Lots of talk on Twitter of Rays being Yankees’ daddies. I don’t buy this.

Unless they beat Cole. In which case, jon speed has a nice ring to it.

You started this before midnight, I don't even know what that means at this point.

The rules are all different now. It’s like automatic runners on 2nd/7 inning games/3 batter minimums... and, we hope and pray, robo-umps

All kinds of good omens for the pinstripes.

I toyed briefly this AM with grabbing a couple tix to the game and heading in. Going to be a beautiful day today. That really would have put you over the top. Alas, I’m not trying to find a Covid test for my kid this AM, so no dice.

Nobody Cares
I know I could easily google this, but how many people are they letting into the old barn? Are their any mask/capacity restrictions down there?

Edit: Wait, they're in NYC? I assumed Vorpy was a Tampa guy.

20% capacity. Need to show proof of vaccination or proof of a recent negative Covid test—within 72hrs for a PCR, within 6 hours for a rapid antigen. Masks + Distancing.

It’ll probably be Dietrich, I really wish they’d give Gittens a shot.

Whoa. I respect people who recognize that it's time to retire. Good for him.
Athletes get to retire twice. The first one is easy. Bruce is 34. His family can live off his baseball earnings for another decade. But he probably needs to do something with his time.
Retirement is different for non-athletes.

Judge's approach lately has been atrocious.
Judge and Stanton both struck out in the 8th against Castillo. This is a team-wide slump, the worst kind, because everyone is pressing, even DJ. Coaches can preach not pulling off pitches, hit it up the middle, go with the pitch, hitters can look at video of their ABs all night long, but until they relax and quit lunging, they will not hit. Tampa pitchers especially know how to pitch Yankee hitters.

Abysmal. Not a very fun team to watch right now. It'll turn around but they're about as bad as they could be right now and made even more tough to watch because the games are generally pretty close.

Congrats on Jay Bruce and a great career. Sorry to see it end like this. Regrets for him on signing with NY? And yes, it appears that TB is NY's "daddy".

Didn’t watch a pitch of this, roster construction so poor that they couldn’t even give Jay Bruce a goodbye AB.

The close ones hurt the most. They are a better team than this.

I don’t think he has regrets, no one wanted him on a major league deal.

This putrid hitting won’t last forever but as JA says, the roster doesn’t make sense. This team needs a major trade to shake things up. That’s Cashman’s job. Can’t wait to July 31 on this group.

Really good grind it out win against Cole. Back to .500.

Very Rays-ian bullpen usage in bringing in Castillo to face heart of order in 7th-8th. No closers here.

John Sterling and Suzyn Walkman said this when Castillo was warming up. You think like two of the great ones, VORP!

NY’s next opponent (ATL) just hit four homers in the first off Kyle Hendricks.

Acuna came out of game with abdominal injury so that would be very helpful for Yankees staff, if he misses any time.
That is true, but also ATL's 2-8 hitters are 13 for 20 so far tonight, with 5 HRs and 13 RBIs in six innings.

On the other side, NY went 11 for 92 in 3 games this weekend.

I am obviously well aware that baseball doesn't work by the transitive property, but I also know it's hard to win games if your hitting and defense are both horrible.

It just occurred to me that ironically one of the biggest issues with NY's roster construction so far (besides Gleyber and DJ both ideally being 2B and that the DH is a better LF than the LF) is that none of their outfielders are on the IL. Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Frazier, Gardner, if any of those guys is out then Tauchman slides into 5th OF and they could add Dietrich or Wade in addition to someone for Bruce (will be Ford, should be Gittens). But since Cashman refuses to give up his out of options sixth OF, the infield has been one guy short all season so far.

The guys on mlbn said that they thought they'd benefit from playing their better defensive players, "like the Rays." Namely Gardner, Wade, Tauchman. That the difference in offense wasn't great enough to offset the loss in defensive prowess. I have no idea if this is stupid, as I haven't followed the Ys, but it sounds interesting.

I mean, that’s true if their starters aren’t hitting like now, but it’s not the way this team is built.

Here is the print version of this, Sherman neglects to mention that Tauchman has been an automatic out since 2019.
