Can someone please explain to me all the Dodgers distaste on this board?

if it’s because they spend a lot, sorry, that’s
good for the game and, ya know, the actual talent that makes this game what it is

if it’s because their fans suck, yeah, they don’t have nearly as many die hards as Boston. I can see where that may not help build a kindred spirit but why would it lead to loathing?

curious to read from those who don’t like them.

to me, all the talent makes them likable and interesting and Ohtani is easily the best thing since sliced bread, a true unicorn, and Mookie is an all time favorite. So yeah.

This GIF came out so well, I might as well put it here, too.

It's too bad they couldn't move game 1 up to Wednesday. They'd avoid a Friday night TV slot and pull the end of the series back into October.

They went full throttle and we don’t like that around these parts.

Players getting paid a lot is good. Two teams buying all the players and spending their way into the world series is boring as shit.

It's on MLB to institute a salary cap like the other leagues. (But they probably don't mind)

I didn't use to loathe them. When I first moved to LA I went to Dodgers games all the time and really respected their die hards and the history and heritage of their Mexican American fanbase. A few things have turned me off on them, valid or not:

1) They're 99% Lakers fans (Kobe was always at games, there's a lot of gross Laker crossover, etc), and I never want to see them happy.
2) I am fully and forever bitter about Mookie Betts and that they were the beneficiary of that entire debacle.
3) They have become just a gluttonous dragon swallowing all free agents and spending like a second gen billionaire. It's gross and both of the current teams in the WS do it. Of course I want my team to do this as well, but if I'm not rooting for the Red Sox I prefer underdogs and they are not it. Ohtani + Yamamoto this offseason really, really sealed it.

I will, unfortunately, be rooting for them anyway. At least there are some things to appreciate about the Dodgers and I do have friends that I like that are Dodgers fans. But yeah, this is the only matchup I did not want.

For me (age 59), the 1975 Sox really made me a fan, but 1977 took it to another level, because TV-38 came to my cable system in Connecticut that year, so I was able to watch a ton of games of the Crunch Bunch, a tremendously fun team. I was mad at the Dodgers for losing to the Yankees in the World Series, and somehow even 12-year-old me knew Tommy Lasorda was an a-hole (I couldn't actually say the word at age 12 because my parents might hear. :)) I was mad at them in 1978 for losing to the Yankees again, and even their win in 1981 didn't do much to ease my dislike of them.

Once Lasorda left, I lost my distaste of them. I'm fine rooting for Mookie, Ohtani, Freeman and Roberts.

I think it's an LA thing.

We got no real reason to hate the Dodgers. They have a great tradition, and have battled the MFY on both coasts. Some of our illustrious alumni have worn Dodger Blue, Manny, Nomar, Mookie, Fighting Joe Kelly, Dave Roberts, and Tilt.

They're an easy choice.

Go you fucking trolley Dodgers!

I blame John Henry for that. Somebody was going to get Mookie and it wasn't the acquiring team's fault John Henry has become a cheap fucking bastard after winning 4 titles.

There's no one on the Yankees worth liking. Go Dodgers!

I don’t really get this sentiment. Why?

Everything associated with going to the ballpark is overpriced, at least half the teams are almost never going to be serious players for the top free agents. Third rate players getting $20M does nothing to enhance anyone’s enjoyment of the game. Other than the players.

Do you really think if the players would be paid, let's say, half of what they currently make that prices of tickets and concessions would be lower? No, the only thing that would be different is that the owners would have more money in their pockets.

I've brought this up a few times, but going to do it again. Why the hate on this board for the Dodgers spending money? They're the exact model the Sox want to be. Rays with money. Baseball analytics machine with FA dollars. Friedman and Guggeheim are the model.

I agree, and I love Mookie and Enrique and Ohtani and Freeman. And Will Smith might be the best all around catcher on the planet. And I hope they beat the Yankees so badly that the Yankees just forfeit their 2025 season.

Capitalism is great. The billionaire owners got you blaming the millionaire players for ticket prices. It’s like when people blame fast food workers for wanting minimum wage cuz it makes their cheeseburgers cost 20 extra cents. Labor isn’t the greedy one. You and me are labor.

Here’s the deal:

I do not hate the Dodgers.
I simply do not like them.

I fucking hate the Yankees.

The dodgers are not the Yankees.

Fuck the Yankees.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend (or whatever the expression is).

The dodgers bailed us out by allowing the Red Sox to offload albatross contracts (Beckett, AG, crawford) in 2012 to set the table for the 2013 champs. There is some good there in LA

There are other teams I’d obviously rather see win the World Series than the Dodgers. Having the 2 biggest markets and the east west/coast rivalry angle is probably a good thing for baseball. Big money was spent to buy this World Series regardless of who wins.

Possible silver lining: If in some way this lights a fire under the Red Sox brass to go out and actually spend money on top tier talent maybe it’s not a horrible thing.

Fuck the Yankees.

This is a great matchup. The Heavyweight Title Fight. It’s good for baseball. Most of us here are fans of smaller teams that can’t spend like this, but it’s still fun to see the big boys on the big stage.

Yeah, it sucks that the Yankees might win a title but any baseball fan should want to see Ohtani on the biggest stage possible. And with Judge, Soto, Mookie, Stanton and Freeman, you have a ton of additional talent as well. There’s what, 5-6 MVPs in that group? Hopefully Freeman can play or Kirk Gibson a pinch hit opportunity at some point.

With all this talent, there’s a decent chance we get an iconic moment. Just hope it’s from the Dodgers.

Sure, but this is sports hate and it's not supposed to be rational. That's like saying I can't hate a team for always winning because that's what I want for my time.

Yes I can.

Also, go Dodgers.

I became a Dodgers fan in 1977, when I had to root for them to win Game 5 of the World Series so I could attend game 6.

I wore a Dodgers cap to the toilet. I didn't get much crap, but I was 10 years old. Game and series didn't turn out like I had wished. But it was certainly a memorable game.

I hope this year is different.

I guess go Dodgers. Yeah, I don't like that the players that make stupid amounts all play basically for one of these two teams but I also get that the owners would be pocketing all that money regardless. I don't know if I equate specialized skill labor with "Labor" (like Hollywood actors, superstar musicians... the money continues to flow towards the upper crust while the lower labor continues to lose out and I haven't seen Ohtani or Judge show any solidarity with career AAAA or mL types, or the Nicole Kidmans demand extras be paid better at the ownership expense).
But fuck the Yankees. This sucks and I don't think it's good for baseball fans of teams like Pittsburgh and Cincinnati knowing that their best players are likely to be on one of these two teams) regardless of the system as it currently exists.

Why is there so much questioning about why people would hate the Dodgers? They're Los Angeles. This is Boston, not LA. Fuck all things Los Angeles.

I know I’m not supposed to like the Dodgers, but it’s hard not to root for Mookie and Ohtani.
I also like Freeman and Kiké, and Will Smith might be the best all around catcher in the sport now that JT is starting to fade a bit.

There's a lot to like about this Dodger team, to be honest.

I am going to do what I did for the other series. Have the game on the small screen while watching something else during MFY at bats, glancing to see if they do anything. I don't want the full effect of any MFY success that may occur.

It's not easy rooting for a team that spent over $1,000,000,000 in contracts on just two players this season, and I wouldn't if you weren't playing MFY, but GO DODGERS!

I live in upper Manhattan, in Washington Heights, just a short walk to The Toilet. I'd go to a game with my Red Sox hat on and root for the Dodgers, but for the (gulp) $1,400 per on seatgeek.

I learned in 2000, after about a decade and a half of being a diehard baseball fan, that I'm not actually required to watch the World Series if I'm not going to enjoy it. I'm sure I'll catch a few innings here and there, and I'd probably make a Game #7 a top priority, but I'll take the same approach as then and wait to see if anything happens that might pique my interest.

Yep. This is where I'm at and I don't understand all of the hate watching. When the Sox are in the Series, I don't watch, I'm just happy if they lose.

Difference here is we’re talking about 2 generational talents in Judge/Ohtani squaring off in their first WS. I get not wanting the Yankees to win but no chance in hell I’m missing out on Ohtani, Soto, Judge, Betts in the same WS.

If it were Yankees vs Brewers or something, then I’d get this sentiment more.

No, that's fair. Baseball fans should watch because this will be a spectacle in that sense. East Coast vs West Coast, huge stars on both teams, teams that were vying for the same free agents last year, etc., etc.

I think I'm just surprised that everyone here hates the Dodgers. They have a million former Red Sox players, and ones who were liked! It's not like you are having to root for a suddenly good Carl Crawford or something.

Yeah, I don’t hate the Dodgers. More like annoyance but there is a lot to like about the team they’ve put together/bought. Ditto for Yankees. I love everything about Soto and Judge is a seemingly really good dude.

Only person I really, really cannot stand is Verdugo. Watching him celebrate would probably be the worst part of this for me, if Yankees prevail.

I think MLB would like the situation of having one or wvwn both teams that make the WS be small market teams with more limited budgets.

This would help them sell the game and also help maintain the status quo while the owners line their pockets.

But this is the matchup they really want. The two biggest teams in the two biggest markets (and yet they still are petrified to go against a regular season NFL matchup).
It helps that it''s the top seeds from each league. Also that the top 2 biggest stars from each league are playing each other.

As much as I hate the Yankees (and I hate them with all my heart) this is a compelling matchupo no matter how we slice it.

Go Dodgers (I really do not hate them).

I hate the economics of baseball. I hate that Ohtani and one of Yamamoto, Glasnow, Betts, etc. get paid more than all the A's, Rays, Pirates, Marlins, Orioles, or Guardians combined. As a Sox fan, I feel whiny making this complaint, as our economic advantage is a big part of why we've (recently and historically) had as much success as we've had. But the increasing economic inequality in MLB (and society) is having a marked effect on my interest. It feels like, more so than the other North American pro sports, success for your team in MLB is largely based on how rich your owner is, or whether or not your city is a major market.
