Has anyone mentioned fuck AppleTV? Because fuck AppleTV, and fuck MLB for screwing over its paying customers.

LOL. I just bumped my thread on the main board. Personally, I love these broadcasts, but I totally get the outrage. I don't have cable or one of the channel streamers, so this is a minimal expense for me.

The broadcast quality is outstanding. The ridiculous giant headphones they make their "sideline reporters" wear is nothing but in-your-face product placement.

I'm in Cleveland for the weekend. Won't make tonight's game but will be there tomorrow. The weather looks....chaotic? Eclectic? Not sure what the word is, but one minute it's sunny and warm, the next minutes the sky is black and there's a cold wind howling. Looks like it starts raining at about game time and not stop until tomorrow afternoon.

Stubborn Alex Cora refuses to mix it up even thought the lineup as constructed has struggled mightily:

Duran LF
Devers DH
Bregman 3B
Story SS
Abreu RF
Campbell 2B
Casas 1B
Rafaela CF
Narvaez C

The AppleTV broadcasts are spectacular, but I still absolutely get the outrage.

I'm here for tonight's game. For the past couple of days the forecast called for rain (70-85%) all afternoon and through the night. This morning things looked MUCH better with no rain in the afternoon with only single digit percent chance through 11PM and higher chance later. Looked like like things might OK for the game, but it's gotten darker recently and now we're looking at an 80% chance of better from 5-11 PM. I've seen no indication of how heavy the rain might be.

is the issue that if you have MLB package you can’t see it without Apple?

Looks like rain until 10 and scattered thunderstorms at first pitch

Hope you bring good luck to the visiting team, @YTF

Yes. I pay big money to see all Red Sox games on MLB.TV. They farmed out some Friday night games to Apple TV. It's a spectacular rip off.
Anyone know how the postponement will affect the Apple broadcast?
You pay $1.08 per game on MLB TV.

Apple TV is like 10 bucks per month and comes with all kinds of other awesome shit. Personally, I don’t understand the outrage.

But to answer your question, tomorrow’s first game will be on Apple TV per the MLB app.

Apple is hoping you sign up and forget about it. (which I did last year) I'll find a workaround for the Apple game this year.
10 bucks a month is not worth the Apple programming I saw last year. I watched "Slow Horses", that was it.
Not worth $120.00 for that show and a couple of Sox games.
MLB tv doesn't discount the Friday night games I miss, non-Sox games included.
They suck. (But I need them)

Game 28: Sox at Guardians (and Celts at Magic)
While it’s raining tonight, we’ll watch the reigning
champions play. We will not start abstaining
from watching baseball, but we are not feigning
our full attention. (At times it’s too draining.)
The optimism we had at Spring Training
has ebbed and flowed and is currently waning.
We love our Red Sox but struggle sustaining
excitement for play that’s not entertaining.
Can someone reach Cora and try explaining
that his baseball brain should do some more braining.
The same old sad tactics he’s tried ingraining
have not worked for years, and he keeps ordaining
the same batting order that’s not obtaining
its best results. Though there are things restraining
some of his options, he still keeps refraining
from shaking things up when the team is straining.
We’re all still Sox fans, and we’re not complaining.
We’re caring, connected, and we’re campaigning
for a change of pace in hopes of regaining
joy and momentum in the games remaining.
Do we see a path out? Yes! (If we’re craning.)

It's their 2021 2nd rounder: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=nikhaz000dou&utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&utm_campaign=2024-11-19_br

My guess is Logan Allen (another lefty) goes Sunday and now the Sox miss Gavin Williams, a meh righty

They know what they're doing, smart team as always
Mix

DONT CHASE

Long known for his feel for spin, Nikhazy features a power mid-80s slider with horizontal and vertical action as his best pitch, though his upper-70s curveball has regressed in pro ball. His fastball has substandard velocity, sitting at 90-93 mph and maxing out at 95, but it plays as an average pitch because he can ride four-seamers at the letters and sink two-seamers at the knees. He's gaining more trust in his tumbling low-80s changeup, an effective chase pitch that he can struggle to land in the zone.

Here's his Fangraphs report as of 4/4/24:

This stuff about him not making progress as a strike thrower seems... not true. He nearly halved his walk rate from 2023 to 2024 and it's down even more in 2025. Not impressive, but maybe viable.

But it's not 120 bucks. Sign up for a free trial and you get the first game free. Cancel after that. Sign up before the next game airs and binge some cool shows for a month. Cancel after that.

Sign up again for the next game and do the same. The Sox games aren't every week. You'll end up paying around 30 bucks total and also watch some other shows everyone else is talking about.

That's what I do. I never keep an AppleTV subscription all year. Plus, they usually offer a promo before the season. As I noted on the Main board, this season they offered 3 months for 9 bucks.

They really do a great job with the broadcast.

Yeah but there are a BUNCH of streaming services all grabbing a piece of everything. Sports, Movies, Docs. etc. In order to get them all it's a lot more than $10 a month. Besides, it's just the idea of having to keep track of all these damn apps and deal with varying amounts of quality not just with the broadcast talent but with the stream quality itself and availability in different areas.

If roster spots were all about who's playing best at the time, Nikhazy would have made Cleveland's rotation out of spring training ahead of Luis Ortiz... or at least been at the front of the pen rather than Joey Cantillo or the recently DFA'd Triston McKenzie. Nikhazy just couldn't overcome being the #9 or #10 starter entering the competition. That said, he's not a high upside guy... he's similar to Cantillo. Nikhazy's best pitch is his slider, while Cantillo is a changeup guy, but they're both lefties who live on breaking stuff rather than velocity. With either one, the concern is that he reverts to old habits when put in a major league rotation and either forgets how or is afraid to put the ball in the strike zone.

Gavin Williams has been erratic but he's definitely not a "meh" pitcher. Matchups aside, Nikhazy will never approach the level of talent Williams has.
