Not to jinx them, but Salem's collective pitching stat line is:

36.0 IP; 29 hits; 5 runs; 4 ERs; 1 HR; 2 HB; 5 BB; 44 Ks; 0.94 WHIP.

Wow.

STORIES

Game Story

After blowing a late lead with untimely wild pitches, the Pawtucket Red Sox gladly benefitted from similar wildness in a 3-2 win in 10 innings Monday night.

Clinging to a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, Pawtucket reliever Rich Hill retired two hitters but then gave up a single and a walk. Brayan Villarreal came on in relief and promptly uncorked a wild pitch, then issued a walk. Then came a second wild pitch, this one sending the runner home from third with the tying run.

In the 10th inning, Justin Henry reached on a one-out walk and then stole second on a strikeout. After an intentional walk, Syracuse pitcher Daniel Stange threw a wild pitch to move the runners into scoring position. With Brandon Snyder at the plate and a light rain falling, Stange threw a second wild pitch and Henry cruised home with the winning run.

Manager Kevin Boles is blessed with a fortunate problem of having three good catchers on his roster. Christian Vazquez caught Monday, his third start in five games, and flashed his powerful throwing arm by tossing out a runner looking to steal second base, and then nabbing a runner lingering too far off first base. Ryan Lavarnway and Dan Butler have both caught one game apiece, as well as seeing time at first base and designated hitter.

“These things will play out,” Boles said. “We’re going to make sure we make sure they get the time behind the plate, and in the bullpen. Lavarnway and Butler will also DH and Lavarnway will play some first base.”
