Has Sean Coyle moved ahead of Garin Cecchini in prospect rankings at this point? I would have to say, yes. I wonder what Cecchini's issue is; something changed dramatically in May, and I am hesitant to just say it is that AAA pitchers all of sudden got a book on him and found a hole. I think either he on his own, or at the behest of the Red Sox, made a change to his approach/swing in search of more power, and it backfired. I remember similar stories with both Eckstein and Pedroia, and then they went back to the way they'd had all their success and been successful again. I'd be interested in seeing a reporter ask that question; the minor league guys following the Red Sox are usually pretty good about that.

I'd say no, but SoxProspects disagree. The thing that I have a hard time with Coyle is that his strikeout rate projects to be so high in MLB that it will be really hard for him to be a good player. He has made strides there this year, but they aren't enough to really make him project as a MLB starter. His other problem is health, but leaving that aside, he has all the non-contact tools you could wish for. The problem is, contact is really important.

Cecchini, on the other hand, does not have Coyle's power, although he might get there. He has much better contact skills and is far superior at drawing a walk. He has struggled this year, and I can certainly understand preferring Coyle, but I'd still take Cecchini over him.

To put it differently, I see Coyle turning into the 2B version of Will Middlebrooks. I think Cecchini still has a chance to be the 3B version of Brett Gardner (without the steals).

Does Cecchini's defense really to project to be GG caliber like Gardner in left? If not, a guy who plays average 3B defense, is not a base stealer and hits like Brett Gardner is not all that enticing.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Pawtucket shortstop Deven Marrero went 4-for-4 with three RBI and after allowing five early runs the pitching staff shutout Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the final seven innings as the PawSox increased their franchise-record winning streak to 11 games with an 8-5 win over the RailRiders Saturday night at PNC Field in the second of a four-game series.

With Syracuse losing against Gwinnett in 10-innings, the PawSox moved within 0.5 games of the North Division-leading Chiefs (61-47). Pawtucket trailed by 8.5 games before the winning streak began. The squad has outscored opponents 71-32 during the 11-game streak and is now 10-0 since the All-Star break.

Will Middlebrooks, playing in the eighth game of his most recent injury rehab stint, played the entire game at third base and went 0-for-5. Middlebrooks, on the Boston DL since May 16th, is now 9-for-33 (.273) with three homers over his last eight games played. Mookie Betts collected a home run and an RBI single for the PawSox.

The two teams combined for ten runs, five for each side, over the first three innings. The pitching staffs then settled down and Pawtucket's three-run sixth inning was the difference in a contest that lasted 3 hours and 51 minutes. Marrero began the rally with a one-out single against reliever Jeremy Bleich (0-4).

Corey Brown then with an RBI triple to left, a ball the just barely landed inside the chalk on the warning track scoring Marrero. Dan Butler drove home Brown with a sacrifice fly, which was followed by Betts' solo homer (3) that chased Bleich from the game and ended the scoring for the night.

PawSox starter Chris Hernandez allowed two runs in the first then three more in the second to put the RailRiders ahead 5-4. Hernandez then tossed scoreless ball in the third and the fourth, while relievers Dalier Hinojosa (two innings), Alex Wilson (two innings) and Tommy Layne (one inning) combined for five frames of scoreless relief.
SEADOGS

Game Story

Despite the Portland Sea Dogs managing only five hits Saturday night in a 5-0 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats before 4,894 at New Britain Stadium, second baseman Sean Coyle disagreed that the offense is struggling.

The Sea Dogs have totaled two runs in the first three games of the series, but Coyle insists the team is hitting in hard luck.

“I feel if you just have your nose in the scorebook you might think that the offense is struggling a little bit, but we’re hitting balls on the nose right at guys,” said Coyle, who had two hits.

“We’re hitting balls to the warning track and having good (at-bats). Sometimes you just hit a bunch of balls right at guys and end up not scoring some runs.”

After needing only Coyle’s sacrifice fly to edge the Rock Cats 1-0 on Friday, Portland was shut down by Tyler Duffey (7-2) and Jim Fuller, who combined on a five-hitter.

Duffey scattered five hits over seven innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.

On Friday, the Sea Dogs overcame their lack of offense, riding a combined one-hitter by Brian Johnson and Noe Ramirez. Johnson struck out a career-high 12 over seven innings.

They weren’t as fortunate Saturday.

The Rock Cats reached Portland starter Wilfredo Boscan (3-5) for six runs and 10 hits over 42/3 innings in a spot start.

If not for Johnson’s gem, the Sea Dogs might have a four-game losing streak, but Manager Billy McMillon echoed Coyle’s remarks.

“We hit a couple hard balls that turned into double plays,” he said. “We’ve put together good at-bats. We just haven’t found holes. We left a lot of runners on base. It’s just kind of one of those ruts we’re in.”

Six of the hits Boscan allowed were doubles, including three straight in the fourth when New Britain scored three runs to open a 4-0 lead.

Aaron Hicks’ second double of the game drove in two runs to give New Britain a 6-0 lead and end Boscan’s night.

“His pitch count was getting up so it was an opportunity to get somebody else in the ballgame,” McMillon said.

The Sea Dogs’ lead was sliced to 31/2 games over Binghamton in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division, but there’s no real concern in the clubhouse. The top two teams make the playoffs, and the Sea Dogs lead third-place New Britain by 14 games.

“We’re not hanging our head about anything,” Coyle said. “We’re just looking to continue what we’re doing and balls will start falling in for us. We’re not going to start changing anything now.”
SALEM

Game Story

Royce Bolinger and Jorge Alfaro both hit homer runs as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Salem Red Sox 4-2 at LewisGale Field Saturday night. Bolinger's two run shot in the fourth gave the Pelicans a 2-1 lead, and Alfaro's solo blast extend the lead to 3-1 in the sixth.

Justin Haley was the tough luck loser for the Sox tonight, allowing just three hits in his five innings of work. Haley retired the first 11 batters he faced. But with two outs in the fourth, Preston Beck doubled, and Bolinger launched a deep home run to left to give the Pelicans a 2-1 lead.

The Sox did hold a 1-0 lead in this game. In the third inning, Birds reliever Cody Buckel walked Matty Johnson, and allowed a hit to Carlos Asuaje. Then Buckel threw wild to first on a pickoff attempt, allowing Johnson to score to give the Sox a 1-0 edge. Salem ended up loading the bases with no outs. But in a crucial turning point in the game, Buckel got Carson Blair to strike out and Reed Gragnani to bounce into a 1-2-3 double play to get out of the third. From their, Buckel would settle in a retire 11 straight Sox to finish his outing. Buckel got the win, lasting four and a third innings. Sam Wolff started for Myrtle Beach, going one and two thirds in a scheduled short outing off his injury.

Corey Littrell entered for the Sox in the sixth, his first appearance out of the bullpen this year. After the lead off home run by Alfaro, Littrell allowed a bunt single to Chris Garia and walked Preston Beck. Bolinger bounced into a double play, scoring Garia to give the Birds a 4-1 edge. Littrell finished with two runs on three hits in four innings, striking out six.
DRIVE

Game Story

Saturday's series opener between the Greenville Drive (9-27, 43-62) and the Hagerstown Suns (23-13, 67-39) featured lots of baserunners on both sides. Despite being outhit 13-9, the Drive were able to take a lead in the middle innings and hold on late for a 6-5 win.

The bottom of the order delivered the big hits for the Drive in the top of the sixth with the score tied at four. Zach Kapstein drew a one-out walk against Andrew Cooper (7-3) and stole second. Hector Lorenzana followed by lining the go-ahead RBI single and taking second on the throw home. Aneudis Peralta then lined an RBI single of his own to make the score 6-4.

Wilmer Difo's RBI groundout in the seventh cut the Drive lead to 6-5, and the Suns made things interesting against Jonathan Aro in the ninth by loading the bases with two outs, but Aro punched out Jimmy Yezzo to end the game, securing his seventh save.

The Suns jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Teddy Stankiewicz after the first two innings. They knocked three consecutive singles leading off the first, with the third of the RBI variety by John Wooten. In the second, the Suns received an RBI single by Rafael Bautista, an RBI groundout by Difo and an RBI double by Wooten.

Stankiewicz settled in from there, keeping the Suns off the board in his final four innings of work to earn his team leading seventh win of the season.

Jake Romanski plated the Drive's first two runs of the game in the third when he smacked a two-run double to right off Hagerstown starter Wirkin Estevez.

In the fourth, Lorenzana's RBI single plated Manuel Margot, who walked, swiped second for his 31st steal of the year, and moved to third on Kapstein's single. Peralta followed with an RBI groundout to knot the game up at four.
SPINNERS

Game Story

After a 27 minute delay to the start of the game, the Lowell Spinners came out swinging, sending 11 batters to the plate as part of an eight run first inning. Bryan Hudson had two hits in the first inning as part of a three-hit game, leading the Spinners to their second straight win over the Hudson Valley Renegades, 9-5, Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park.

Lowell (19-23) poured it on against Hudson Valley's Jose Alonzo in the first inning. Hudson led off the winning with a single and stole second base with one out, advancing to third when Chris Talley's throw went into centerfield. It was work for nothing however, as Sam Travis followed with a towering two-run home run, to put the Spinners up, 2-0. Jordan Betts extended his hitting streak to nine-games with a double and Mike Meyers followed with a single to move Betts into scoring position. After the Spinners plated a pair of additional runs Hudson came through with a bases clearing triple, giving the Spinners an 8-0 lead.

Hudson Valley (29-13) would chip into the lead in the fourth inning. After a single off Heri Quevedo's backside led off the inning, Bralin Jackson's single nearly decapitated the Spinners starter as it made its way up the middle. One batter later Jace Conrad launched a three-run home run on a fastball Quevedo left up in the zone over the new Sal's Pizza sign in right-field, cutting the Spinners' lead to 8-3.

The Renegades inched closer in the sixth inning, chasing Quevedo from the game after a one-out triple by Jackson and Grant Kay walk. Edwar Garcia came out of the bullpen and allowed a 2-run double, escaping a bases loaded jam to hold the lead at 8-5.

The Spinners added an insurance run in the sixth after Dubon led off the inning with a single. A wild pitch moved Dubon to second and a sacrifice bunt advanced him to third before Hudson's second triple of the game brought him in to extend the lead to 9-5.

That is where the score would remain as Oscar Perez and Carlos Pinales combined for three hitless innings of relief to close out the win.

His defense is said to be average at best so yes if he hits like Gardner he is a borderline ML player. He needs to either add pop or maintain the elite OBP he showed in earlier years.

Went to the Spinners game last night, the delay was because the umpires were caught in traffic and were late to the park (due to the Lowell Folk Festival).  Gotta love minor league ball.

Sam Travis' HR was a hard line drive out to left center.  He also reached on an error on a hard ground ball booted by the third baseman.  Jordan Betts followed Travis' HR with a line drive 2B in the gap.  The Renegades starter didn't have a whole lot (obviously) and looked like he was done after that.  Hudson had a big night but one of his triples was because the HV bench coach pulled his outfielders way, way, way in for some reason.  Hudson hit the gap and had an easy stand up triple.  His next AB, the OF returned to a more respectful distance.

Dubon had a decent night too, including a terrific play where he ranged into almost short LF on a ground ball and delivered a leaping strike to first base to record an out.

Nothing to report on the Spinners pitchers.  Not much on the gun and not much in the way of swings and misses.  The one dude on Hudson Valley who shut down the Spinners for 4+ innings was a funky sidearmer from the right side.  Shades of Todd Frohwirth.
