100%

There is nothing worse than a couple of guys pressing, but only a couple of guys. The commitment has to be shared to reap the benefit. It’s conceptually simple but very costly in both physical and mental energy. It has to be a defense-as-attack mentality- if you’re not looking to spring runners on the counter the moment one guy forces the turnover, what’s the point- and if only a couple of guys are freelancing with the heavy press, all it does is create huge holes in the middle of the park.

That’s on the manager

Big Sam has his detractors, none more than me, for the way he takes glee on playing anti-football- but his approach, where he literally lines his lines up on the practice pich with a rope stretched touch line to touch line and forces them to move in unison, like schoolboys- a few afternoons drilling like that wound have improved this side, and that’s sad.

Nobody in the world has been upset that they watched Ted Lasso, other than to say “I wish i’d watched that sooner.”

my experience of the watch-only-three-guys-press-and-see-a-half-acre-of-green-space-open-up-for-the-attackers is mostly watching Everton under Rafa, Lampard etc.

Tangentially, I find the Southgate Discourse boring and generally annoying because it’s rooted in a belief that England should be winning more than they are. Which, like, they’ve been super successful under Southgate and none of their tournament loses have been upsets. I’m sure if England switched to Potter right now they’d get a new manger bump for 12 months…but I kind think England is just a high level but not dominant squad at the moment. Which is really good and all but a handful of countries would swap places with them right now.

He did a lot of good for the national team and it's unquestionable that he's the second best manager in their history. But it's time.

I think a lot of people forget that just before he took over they had bombed out against Iceland in humiliating fashion and could still be counted upon to muck up any PK situation. He imbued a ton of confidence in the players, improved their PK taking and approach, and generally got much better results than his predecessors. He's limited tactically and that eventually proved to be his ceiling.

That said, I wouldn’t hire him to make pizza. He’d used ingredients past their expiration date, then do something like put the cheese directly on the peel with the dough on top.

I think his biggest flaw as a pizza maker is that he’d put too much pepperoni on one part of the pizza and too little on others.

Bild are suggesting Tuechel has interest in the England job. It would be hilarious for him to lead this team on a blitz through qualifying next summer, get England dreaming, and then have a massive public falling out with the FA that leads to him resigning in December 2025.

He'd be so afraid of burning the pie that it would come out all soggy in the middle.

With Southgate gone i'm really hoping Steve Clarke does the decent thing and steps down, even though he's got two years left on his contract. It's shit being the worst team in the tournament. I watched in total about an hour of Scotland's anti-football and even that was too much for me.

Big Ange when asked about his name being rumored for the England job. Legend.

Two months later, UEFA confirms what anybody with eyeballs and a functioning cerebral cortex knew at the time - Cucurella should have been called for handball and a penalty in extra time against Germany. PL ref/VAR duo Anthony Taylor and Stuart Atwell felt otherwise.
