Nobody Cares
If the season ended today, and thank the good lord above that it doesn't, the Boston Red Sox would be in the playoffs. 17-14, having faced one of the toughest schedules in Major League Baseball, is cause for optimism. The team is playing hard, playing well, and is easy to root for. The Sox have been inhospitable hosts to our comrades from the North, and that shall continue with another triumph this evening. Nick Pivetta, often referred to as "Big D!ck Nick" or "Large Phallus Nicholas", is going to lay it on the line for us. Enjoy!

This team has been a joy to watch since Saturday, and now I'm curious how they'll do in the next bit. Pivetta vs Manoah tonight is rough on paper, but they're scrapping right now.

They could actually play into real contention this month - although I expect the Cardinals & Mariners to snap out of it by next homestand in a week, and the Xander reunion road trip is quite a lot of travel (SD, LAA, ARI)

The Cardinals are 10-20, tied with Colorado for the worst record in the NL. You expect them to magically snap out of being a bad team?

I have a probably paranoid reaction to facing a chronically underperforming team - they'll revert to the mean against the REd Sox, every time.

Same the other direction against the 9-0 Rays at the time - and the Red Sox were close in a couple of those games...

This year felt like maybe it was going to be a sludgefart, but it's been fun. Keep being fun.

Game 32
The homestand got off on just the right foot.
With apologies to Gordon Lightfoot,
four Red Sox homeruns, wickedly barreled,
sank the Jays like the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Connor’s caught fire! Dugie’s in a groove!
The dynamic duo combines to prove
the fact that the bemoaned Mookie Betts trade
looks much better now than when it was made.
(In truth, just one piece made us look like clowns,
but every trade has its ups and its Downs.)
As the scrappy Sox continue to fight,
we’ll tune in to see who steps up tonight,
keeping an eye on the Celtics, as well.
Two wins would be heaven. Two losses, hell.

Dang, "barreled" and "Fitzgerald" might be the best rhyme yet, never mind the clever phrasing/wordplay. Thanks again!

Not to put down what a great publication the SOSH game threads are.... but you really need to find another place with more exposure! Do you put your talent to non-Red Sox (or sports in general) topics?

Thanks for the kind words. (Thanks to anyone, honestly, that reads and comments on the poems.)

I teach middle school language arts full time online in Florida. For decades, I have written plays that are performed in high schools and theatres world-wide. (Teaching pays the bills. Playwriting brings in almost nothing.)

I've been in a terrible writing slump since... Covid really ... so these poems are my way of making myself write SOMETHING. If Sports Illustrated wanted a few lines to spice up the next swimsuit issue, I'd be more than happy to contribute, but I am too old and lazy and tired to actively pursue the writing dreams I had in my youth.

That being said, I am very grateful and inspired to have an audience of friends here and will do my best to keep the puns and rhymes coming all season.

That backstory makes your work even more impressive. 162 of these plus another bunch in October would make a great book.

If it's not asking too much, a couple more in early November would be awesome. Think Gatorade and parade. ;)

Old friend Kimbrel just gave up a grand slam to Max Muncy.
Max Muncy is an old friend, too! He ended Game 4 early so that we could get on with winning Game 5!

EDIT: Oh geez, my memory fails me -- it was Game 3 that he ended. Point stands.
