Columbus starter Tyler Cloyd threw a no-hitter in his last start. His first pitch tonight is a single by Justin Henry leading off the b-1st.

If Owens' changeup really is that good, and he can keep his velocity closer to 92 than 89, he could look a lot like Cole Hamels, who has a pretty nasty change himself and sits in that 90-93 range.  I'd also say Cliff Lee but asking him to have the kind of command that Lee possesses is not fair to ask of anyone.

It's hard to keep seeing what he's doing in the minors and hearing that he's a 4/5th starter from scouts.
Well, the flip side to that is pointing to a guy like Tommy Milone.  Milone put up some gaudy stats for the Nats coming up but when he reached the majors, his stuff just didn't translate to more than a back-end starter.  The good news is Milone sits more 86-89 and not 89-92.  Just a few MPH difference can differentiate a guy like Milone from Cole Hamels.

Make that 5 of 6 batters Kd, with 22 of 27 pitches for strikes. Wow.

Both his victims went down swinging in the 2nd, sandwiched around a fly to LF.

I'm getting the game on Channel 3 in Worcester. 4 swings and misses on the change up in the 2nd inning. Struck the first batter out swinging on a change up. Got up 1-2 on the second batter. Missed badly with location on the fastball set up outside ended up high and inside but still got the fly out to left field. Third batter two change ups in a row and struck him out with a check swing on a curve ball. Looks really impressive. First time seeing Owens other than the future's game and he looks more dominant than I imagined based on the recent scouting reports projecting him more as a 3/4.

Don't hesitate on the updates.

Got the first batter (lefty) in the third inning on a broken bat ground out on an inside fastball. Struck out the next batter swinging on a nasty curveball in the dirt. Fell behind the next batter 3-0 (all fastballs). Worked his way back to a full count and just missed on an outside changeup. Got the final batter of the inning (lefty) on a strikeout swinging on a fastball (best looking fastball of the night). Curve and change look dominant. The fastball command so far is the only thing missing.

Fourth Inning:
Lindor top prospect for the Indians up now. Change up swing and miss. Fastball looking strike. Missed outside with a curve. Foul of another curve. Hanging curve hit on a line to Bentz in LF. First solidly hit ball all night.

Misses with two straight fasthablls. Another swinging miss on a change up. Fouled off fastball. Missed high with a fastball. Another swinging miss on the change for a strikeout.

Fastball looking. Fouled off fastball. Pop out to the 2nd baseman on a fastball.

Fastball command much better that inning. His changeup is incredible.

Does this ump have a big strike zone?  The other pitcher has thrown 51 strikes and 11 balls.

Cecchini drives in Shaw, Marrero drives in Brentz.

Henry's got a 2-0 lead to work with.

Henry falls behind the first 3 batters in the 5th 1-0, getting the first 2 to fly to left, but he walks Carlos Moncrief.

EDIT - And a first-pitch fly to left ends it. Brentz getting busy out there.

EDIT - FWIW, all 4 batters that inning were hitting RH (2 switch), so I assume Owens was coming across the plate and inside on them and they tried to pull. If so I like that Henry's challenging them instead of only trying to paint the outside. JHU, can you confirm?

Doesn't seem like it, but with the camera position you can't really tell.

Fifth Inning:

Change up misses outside. Fastball misses outside. Outside fastball fouled off. Curve ball (I think) fly out out to Brentz in LF.

Fasatball misses outside. Change up swing and miss. Nasty curve strike looking. Curve fouled off.  Fly ball to LF on an off speed pitch.

Nasty curve that missed low. Fastball misses low and in. Change up swing and miss. Fastball misses low. Fastball misses high.

Fly out LF on an off speed pitch.

Better contact in the fifth, but he's maintaining velocity on FB and separation w/the rest of his pitches.

re: strike zone. It was hard to say early on because he was getting a ton of obvious strikes in checked swings. But he got no help in the fifth.

Singles by Justin Henry & Alex Hassan to lead off the b-5th for the PawSox.

EDIT - Henry scores on a Shaw GIDP. 3-0, PawSox.

Sixth Inning:

Fastball called strike. Fastball at the knees called strike. Nasty curve in the dirt swing and miss. Strike out #9

Curveball that didn't curve to the lefty hits him in the back.

Lindor up again. Fastball strike looking. Fastball ground ball nice play by Marrero to dive and stop the ball. Marrero was shadded towards second for the potential double play and showed great range to even get to the ball. No throw. No chance to get either runner.

Change up misses in the dirt. Change in the dirt swing and miss. Curve ball looking for a strike. Fastball outside ground out to the first baseman, but Owens doesn't cover first so they only get the runner on second.

Swing and miss on a 69 MPH change up (first MPH update given in a while). Fouled off another change up.Fastball misses up and in on purpose. Fouls off the fastball. Big curve ball fouled off. Change up fouled off. Gets him on a flyout to LF on another change up.

Thanks for those detailed updates, JHU. So his first hit was merely an infield grounder? Sweet.

As much as we all wanted to see him just mow everyone down, it's nice to see him get tested from the stretch with runners on and not Buchholz up the joint.

Brentz crushes one to straight away center for a homerun.
If Allen Craig is out for the season I would love for Brentz to get the call sometime before the season ends... He would have been up by now had he not been on the DL for a long period

Agreed. He has looked really solid in all of his at bats and crushed both of his hits.

Owens back out to start the seventh with action behind him in the pen.

Little surprised he's coming out for 7th. Down to 90-91 last inning. Walters stings one up the middle on first pitch.

90 pitches to start the inning. They had bullpen action going so suspect Boles will have a quick hook.

I would think a week or two might be enough before he gets called up

Seventh inning:

Outside fastball lined hard into CF for a single.

Fallball with a lazy fly out to CF.

Curve ball strike looking on the outside corner. Fast ball ground out field choice on a nice play by Cecchini at 3B (was playing off the line and had to dive to get the play)

Fastball fouled off. Missed the next two pitches but they were balls. Swing and miss on the change. 94 MPH fastball that just missed outside. Change up missed low for the walk on the 100th pitch and Owens is being pulled.

I definitely expect a September call-up. I suspect Corey Brown got the call this time because he can play all 3 OF positions well, meaning even if Brentz hadn't just come off a rehab stint I still think they'd have gone with Brown.
