Because if he comes out to contest, they blow right by him.

The issue is the Boston Celtics are the best team in the NBA that has never figured out, in 6 years or so, how to defend against a screen that puts your least athletic player on the perimeter against faster guards.

We're also the best team in the NBA that hasn't figured out how to hunt mismatches the other way.
