It’s amazing how the Cardinals always have some guy you’ve never heard of coming out of the bullpen throwing over 100. They must have some kind of training program over there.

feel like we've all been somewhat desensitized to high velocity guys, but this is another level

To lose this one both of our best relievers had to have meltdown outings in the same game... going to go with aberration and hopefully not a coming back to Earth moment.

Paxton looked great, but another starter put them in an early hole and couldn’t go more than five innings. The bullpen has been picking up the rotation all season. They had one rough night.

Probably just one of those nights, but I will admit that when I saw Jansen throwing 98, and then Pedro on Jansen's post-400 vid, I thought of Pedro ending up on the DL not long after he vaporized the AL in the ASG.

One of them must have, but I don't remember any of the Sox elite closers since '04 having such a disastrous attempt at a close:
0.0 IP 3H 3R 3ER 1BB 0K 1HR BS L.
Foulke, Paps, Koji, Kimbrel. OK, maybe Kimbrel but probably the offense bailed him out or he had a big enough lead to survive. Hope Jansen is OK.

Kimbrel, 9/28/2016 and 7/152016 let up 4 earned runs without retiring a batter.

Lots of others have done it, but you limited it to elite closers, so that's pretty much it.

How Foulke was a dominant closer for a stretch is oft times still a mystery to me but I loved him in ‘04 maybe as much as Koji in ‘13

Yeah, Foulke's high 80s fastball thrown to almost any hitter always had me holding my breath. Must have had a high spin rate or something.
I doubt he could've been successful in modern MLB with video and data. His fastball only worked because it looked identical to his changeup which was a nasty pitch.
