That doesn’t make any sense to me. If they’re free agents, the instant the season ends they’re no longer team property. They’re free to sign anywhere they want but they aren’t eligible for the expansion draft. But they can sign with GS.

So that’s a weird system.

They are still team property in a sense because the team can core status them (if they're still eligible) and then they can't go anywhere. GS can draft one of them and core status them if they want to guarantee at least 1 year of a name player to build the team around, or they can wait until free agency, but then they need to convince the player to pick them over any other team.

Thanks! My understanding of the expansion rule is that each team can protect six players, and the rest are up for grabs. But obviously you can't protect your free agents. So the Sun will protect Carrington, Mabrey, Olivia, and Harris, but I don't know who else.
You can protect free agents because Golden State is allowed to draft them any 1 free agent currently tied to a team and gain whatever rights they have (including the ability to core status them)
Note that Bonner has been "Cored" 3 times in her career so she cannot be retained. I think in this case the Sun have no rights to protect her in the expansion draft as a result. So they could keep either AT or Jones (one player can be cored). Of course I can't easily google how many times each player has been cored, it is just publicized that Bonner and Tina Charles have exhausted their career limits and can no longer be retained in this manner. FWIW, an unprotected Bonner would likely make it known she doesn't want to be drafted by an expansion team at her age and threaten retirement.

This also means that as opposed to losing FAs with only cap space to show for it, the Sun can essentially do a "sign and trade" if the one player they are allowed to core opts to go to another team. The player is allowed to refuse a trade to any team. So for example, if making AT a core player you either sign her to a Supermax one-year deal, negotiate a long-term deal, or the Sun can negotiate with her preferred destination on a trade.

Ok that's super helpful! Thanks!

Lynx in the finals! I don't usually follow the WNBA, but thanks to this thread and being in Minnesota I will watch the finals. Thanks for all the interesting posts here.

Also, where can I watch the finals online? Thanks.

Online, I’m not sure but here’s the schedule -

Thursday, 10/10 - ESPN at 8 pm
Sunday,10/13 - ABC at 3 pm
Wednesday, 10/16 - ESPN @ 8 pm
Friday, 10/18 - ESPN @ 8 pm
Sunday, 10/20 - ESPN @ 8 pm

All times are eastern time zone and it’s best of 5 so the last 2 are only if necessary.

Also the first 2 games are in NY, then 2 in Minneapolis…if it goes to 5, back in NY.

I think NY wins this in 4. Minnesota doesn't have the size to match up with NY. Jonquel (6'6") and Stewart (6'4") are taller than the Lynx front court. Collier will still play well but it'll be much harder for her to shoot over either of them than it was to shoot over AT. And I don't see Courtney Williams going off on NY's guards. The Lynx are really good though and they can win one game. But this will be a convincing Liberty win.

So dumb that that out of bounds with seconds left isn't an auto review anymore

Tonight’s game may do more from a league promotional standpoint than any other non-Caitlin game to date. This is fantastic! (Except for the officiating)

Brutal loss for NY. You just can’t lose that game at home. And rough night for Stewie. Gonna be interesting to see if they can respond.

That was as gut wrenching a finish as any game I can remember, men or women, college or pro. Felt as dramatic (and improbable) as the final rounds of a fight in a Rocky movie.

That was one of the W's greatest games ever. Especially the comeback. The Liberty had like two points over 8-9 minutes of play late. The Lynx team plays in Reeves's image. Terrific defense. Collier has gone to another level this year.

On a night with two MLB playoff games, the Bruins home opener against the Habs, and an NFL game featuring a Super Bowl team, this was the game I was drawn to and by far the most intense game of the night. Will be interesting to see the ratings.

Insane game. Poor Stewie - missed FT at the end, and then a missed layup at the end of OT. She'll bounce back.

I don't know. Stewart has all of the mental toughness and leadership qualities you would want in a superstar - but this is going to be tough.

I'll be very interested to see Sunday. As good as the Liberty are, they've got a problem with blowing big leads - they did it against Vegas in a game I went to near the end of the regular season; again against the Aces in the last series; and then this one.

She's answered the bell at every level. She's one of the all-time great women's basketball players and is a champion among champions. She was the no doubt alpha player on four UConn title teams, and on two WNBA championship teams. I'm not worried about her. Now whether the Liberty as a team can bounce back, we'll see. That was a crushing loss for them. I noticed that for most of the game, Vandersloot was fine shooting, but when it came to crunch time in the fourth and OT, she played very scared. Not sure why. Jonquel also hit a huge three in OT but missed a number of key shots (some of the relatively easy variety as well) down the stretch. She had a good game overall but needs to come through in those moments.

Collier, by the way, has absolutely reached inner circle elite status. She's incredible.

Here we go…going to be another tough game. Williams has been amazing…the Liberty need to contain her.

Lynx will be all over Stewie and Sabrina…think Jones is going to have to have a big game.

Libs again out with a big lead (18 at one point) and agin letting the Lynx back into it 66–64 Libs with 5 left.

Libs are tight, rushing shots.

Libs pull away down the stretch, a Feibich 3 (otherwise quiet) and several big stops. 80-66 final.

Yea…it seemed closer then the score suggests…

Now the Lynx have home court advantage…should be more exciting games…

Lynx up early in Game 3- but I have a problem- the kits don’t contrast enough- Lynx are in their all black with neon green accents, NY has seafoam and black. Not good.

Just wow, Ionescu with the testicular fortitude gonads to bury take the Dame-range winner there. I was not the biggest fan of her out of college but Sabrina has won me over in the W for sure!

Liberty really stole one from the jaws of defeat there. Massive comeback. Collier looked like she was dialed in the whole game. Just too much star power from Ionescu and Stewie.

Fabulous game…damn!! And Ionescu was slow the first half but wow, did she finish strong! Her 3s…never seen anything like that, particularly in a playoff series!!!!

Collier was also outstanding. Quite the stat for her, more points in a playoff series than previous record holder, Diana Taurasi.

What a series!! If you’re a fan of basketball, this is where it’s at!!

It really has been amazing basketball. Liberty is too strong for the Lynx. Just so many weapons. And I’ve been really impressed with Jones (does anyone else hear John Paul Jones when the announcers say her name). She is a true inside enforcer and has more mobility than I would have expected. Could do with less 3s from her, although she buried a big one last night.

Yes - and I also keep thinking they're saying "Lady Hamilton" for Laney-Hamilton. :D

worst thing you can do in this series is get to a 15 point lead in the second quarter.

I've been the conductor of the Team Jones train all season. She's got the classic big-(wo)man game. Her passing out of the post is on par with the great centers of the men's game.

I agree that I could do with fewer threes but I think that of all centers. I'm on record as saying that I prefer Chamberlain v Russell-type battles, to playing like a team of five Jimmer Fredettes, as is the style now.

This has been real intense wire to wire, but especially this second half.

I kinda love the replay rules where they can award the ball based on an uncalled foul that should've been called.
