What a final round and back 9 by Scottie.

Awesome, that was great, the putt on 17 was electrifying.

That was a great tournament. I’d like some sort of team component but the only 3 spots matter works well.

It helped a lot it was Rory(until splash) Rham, Scheffler, Matsuyama, and Fleetwood. Plus that French dude. Solid leaderboard.

I also would love a team event but if they are going to play a tourney, it coming down to the last shot and the World #1 winning isn't bad.

Yeah the stars buying in helps a lot. It felt like a big tournament which it hadn’t in the 2 previous Olympics.

Rahm near tears after the round with $0 purse juxtaposed with his decision last winter sure is something.

(Also maybe if he played 72 hole tournaments more often he wouldn’t have had a car crash at home 64)

Definitely. I think 2016 was the first one in ages, so it was novel but the biggest players didn't go. I have a memory the players were worried about Zika but maybe they just didn't want to bother and that was an excuse.

Tokyo with the time difference meant watching the final round at 3am.

This tourney was perfect, everyone in Europe and the US could easily watch during waking hours.

This is gonna be a really tough call for Player of The Year...

Any ordinary year and two majors is better than one. But One major and Olympic Gold is also pretty impressive plus all the other wins.

One Major, Olympic Gold, and The Players Championship plus the other wins. A lot of people consider the players the 5th Major, and it is the biggest payout aside from the FedEx bonus. I think Scotty wins POTY unless Xander wins the FedEx final.

I think it was Scottie’s before this week.

Arnold Palmer Invitational
The Players
Masters
RBC Heritage
Memorial
Travelers
Olympic Gold

None of those are cheap. He’s made 17 starts in 2024 and has finished in the top 10 in 15 of them. He top 10’d in 2 additional majors.

Xander’s 2 majors weigh more for long term legacy but I think the volume for Scottie is tough to ignore for a single season award.

Last regular season tournament is supposed to get underway today but the tropical storm might bring a washout.

Some interesting field notes for the Wyndham
  • Spieth is the biggest name in the field. He's 62nd in the FedEx Cup so he'll likely make the playoffs but would need to get into the top 50 to gain entry to the signature events next season. He's also hinted at undergoing surgery after his year concludes.
  • Rickie Fowler is a playoff DNQ. Not in the field this week, 102 in the FedEx Cup.
  • Nick Dunlap enters at 65th despite being one of 3 players (4 if we included Rory winning the team event with Lowry) to win multiple tournaments this season. Since he was an amateur when he won the Amex, he didn't get the FedEx Cup points. It was bumpy from there but he won the Barracuda last month as well to move up to where he is now. Same boat as Spieth, probably good for making the playoffs but top 50 is the real prize to get into the signatures next year.
  • He's not playing this week but last years FedEx Cup champ, Viktor Hovland, is sitting at 55th and has work cut out to try and defend at East Lake as well as qualify for the signatures.

Women’s Olympic Final round is underway. Morgan Metreaux (Switzerland) and Lydia Ko are tied at -9. Rose Zhang is tied for 3rd at -7. Nelly Korda lurking at -4.

This is indeed tough. Who is the last guy to win two majors and NOT win POY?

Nick Faldo (British Open, Masters) lost to Wayne Levi in 1990. Not sure of the politics/reasons for that, or if there is another example more recently.

If you weight the Players and Olympic Gold as like .5 majors each then they are tied in majors Scottie has 4 more dubs. And another factor is Xander was in the field for all of Scottie’s wins.

Hideki has a 5-shot lead entering the final round in Memphis.

Nick Dunlap in 2nd. He struggled after winning the Amex as an amateur but has come on of late, winning the Barracuda last month.

Scottie, Zalatoris, Burns and Hovland among the chase group 5-7 shots back. Don’t think Hideki gives it up but could be interesting if Hideki makes an early bogey or two.

All time tough ending for Tom Kim. Ranked around 45-47th heading to 17, he proceeded to get two doubles in a row. Now he's sitting at 51st.

Brutal.
