Gabe Speier makes his season debut after TJ surgery last year.  Gabe should be able to give advice to Tanaka on the process.

Apparently, the dude you know who works at the ballpark in Binghamton needs to lay off the weed a bit during the week.

edit: too slow and need to refresh the screen
I only posted because I had a late post in the 7/9 thread and I wanted filler to get this one back to the top. With the Vic question, it was good timing, so I searched twitter so it wouldn't look like I had nothing to add. Sometimes you get lucky.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Pawtucket sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the seventh inning to blow open a close game and propel the PawSox past the Toledo Mud Hens, 11-2, Thursday night at Fifth Third Field in the opener of a four-game series.

After leading the game 2-1 through six innings, the Pawtucket collected six hits and drew three walks in the seventh against three different Toledo pitchers. Corey Brown (two walks) and Mike McCoy (single, two-run double) each reached base twice in the seventh inning.

Pawtucket (50-46) won its fourth consecutive game for just the third time this season. All-Star Anthony Ranaudo (10-4) started and pitched five stressful innings as he became just the second pitcher in the International League to reach double-digit victories. Ranaudo allowed a first-inning run (Tyler Collins RBI double) and a total of six total hits with four strikeouts.

Brown's RBI double in the second against Toledo starter Kyle Lobstein (6-9) tied the score at 1, then Ryan Roberts RBI single in the third put the PawSox in front for the first time. The score remained 2-1 until the seventh inning, when the first six batters reached base for Pawtucket on a leadoff walk to Brown and five consecutive hits.

Jonathan Herrera's RBI single plated Brown to make the score 3-1, then after an Andre Torres single loaded the bases Travis Shaw grounded a two-run single to right. Roberts followed with an RBI double for the fourth run of the rally, and two outs later Brown's bases-loaded walk made the score 7-1. McCoy capped the 42-minute half inning with a two-run double.

Brown finished off the night with a two-run home run (13) in the ninth against position player Danny Worth of Toledo. He drove home four runs while Herrera and Torres each collected three of the PawSox' 16 hits.
SEADOGS

Game Story

The Portland Sea Dogs (59-33) were within one, halfway through, but the Binghamton Mets (55-37) roared back for nine runs over the final three innings and swept away the 'Dogs with the 13-3 victory. The loss marks the fourth in a row for Portland and the first time all season they have had a losing streak of four games or longer.

Luis Diaz made his first start against the Mets, and was greeted by a four-run attack in the second inning. Travis Taijeron and Brandon Nimmo began the rally with a walk and single respectively, before Xorge Carillo doubled to left and plated the pair to make it 2-0.

Diaz continued to struggle in the inning as Rylan Sandoval hit a single to put runners at the corners with one out. The pitcher threw over to first to check on the runner, but threw it away down the right field line, allowing Carillo to score and Sandoval to go to third. Dilson Herrera hit a sacrifice fly to center, Sandoval scored and made it 4-0.

Steven Matz was on the other side of the hill for the B-Mets and the young lefty came out dealing. He threw four perfect frames for Binghamton before Sean Coyle broke up that stretch of 12-in a row with a double to center. Coyle came around to score the 'Dogs' first run on a Keury De La Cruz, which cut the deficit to 4-1.

Matz got out of the fifth without any further damage done, but gave up a pair of runs in the sixth. Heiker Meneses and Peter Hissey reached to begin the inning, and with one out Blake Swihart connected for a double to left that brought home both runners and pulled Portland to within one at 4-3.

That would be as close as the 'Dogs would get it as Binghamton doubled its output with another four runs in the seventh off of Robby Scott. Back-to-back singles began the home half of the seventh and Brian Burgamy loaded the bases on an error by the shortstop Meneses.
SALEM

Game Story

For the second time in the series, Mike Yastrzemski broke a tie game late. The Frederick Keys turned a 3-0 deficit after five into a 5-3 lead after eight and a half, thanks in part to a double by Yaz in the ninth, on the way to a 5-4 victory. It was the third one run decision of the Keys four game series sweep.

Dennis Torres picked up the win in relief, going three innings, surrendering a run on three hits. Nate Reed was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in three innings of his own. Pat Light was outstanding for a third straight start in a no decision for the Sox. Light went six innings, allowing a run on six hits. Dylan Bundy threw three plus frames, allowing three runs on five hits, throwing 73 pitches.

The Sox got on the board first for the first time since July 2nd. Jantzen Witte and Carson Blair walked back to back to lead off the second against Bundy. After back to back strikeouts, Kendrick Perkins launched his first Carolina League hit and RBI, followed by an RBI single by Jordan Weems to give the Sox a 2-0 edge.

Salem added a third run off Bundy in the fourth. Kevin Heller singled, stole second, and scored on a Mario Martinez single to gets the Sox the 3-0 edge.

The Keys began their comeback in the sixth. Michael Burgess led off the frame with a double off Light, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brenden Webb.

Nate Reed came in to relieve Light in the seventh. He allowed a leadoff single to Wynston Sawyer. Following a strikeout, Yastrzemski singled to put two on. With two outs, Trey Mancini knocked in both runs with a single to tie the game.

The game stayed tied at three until the ninth. Jerome Pena laced a one out single, followed by an RBI double by Yastrzemski to give the Keys a 4-3 lead. After a failed squeeze play, Trey Mancini singled in Glynn Davis to give Frederick a needed insurance run.
DRIVE

Game Story

Returning home wasn't the cure for the Greenville Drive's (3-19, 37-54) second-half woes on Thursday night, as the Augusta GreenJackets (11-11, 45-45) ran away with an 8-2 win in front of 6,417 fans at Fluor Field.

The GreenJackets got to Drive starter Teddy Stankiewicz (6-7) for four runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Three consecutive singles began the frame, with the third being an RBI single by Chris Lofton. Two batters later, Ty Ross crushed a three-run homer high off the building in left field to make the score 5-1.

Luis Ysla (6-5) took home the victory for Augusta, working five innings and giving up a pair of runs. Raymundo Montero and Luis Castillo worked a pair of scoreless frames each, with Castillo recording his eighth save.

The Drive took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Carlos Asuaje drove an Ysla offering over the wall in right-center for a solo homer, his 11th of the season.

An error by Stankiewicz allowed Augusta to tie the game in the fourth.

Tzu-Wei Lin delivered a bases-loaded groundout in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 5-2. The score remained there until the ninth, when Eric Sim lined a bases-clearing triple to the left field corner off Sergio Gomez.

Five Augusta hitters collected multi-hit games, with Ross leading the way with two hits and the three-run homer. Zach Kapstein had a pair of hits for Greenville.
SPINNERS

Game Story

Searching for positives, Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino emerged without any setbacks after going 0-for-2 through five innings in rightfield for the Spinners Thursday night. Unfortunately for the Spinners, that was where the positives ended as the Staten Island Yankees scored early and often as they trounced the Lowell, 11-0, at LeLacheur Park.

Staten Island (14-13) ruined the professional debut of Reed Reilly, the Red Sox 7th round selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, when Luis Torrens hit a one-out home run in the first inning to stake the Yankees to a 1-0 lead.

The Yankees would chase Reilly in the second inning before Heri Quevedo escaped the inning with the Spinners in a 3-0 hole.

That would be the only escaping Quevedo would manage on the night, as the right handed was pummeled for five runs in the third and one run in the fourth, with home runs by Renzo Martini and Ty McFarland, to give the Yankees a 9-0 lead. The Yankees would tack on two additional runs in the sixth against Quevedo before Chandler Shepherd and Edwar Garcia pitched the final four innings without allowing any further damage.

Unfortunately for the Spinners, there was no offense to be found. Nick Longhi was the lone offensive bright spot, extending his hitting streak to 12-games with a 2-for-4 night. Jordan Betts had the lone other Spinners hit, on a night when the team struck out 15 times. Victorino was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts before leaving after the fifth inning.
