I assume you mean her photography skills (since she was able to mirror-reverse the image). Because, otherwise, you're sort of proving the point.

FYI, if you have a college student (or college alumni) .edu email address, you can buy a Moto X from Motorola for $339.

Nope, I was referring to her being a gawd-damned Ham Planet ;)

So I'm eligible for an upgrade through for Verizon.  I'm definitely waiting until October or so to get a new phone so I can see what Apple comes out with for the iPhone 6.  I'm thinking about jumping ship after having my S3 get buggy on me time after time.  Is anything coming through the pipeline around the same time that would make me change my mind?

Moto X+1 (and 360 watch) will be out in September.  Not sure it will be a game changer but it should be worth a look.

That's about it Zomp.  All the Hero handsets from the top manufacturers have launched or are right around the corner.

Samsung GS5:  Launched
HTC One M8:  Launched
LG G3:  Launched
Moto X+1:  September Announcement
iPhone 6 4.7" :  September Announcement

The only other devices coming are the Note 4 and possibly a 5.5" variant of the iPhone 6, but I doubt you are looking for something that large.

I just replaced the screen on my phone (LG g2). It's surprisingly easy, no soldering or anything like that. Just a lot of screws, careful prying, and cutting tape to fit. I pulled up a YouTube vid and just followed along. Tedious, but very doable; total cost $70.

Did you need a heat gun? I talked to a friend who replaced the screen on his GS3 and he said he had to use a heat gun.  I will have to do this soon for my wife's Lumia 1020. Hope it's as easy as you say.

My wife and I are ready to ditch Sprint, mostly to save money. I like my S3, which is nearly 2 years old, but my wife's is a lemon - lots of glitchy issues with the camera, and starting to have other problems as well.

Her mom just started up a Mobile Share plan on AT&T, and is offering to add us to the plan and cover a portion of our costs, which would end up cutting our monthly wireless bill in half. The main issue is having to get new phones, at a time when we are a bit cash poor from having just bought a house. I'm cheap, so I would keep my S3 if I could, but that is not an option. What phones are out there these days that are good but not way up in the $600 range?

The LG/Google Nexus 5 is about as good a phone as there is, at $350.  The Moto G is a fine phone at $200.

Looks like Google is letting the supplies of the Nexus 5 run down. The 16G models are all sold out. Perhaps the 6 is on the horizon?

After 5 years or so of BlackBerry, I switched to a Galaxy 5S...I thought I'd miss the keyboard. I don't. This thing is blowing my mind.

All of the sudden I'm getting a message that my gmail login is invalid when I go into my email.  I thought maybe I was hacked or something so I changed my password.  It still doesn't work.  But it works when I open my email in a browser, or if I switch to the gmail app, or if I go into my playstore account, and everything else.  It only won't work on the Android mail app.  What the hell do I do?

I've never liked the gmail app.  I can't put my finger on why.  The latest version of the stock app that's on my M8 seems much better to me.

So just switch to a prepaid plan on Verizon and wanted a cheap phone so I got the Moto G. Anybody have one and if so do you like it? All the reviews are pretty good just wanted to see SOSH thoughts. I figured you can't beat 70 bucks for a smartphone!

My G3 is "out for delivery" .  I will share my thoughts when I have some time with it.

Give the messaging app "Hello" a try.  Clean an simple with tabbed message streams.

I have been using hello.  the biggest frustration to me is that when you share something using the app (instead of starting within the app), you have to scroll your list of "people you text" with no access to just typing from contacts, searching contacts, or entering a new number (for instance, if as right now I want to text a couple of pictures to a contractor).

I just fucking hate when people don't consider use cases that are integral to the mobile experience.  I've sent them a message about it.  It's dumb.  Like really dumb.

Got an LG G3 today (T-Mobile). I think I'm impressed but it's going to take me about nine weeks to figure everything out )I'm coming from an Android Gingerbread phone). One thing that is irksome is that the email app lets you add several different sources but the one for Microsoft is Hotmail and I haven't been able to get my Outlook address added. GMail, no problem, but I don't want to change my business cards (because ( just did).

FYI as of today, if you have a Nexus 5 that you bought in the US from the Play Store directly (not from T-Mobile for instance) and the screen is broken, they will send you a free replacement.

I read this, and then two hours later someone told me hers was broken, so I relayed that info and it does in fact work.

I've got a quick question. We have Verizon, 4 phones on a family plan. Everyone on separate data plans because my oldest is still on unlimited data. He's eligible for an upgrade and is waiting for the next iphone. I'm probably 6 months away from an upgrade using a GN2. The other 2 phones are iphone5's and they are fairly recent upgrades.

My father has a separate account and recently passed away, so when I went to cancel the account the rep said he was eligible for an upgrade and asked if I wanted to use the upgrade on our account, saying it was eligible to be transferred. He did not have a smart phone. The rep was pushing a new device, like an ipad or tablet, however I don't think we want a new device.

Anything I'm missing here? I'm inclined to cut it off and not use the upgrade, unless there is some benefit I'm missing to utilizing his upgrade to our existing phone plan.

Thanks

Don't drop the dumb phone just yet.  Do some digging on this, but at one point you could use a situation such as yours to keep unlimited data.  It's called a buddy upgrade I believe.  Instead of your son using his upgrade to get the iPhone 6 and losing unlimited data, you should upgrade the dumb phone line to the iPhone 6, swap the iPhone 6 to your son's line and then cancel the dumb phone line.  If this still works you'll need to look into how much this will cost you and if that is worth it to you to keep unlimited data.  There's the cost to keep the phone active until the 6 launches, the cost of the data plan you will need to sign up for and then cancel, etc.  I'm not sure of all the details so make sure you do your research including how to not get hit with an ETF for cancelling the dumb phone line.  Good luck.

Verizon closed this loop hole in the last month or so.

Check out Droid-Life, but I believe Verizon has now closed all the upgrade loop holes.

The loophole I used worked just over a month ago.  I ordered an LG G3 from Amazon and activated it with my old sim card from the phone on my unlimited line.  As of today I am still unlimited.

Looks like it was announced that it would be closed about a month ago, and Verizon officially closed it about two weeks ago:

At least for adding data to a dumb phone.

"As was noted in the comments, you still have a couple of options for upgrading and keeping unlimited data. First, you can buy a phone at full retail. Second, you can steal an upgrade from a line that already has a data package. This really only closes the loophole where people were upgrading and then canceling data packages."

My first month on a limited data plan has not been pleasant.  I looked back at two years of data usage and never went above 3.5 GB other than when I came back from a two week trip to Europe and let my phone update about 80 apps over 4G while sitting waiting for luggage.  I went over 6 GB with 4 days left in my cycle.  The biggest culprit seems to be google maps, which I typically use less than 300 MB per month, this month was almost 2 GB.  Some of that is a trip where I used Navigation, but even outside of that week, gmaps has been sucking down about 10 times as much data as normal.  Even still, where is all of this other usage coming from.  Facebook is about double of normal, I guess maybe the bigger screen lets facebook send higher resolution pictures?  I'm not sure how they push content.  The other thing I am wondering is whether the phone is tapping into mobile network even when I am using wireless, because it leaves the mobile data icon active.

I don't think it is that.  I have always used the traffic option on the map which as far as I can tell is live data instead of an overlay to downloaded map.  I have hunted around a bit and found not much.  I am wondering if gmaps on this phone has some stupidly high ping rate for mobile networks to get location information.  For whatever reason you can't set it to just use wifi and GPS for location.  It's either wifi and mobile or GPS only or both.  But I may go to GPS only for a week and see if my usage changes.

As far as facebook goes, do you have videos in your feed on auto play? That can eat up data.

Looks like the new Moto X has been release. They are calling it..... the Moto X!

5.2" screen (up from 4.7")
1080p full HD display (up from 720p)
13mp camera (up from 10mp)
New leather back options
Aluminum band around edge for high end look/feel
Runs (mostly) stock Android 4.4 KitKat

Major features:

  • Moto Voice – Do more than ever with just your voice, without ever touching the phone. Use your voice to interact with some of your favorite apps like Facebook, YouTube, and Whatsapp. Even personalize the experience with your very own customized voice prompt like “You there Moto X?” or “Wake up buddy!”
  • Moto Assist – Life can be hectic, and Moto X can adapt its behavior in certain situations so that you can do more or never be interrupted. It can read aloud new text messages while you’re driving or at home It can also keep quiet during meetings, or turn off all sounds when you go to bed – it even knows to turn everything back on in the morning as you start your day.
  • Moto Display – You don’t have to wake Moto X up to look at the time or sneak a peek at your latest messages. When your display is off, up to three notifications pulse quietly on the screen without interrupting you. If you want to take a peek, simply touch and hold one of the notification icons and more details will appear. Slide left or right to see other messages too – all without ever waking up your screen or unlocking your device.
  • Moto Actions – Go beyond just tapping and swiping your screen. Use simple and reliable gestures to conveniently interact with your Moto X. It knows when your hand is approaching and activates Moto Display. Wave your hand to silence incoming calls or snooze alarms.

It looks like most of this is just bumping up the spec sheet with some tweaks and updates to features carried over from the original MotoX.  It will be interesting to check in on this over the next few weeks for hands-on reviews and camera tests.

The updating of 80 apps at what, 10MB / app covers almost 1 GB right there, right?

For other apps, check the sync settings - I have FB on every-4-hours. And don't let it sync photos (that's a bandwidth killer) and turn off Messenger location services. Having location pining/navigation on a lot will kill some data, but that seems extreme. I haven't checked on what eats data for Maps since it's never affected me, but there's a place under "data usage" on my GS4 where I can disable background data on mobile networks on a per-app basis.

The mobile data icon staying on could be suspicious - this kind of thing varies by device and carrier, though. I'd double check to see if there's a setting somewhere to have mobile data turn off when connected to wifi. If you're doing a lot of MMS, that has to go through mobile data.

I think I'd be all over the Moto X, but there's no SD card. I'd be interesting in seeing what the new Verizon Droid phones look like before *finally* committing. I'm iffy on the S5 and the G3.

For you guys without SD cards, how do you transfer data, etc.? MTP is a royal pain, right?

Mount the phone as a shared drive, copy stuff on and off with your normal tools. The G2 definitely lets you mount it as a wireless drive, no MTP or other horseshit required. I wouldn't buy a phone that didn't allow you to treat it as a regular drive (it's the major reason I ditched the iPhone to begin with).

Airdroid does everything you want it to do without actually connecting it to the computer, right?

I've used Airdroid for transferring pictures and other stuff and it worked fine.

I want to see how the Note Edge works in the real world before buying it, but I like the concept of having a sidebar that I can use to screen calls/emails etc without interrupting whatever I'm doing on the main screen. I'm skeptical of how useful it will be day to day, but I'm intrigued by the curved glass.

Yah. But even if you shut it off it'll sync auto when you turn it on.

Speaking of that I need people to help sync the Pedro Archive. Its like 300GB

Google decided 2 years ago that removable storage media was "a security issue" and the OS has actively removed the ability of any maker to provide this option BY DESIGN. Nothing Android is going to have it going forward. Yeah it shits...

Just found out i'm officially up for a new phone.  I currently have a S3 so any of the new gen phones will be a huge upgrade.  Mainly started looking between the G3 and S5.  I like my S3 but can't stand any of the samsung apps so I end up just removing most of it.  I'm leaning toward the G3 and the only really thing that is holding back is I really like the waterproof features of the S5.  I have young kids so protecting the phone is key when they inevitably get their hands on it so a case is required.  The G3 already seems really wide so adding a case with reasonably protection could make it a behemoth.  Anyone with a G3 have a decent case that keeps the width <= 3in?

Deal breaker. The premium you pay for extra memory is one of my biggest issues with iPhone. If I make a switch one of my requirements will be external memory.

I guess if a 32gb version is still affordable it would still be in consideration.

Check out the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact as well. The Z3 has IP68 certification, but the Compact is, well, more hand-friendly.
