Same thing is happening to me.  I would love some advice.

It's not an error. Firefox has done it intentionally due to massive security flaws in flash. Long story short, there's a gaping, well known hole in flash that is easily exploitable and Adobe hasn't patched it. But if you manually download the new flash, Firefox doesn't block that by default yet.

Flash had unpatched vulnerabilities with exploits publicized.  You should be safe to click/activate Flash on sites that you know/trust.  It's generally a good policy to turn on "click to activate" in any case.
 
Updating your Flash to the new release (today) should clear up the "unsafe" warning.

Same issue with Chrome on Mac.

It's not an "issue". It's just click-to-flash integrated with the browser, coupled with an out-of-date Flash executable that's giving you an extra warning. It lets you bypass it for things that you trust.
