I’m watching at an English pub in Geneva. Empty when I arrived but it’s filled out nicely. Really nice to be in a predominantly African crowd.

it’s been pretty entertaining for a scoreless half. RSA has been the better side so far.

I can't believe Osimhen failed that badly at that header just now. The entire Nigerian team is a lineup of top pros at top clubs, with him leading the list. Roster-wise, this really is a david-vs-goliath matchup. I happen to like Nigeria in general, but there's no doubting that South Africa is the plucky underdog here and it's fun watching them able to get some real chances on the counter here.

Welp. Dream likely dead now. Not seeing how RSA is going to turn this around from here, they're looking like they shot their wad just keeping it level in the first half.

it looked like the ref marked the challenge but let play continue, and then VAR caught up after play stopped with the NGA (non)goal.

That big chance at the end proved to be RSA's one shot to unseat the big boys.

Bit of a shambles of a penalty shootout, though. But glad RSA got this close and made a game of it. If that goal wasn't called back and it was 2-0 with them chasing the game, probably 3-0 by the final whistle, they wouldn't feel half as good about the game.

Sébastien Haller had a nice strike, although he didn't get all of it on his foot, in the 65' to see Côte d'Ivoire through on the other side of the tourney to defeat DR Congo & set up a West African giants showdown for the Finals.

After a goal each from Nigeria & Côte d'Ivoire off headers following corners, Haller strikes again with a lovely flick in 81' to break the deadlock in favour of the Ivorians. CIV hang on in Abidjan, & win the AFCON, giving them their 3rd, joint-4th-most with...Nigeria.

Match was a great one with plenty of testy moments throughout.

What a mad journey! Sack their manager after the group stage, battle back from deficits in the last 2 rounds. I’m not sure how Ivorians survived supporting this team. But I can imagine how they’ll celebrate.

This was also a nice showing by Nigeria after a cycle in the wilderness. They didn’t play the quality of soccer their talent is capable of, but this is a nation that needed results.

Mali had a strong showing. They’re gonna push for the WC.
