Playoff Watch:

Portland, GCL Sox and DSL Sox have all clinched playoff spots.

Pawtucket has a magic number of 5 for the IL Wild Card. They lead by 2 games over Buffalo and Rochester. They still have an outside shot for the IL North (3 GB of Syracuse).

Salem is 1 GA of Carolina for the CL Southern second half spot. Salem is ahead by virtue of playing 2 fewer games. Salem is scheduled for 8 games in the last 6 days of the season.

Lowell's Tragic Number is 3. They are 3 1/2 GB Brooklyn for the NYPL Wild Card (with Connecticut also ahead of them).

Greenville has been out of playoff contention since July.

I assume Heri Quevedo will get one of the starts. Maybe William Cuevas and a piggyback reliever for the other?

I'm probably among the minority here, but I still like Keith Couch a lot as a potential back-rotation innings eater, even in the AL East.  Since returning from the DL he has a 0.69 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 20/7 K/BB, with his characteristic high groundball rate.  At 24 he's old for AA but I still think there's some upside if he ever gets a shot.

Once again, Ben Cherington is here in Frederick to watch the Salem Sox.

Uhhh... Earth to Heri Quevedo: Allowing 3 ER on 2 H, 2 BB & a WP with 0 K in the bottom of the 1st isn't exactly the way to impress the boss.

Salem gets a run back in the t-3rd on a Carlos Asuaje RBI single to plate Dreily Guerrero.

Leading off and playing CF for Frederick tonight vs Salem is John Ruettiger, nephew of "Rudy". He's a native of Joliet IL but played his college ball at Arizona State, not Notre Dame.

He settled down the rest of the way (4 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K) and Nate Reed pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, but the Sox bats couldn't solve Steven Brault (7 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 6 K).

What had impressed me most was that he'd cut wayyyy down on his gopher balls. After yielding 11 in 129.2 IP last year (plus 9 in 2012 and 11 in 2011), he'd allowed just one HR in 93.2 innings this year...

...Until tonight, anyway. A solo shot by Jake Fox leads off the 2nd, and Logan Moore adds a 2-run blast as part of a 4-run frame for Reading.

LHV plates single runs off Wright in the b-1st & b-2nd, including a solo HR by Tony Gwynn Jr. to lead off the game.

Two more come in on a Maikel Franco double in the b-3rd.

PawSox trail 4-0.

Salem loses game 1, 3-1.

Boxscore

Heri Quevedo went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, 3 walks and a WP; striking out 5. Nate Reed pitched a perfect 6th.

Manuel Margot went 1/1 with a double before being replaced by Kendrick Perkins who went 0/2. Dreily Guerrero, Mario Martinez, Jantzen Witte and Carlos Asuaje each went 1/3; Guerrero with a SB. Matty Johnson went 0/2 with a walk and a SB. Jose Vinicio went 0/2. Jake Romanski and Reed Gragnani each went 0/3.

It appears Margot injured himself on a rundown after his 2nd inning double as he was replaced in the field the very next inning. He is not in the lineup for game 2.

Karsten Whitson just made his first appearance since July 9, turning in a scoreless 4th with a single and 2 Ks.

Spinners up 2-0 on the strength of another solid start by McAvoy (3 IP, 1 H, 3 K).

Portland loaded the bases in the 4th, but Heiker Meneses grounded out to end it. They actually had 4 base runners (3 BB, 1 single) but one was erased on a GIDP.

After a  leadoff single and retiring the next two batters, Ty Buttrey yields 3 in the b-3rd (triple-double-triple). He's got 6 K and no walks, but has allowed 6 hits through the 3 IP. His season ERA for Greenville now sits at 7.28.

The Sea Dogs load the bases again in the b-5th, this time with no outs. Coyle & Welch both Kd, but in between Chester drove in a run on a fielder's choice grounder.

4-1 Reading, heading to the b-6th.

Buttrey gives up 2 more on 3 straight hits to lead off the b-5th (double-double-single), then gets a GIDP and a ground-out to end the inning -- and his night.

5 IP, 5 ER, 9 H, 0 BB, 8 K, 94 pitches, 55 strikes.

Now that is a strange line.  BABIP over .500 sounds quite unlucky.

Kevin McAvoy has now thrown 15 straight scoreless innings, and his season line is down to 2.42 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 19/3 K/BB in 22.1 IP.  Lowell doesn't seem replete with interesting arms this year but McAvoy has caught my eye at least.

the b[e]at on goes for Cecchini.  wouldn't mind seeing him at 3B instead of WMB at least some of the time

with JBJs struggles at Pawtucket can we start assuming something is wrong and discount his MLB performance this year too? Whether its physical or the yips, this dude needs to shut it down and come back in the spring with a fresh mindset.
