They're up 12-5 heading to the top of the 7th.

Brian Johnson threw plenty of strikes but left some balls up in the zone according to Evan Lepler's broadcast. He had 7 Ks in his first 9 outs and had only yielded one run through those 3 innings (an RBI single following a lead-off double in the 3rd). But he gave up a pair in the 4th (double-double-single) along with three deep fly ball outs. He was pulled with 2 on (both singles) & 2 out in the 5th, but Kyle Martin couldn't hold the runners as both scored giving Johnson 5 charged ER on 8 H (4 xbh) & 1 BB with 8 Ks over 4.2 IP.

EDIT - Make that 12-8, as Martin gives up 3 ER of his own in the 7th (single-double-single-double).

Sometimes you're the windshield: Allen Webster with 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K in a nice bounce-back outing for the 10-1 PawSox win. Justin Henry & Ryan Lavarnway both go yard.

Sometimes you're the bug: Mike McCarthy gets hammered (4 IP, 7 ER on 11 H) in a 10-1 Portland loss as Trenton racks 17 hits while the Sea Dogs manage just 5 hits & 3 walks. Mario Alcantara (4 IP, 7 R, 5 ER, 3 H, 1 HR, 4 BB) and Myles Smith (3 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 2 HR, 4 B) both suck balls as Greenville's losing 10-1 in the t-9th. The Drive have eked out just 3 hits on the night, all singles.

Yikes. It's now 12-11 Salem after Courtney Hawkins hammered a 3-run HR off Kyle Stroup in the 8th. The Dash are not going to let the record pass quietly.

Great to hear - I've never been to Salem, but I was rooting for them, and I'm sure I'm not alone

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Strong starting pitching from Allen Webster and two productive innings at the plate combined to pave the way for an easy 7-1 win for the Pawtucket Red Sox over Syracuse Tuesday night.

Webster bounced back from a rocky opening night outing by throwing six shutout innings against the Chiefs. Webster allowed only three hits and just one base runner past second base and struck out three in a 83-pitch effort.

The PawSox (4-2) scored three runs in the first inning, thanks in large part to a two-run double by Bryce Brentz. The Sox added three more runs in the fifth inning as Justin Henry and Ryan Lavarnway belted back-to-back home runs. The homers were Pawtucket’s second and third of the young season.
Workman Back

When Brandon Workman emerged from John Farrell’s office late Tuesday night, his right arm still encased in ice, starting pitchers Clay Buchholz and John Lackey were there to shake his hand and wish him well.

When Workman returns to Fenway Park, there’s a good chance he’ll be a starter, too.

Workman is on his way back to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for the return of lefty reliever Craig Breslow. There he’ll be stretched back out as a starter, the role the Red Sox still see as best for him long-term. He made 16 starts in the minor leagues last season and three more in the majors before he made the transition to the bullpen for August, September and the postseason in October.

The 25-year-old righty made three relief appearances for the Red Sox this season, including a strong four-inning stint on Tuesday in which he threw 50 pitches — giving him a head start on getting stretched out. He’ll slot into the PawSox rotation later this week.

“They want me to be stretched out,” he said. “That’s the plan, and that’s what we’re doing.”
SEADGOGS

Game Story

Making his first appearance of the season, the 23-year-old right-hander was tagged for seven runs in the first three innings, including a long home run by Thunder second baseman Rob Refsnyder, in a 10-1 loss at Arm & Hammer Park.

“I didn’t execute very well at all,” McCarthy said. “I left some pitches up in the zone, and they capitalized on it. You tip your cap and say they beat you…that clearly was not an acceptable outing, and it’s something that’ll get turned around next week.”

Played on a brisk night in front of a sparse crowd, the game got away from McCarthy and Portland quickly. After Thunder starter Matt Tracy worked around a leadoff walk to Mookie Betts in the top of the first, Trenton struck in their half of the inning. A leadoff double by Mason Williams and a one-out single by Rob Segedin, which hit McCarthy in the shins and trickled away, set the stage for a four-run first inning.

McCarthy then surrendered a run-scoring single to prized Yankees catching prospect Gary Sanchez and a sacrifice fly to Tyler Austin that scored Segedin to give Trenton a 2-0 advantage. But the big blow came on the second pitch of the at-bat against Refsnyder, who stroked a 1-0 pitch deep to left field to put Portland in a 4-0 hole.
SALEM

Game Story

Whether home or away, the 2014 Salem Red Sox know how to make a good first impression.

The Sox continued their charmed start to the season Tuesday, building a big lead and holding on late to defeat Winston-Salem 12-11 in their home opener in front of 3,513 at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

Matty Johnson and Aneury Tavarez hit their maiden homers of the season to help Salem reach its first 5-0 start in the franchise’s 47-year history. The team had only one other 4-0 start, in 1990.

Dating to last season, the Sox have won 15 consecutive games, including five postseason wins en route to the Carolina League championship.

Tuesday’s victory had many of the elements of Salem’s 10-3 victory at Myrtle Beach in last Thursday’s season opener – including significant help from the opponent. Winston-Salem committed four errors, including a costly two-out miscue by third baseman Nick Basto that led to five unearned runs in the fourth inning.

So far this season, the Sox have been merciless about pouncing on any opportunity. They swept the sloppy Pelicans by a 22-5 aggregate score over four games, took a day off Monday, then unloaded 15 hits on the Dash in a game that took three hours and 25 minutes
DRIVE

Game Story

Charleston centerfielder Brandon Thomas had three hits and four RBIs as the RiverDogs thumped the Greenville Drive 10-1 Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley Park.

Charleston got all the runs it needed in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-run home run by Mike Ford off Greenville starter Mario Alcantara (0-1).

After adding two runs in the fourth, the RiverDogs broke the game wide open with a six-run fifth inning. Thomas highlighted the frame with a grand slam before Michael O’Neill capped the inning with a solo homer.

Tim Roberson drove in the only run of the night for the Drive with a sixth inning sacrifice fly.

Caleb Smith (1-0) got the win for the RiverDogs with five shutout innings and five strikeouts. He allowed one hit and three walks, as Greenville posted only three singles for the game.

Alcantara allowed seven runs, five earned, on three hits in four innings. He walked four and struck out one.
