I didn't know that about the Raiders field. Been there for many baseball games and I guess taking an escalator up and then walking down to seats you don't realize it. I would be more afraid of the ghosts of the mad stork Ted Hendricks, Dave Casper, Otis Sistrunk and most of all, Ben Dreith. Brady and company have played in plenty of shitty weather and fields over the years. Keeping an eye on Raiders home games though for field conditions from now on.The field as the OCC is below sea level as well and is relatively shitty, but the only field I have seen Raiders receivers slip on consistently this year is Mexico City. If it rains, the Coliseum turns into a mud bowl. The Raiders played like garbage in the rain at home against the Chiefs this year, so perhaps there is something to it. In a rainy January game the Pats would have to wade through a few inches of water and sewage to get to the field from their locker room, so that might slow them down. Imagine what that would do to Brady's Uggs.
I can smell your fear and desperation.
I still can't believe Brady survived that cheap shot when he got hit in the helmet on that play. Can't believe they didn't call it."Oh noes! Snow!"
Haha, this is a great narrative when it comes to combating the Tuck Rule, but the matter of fact is the refs did not call it the same in 2001. Think the hit to Warner's head on the pick-6.I still can't believe Brady survived that cheap shot when he got hit in the helmet on that play. Can't believe they didn't call it.
What, you think that something illegal happened and they put it on the cover of SI?Haha, this is a great narrative when it comes to combating the Tuck Rule, but the matter of fact is the refs did not call it the same in 2001. Think the hit to Warner's head on the pick-6.
Good catch. It's been too long since watching America's Game or that 3 Games to Glory. Too many hits to the head to keep track of!That photo isn't from the pick-6. Vrabel put the pressure eon and hit Warner in the helmet on Law's INT.
2001 Patriots: 24th ranked defense - 335 yards/game, 6th ranked scoring defense - 17.0 points per gameThat picture caused a jarring flashback to remembering when the Patriots had a good defense It's been a while.
Like "P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney" style flashback.
Wait a minute, doesn't this prove the Pats don't play well in snow, not the Raiders? After all, it was Brady who fumbled the game away."Oh noes! Snow!"
Probably a little of both.2001 Patriots: 24th ranked defense - 335 yards/game, 6th ranked scoring defense - 17.0 points per game
2016 Patriots: 14th ranked defense - 353 yards/game, 3rd ranked scoring defense - 17.9 points per game
Misty water-colored memories or not as bad as we think?

And if I remember correctly, there was either a 3rd down play the possession before this or the Raiders went for it on 4th down and threw a pass that just slipped out of the receivers hands, a pass that, if completed, would have effectively ended the game. edit: maybe it was the 2nd down play before the 3rd down run that was stuffed?Thank you for this. But Richard Seymore and the Pats stopped Zachary Crocket on 3rd &1 because Frank Middleton slipped in the snow and wound up blocking the wrong guy.
I think that the difficulty in just looking at yards allowed and points allowed per game and comparing 2001 to this year is that we know it's lacking in context. On this board I think we all know that, at the very least, we would want an adjustment for offensive environment and for opponents played. I can say right off the bat that scoring league-wide is up over 13% in 2016 compared to 2001, while the Pats are only giving up about 6% more points, which would seem to be in their favor. However, they have also played probably the easiest defensive schedule that I've ever seen this year, and I would think that would more than make up for the difference. I will have to go back and look, but that's why people use things like DVOA when possible these days, not because it is perfect, but because it at least makes those kinds of adjustments.Probably a little of both.
Thanks for posting that. In 01 and early 02 the last 9 games of the year the defense gave up an average of 13.7 PPG (all games less than 17 points many of which were against good teams)- an improvement over the first 11. This year's team just gave up 17 to two putrid teams and 24 and 31 to Seattle and Buffalo. The 2001 team stunned other teams with their ability to stymie the great rams offense.
The jury's still out on this year's team. The D certainly has moments of looking pretty good followed by what feels like several more of me wanting to throw the remote through the window and go fine some puppies to kick.
It doesn't diminish how awesome that season was or what that team accomplished in any way, but they were full luckbox all season. And if I remember correctly, there was either a 3rd down play the possession before this or the Raiders went for it on 4th down and threw a pass that just slipped out of the receivers hands, a pass that, if completed, would have effectively ended the game. edit: maybe it was the 2nd down play before the 3rd down run that was stuffed?
Lost in the tuck rule hoopla is that the Raiders really outplayed the Pats all game. It wasn't dominate, clearly, mostly because the weather was such a factor, but they had many other chances to clinch the victory before the Brady fumble that went awry.
Oh ya, I've never seen anything like it. Patten recovering a fumble while unconscious? Remember the throw against the Falcons that bounced off the receivers helmet straight back to Troy Brown in stride? It doesn't diminish how awesome that season was or what that team accomplished in any way, but they were full luckbox all season.
It's easy to forget, the snow was not a good thing for the Patriots at that point. They were a power running team and the Raiders were the great passing team, and with no ability to get traction in run blocking or pass-rushing, it was a huge advantage for the Raiders' style of play.Lost in the tuck rule hoopla is that the Raiders really outplayed the Pats all game. There might be some truth to this, but Oakland was a power running team, too, with Wheatley, Garner, and Crockett. I believe it was a few weeks before the Pats game, on the last day of the regular season, they rushed for over 300 yards against the Chiefs in the rain (it's possible it was the next year; too much drinking has made my memory somewhat faulty)It's easy to forget, the snow was not a good thing for the Patriots at that point. I'm pretty sure they can clinch a bye next week win a win. Baltimore would have 6 losses, they own the tiebreaker with Pittsburgh and the South leader has 6 losses.Win next week basically clinches a bye
Might need another Pitt loss/tie. There might be some sort of three-way tiebreaker at 11-5 between the Pats, Steelers and AFC West that lands the Pats at # 3.I'm pretty sure they can clinch a bye next week win a win. i think the AFC West will get 3 teams in
1 OAK 13-3 wins out ex for w17
2 NE 13-3 will lose to DEN or mia
3 Pitt 11-5
4 HOU/TENN 9-7
5 KC 11-5
6 DEN 10-6
WEEK 17 might be weird if MIA is 9-6 does ne go all out to keep denver out or do they gamble Den can take out pitt and Oak
J-man - friendly wager on our game in two weeks? If the Broncos win, $100 to a charity of your choice. If we win, you make a statement about Brady's superiority to both Elway and Manning...combined, and how all your playoff wins over us were combinations of flukes and bad officiating.i think the AFC West will get 3 teams in

Brady is better than Elway and 10X than Manning the q is is he better than Montana and to me its even i think if Brady can just get to 41 42 then he is the best period i been doing a lot of thinking on Brady and other then 2002 2008 2009 he has been about 5 plays games from 7 / 8 super bowls and 1 or 2 more SB winsJ-man - friendly wager on our game in two weeks? then u have good news cause if u win out we will beat oakland at home if denver 9-6 or 8-7 because if oakland backs off any we will go after carr then he will be pulledBB doesn't subscribe to that line of thought.
Donated...wanted to make sure they got something cause no way we're losing that game.i will take your bet because http://ucp.org/ could use the money and i like brady ex when he plays aga Den just PM me what forum to make statement in
That's how you take a bet. Nice work, J-man, on stepping up and posting your full thoughts on this.Brady is better than Elway and 10X than Manning the q is is he better than Montana and to me its even i think if Brady can just get to 41 42 then he is the best period i been doing a lot of thinking on Brady and other then 2002 2008 2009 he has been about 5 plays games from 7 / 8 super bowls and 1 or 2 more SB wins
u are partly right about the playoff wins 13 was just home-field had u had gronk maybe u win in 13 15 i cant say because Denver had the 85 bears on def u had 4 shots in the 4th q to win and u did not make it happen
looking back on it losing 43-8 was the best thing that could had happen to Denver cause if we beat Seattle we keep fox go 10-6 and lose 1st round in 14 in 2015 Denver misses the playoffs and so on
I actilly would agree 100% with every word u wrote but i need to see if Denver can win a playoff game with the 32nd ranked off or get to the playoffs in 2016
Denver combined opp record is 35-13 last 4 games and what i saw Sunday in Jacksonville on off was very LA Ram like
the only saving grace is actilly Goddell might be the biggest broncos fan in theplanlet
denver gets away with 2 or 3 DPI a game + without a tick-tack face mask call that led to the only Denver Off TD on Sunday we lose @ Jacksonville
i will take your bet because http://ucp.org/ could use the money and i like brady ex when he plays aga Den just PM me what forum to make statement in
Agreed. For being such a mensch I'll guarantee the hundred and double it if the orange horsies win. That's how you take a bet. Nice work, J-man, on stepping up and posting your full thoughts on this.
Aren't you forgetting the Steelers could win out here? A 3-way tie with NE, KC, and PIT pushes NE down to #3, no?A win and a Miami loss clinched the division and a 1st rd bye.
If Raiders and Pats win out, Raiders get 1 seed based on record vs common opponents.
Deal, though this was more exciting when I thought you said handy.I'll split the first hundy with you.
11-5 probably still works for a bye if Pitt wins out. For the Pats not to get a bye at 11-5 with the Steelers winning out Oakland has to go 1-3 or 0-4 AND KC cant go 3-1 or 4-0 AND Denver cant win out because a 12 win AFC West team leaves the Pats and Steelers in a H-T-H for the 2 seed. Oakland's schedule is tough, but if they go 1-3 then the latter conditions are less likely to hold because they play KC and Denver and KC and Denver play each other. In a three-way tie among NE, PIT and AFC West champ @ 11-5, assuming NE beats BAL and loses to NYJ/BUF/MIA, PIT gets #1 seed (conference record).
NE loses tiebreakers with DEN (H-2-H) and OAK (common games) and gets #3 seed.
Tiebreaker with KC depends on common games. KC currently 2-2 (beat NYJ/DEN, lost to HOU/PIT) with one more game vs. DEN. NE would be 3-2. Next criteria would be strength of victory, which KC would win.
The upshot is that NE will likely need 12 wins for a bye, if either PIT or BAL wins out.
Edit: updated for OAK win.
In addition, New England can clinch a first-round bye in the AFC with the following:Aren't you forgetting the Steelers could win out here? A 3-way tie with NE, KC, and PIT pushes NE down to #3, no?
Look at post #76.
Yeah. That wasn't in your original. In addition, New England can clinch a first-round bye in the AFC with the following:
—A New England win and Miami loss or tie plus a Pittsburgh loss or tie.
