickets to see the show Hadestown at 7:30 tonight. Ugh!!!!!
The show any good?Everybody trying to get a ticket to go
But those who go they don't come back
Yes, when they say, "I don't know, it could be the big offensive lineman from Florida State here", you know it's going to be the big offensive lineman from Florida State.Spoilers or not, I can’t take the act of the analysts knowing the pick and having to drop little hints to the live tv audience so they sound smart.
