While I'm annoyed, good for Hosmer - playing that big of a shift, with Wright as the only one there to cover a bunt, is stupid.

Good piece of hitting there to bring in the 4th run by Infante -- waited for a pitch he could hit.

Also, I still don't like the perpetual ESPN strike zone. It's a little like having subtitles on an English language movie.

So, the Royals did their Championship celebration on OD, great. They're spreading it out over 2 games by giving out rings today? Against the team you beat? Pretty douchey.

Bumgarner just walked in at run in Milwaukee. Then the DP, escapes only giving one run.
One ad after another for the upcoming vote. Yikes, never seen a Trump ad before. Where's the barf emoticon when you need it?

The final season of Turner Field is about to begin.

Do the Braves really need to wear a patch for a field that is in perfectly good working order and has only been around for 20 years?

Brothers and sisters, let us now bow our heads and thank the Red Sox for not giving up our youngsters for Cole Hamels. Edit: After giving up those two homeruns, Hamels went on to pitch well.

Padres probably weren't going to hang with Kershaw and the Dodgers anyway, but this is a complete cluster.

Their new manager pulled in infield in down something like 5-0, and of course a soft liner up the middle brings in more runs, then Kershaw gets a hit, then a ball goes off Kemp's heel and he wildly throws home allowing Kershaw to take 3rd.

11-0 now.

Rather happy the Sox didn't give away anyone for Tyson Ross, after the admittedly SSS of last night's performance. The Sox already have enough starters "proven" capable of absolutely melting down in the sixth inning.

Next we'll see what not-traded-either James Shields can do for the Padres, who look ready to challenge the Phillies for the NL Least title.

They're going to be bad this year.

But the Phillies are going to be epically terrible. Their Pythag last year was 62-100... and they got a combined 7 fWAR from Hamels, Giles, Papelbon, and Revere. They have been replaced by the likes of Andrew Bailey and Peter Bourjos.

I will be surprised if the Phillies win 55 games.

Rays blow a bases loaded DP in the 9th and fall behind.

Edit- whoa, they overturned the call and called the new interference. Rays win.

Rays screwed up a DP ball but Bautista made a move that looked like interference, DP, completely decides the game

We'll take it

There was a lot of talk in the offseason about how the Rays may have sacrificed defense in an attempt to improve the anemic offense. And in the early goings, the defense has been atrocious. If it doesn't sort itself out, there is no way this team can compete.

and his hand grazes Forsythe's foot.
Alternatively "and he grabs Forsythe's foot (who was well clear of the direct path to the base) as he attempts to turn the double play and ends up sliding past the bag."
I guess that didn't fit in the character limit.

Craziness in the 10th in Florida. Tigers load the bases against Ramos with two outs, who walked all three guys. Can't throw strikes, totally on the ropes. Bounces a pitch that gets past the catcher, and all the baserunners start to move, but the ball bounces back quickly. Runner starting from third sees this and heads back, but the catcher realizes that Iglesias, who was on first, slipped trying to turn back and gets caught in no-man's-land, so he throws to first and they get him in a rundown. Inning over.

“@TBTimes_Rays: #BlueJays Gibbons, asked about safety aspect of new slide rule after loss to #Rays, said, ”I guess we’ll come out wearing dresses tomorrow.“”

Insane ending. Hope someone posts video soon -- can't figure that out on mobile.

Was that traditional interference, not even really the new slide rule?
I think so. Everyone is talking about the new rule, but I think this would have been called in previous years too. Easier to see with instant replay is only difference.

Both Gibbons and announcer Gregg Zaun both did not handle this loss with any dignity. First Zaun rolls his eyes at the Posey rule then exclaims he broke his own leg as it was his fault. That's a bit harsh. Then comes the quote that this new rule are making the players sissies. It's hard ball!!!

Can't wait to hear what the Goose will say.

Deliberately grabbing at a guy's leg while he's making a throw is definitely not something you see that often and I think Bautista doesn't have much to complain about.

That said, garden variety runner interference at second base cannot be reviewed under the replay rules. Only violations of the new bona fide slide rule can be reviewed. (Replay rules say only 6.01(j) -- the new rule -- is reviewable but batter or batter runner interference with a double play -- rules 6.01(a)(6) and (a)(7) -- judgment calls are not.). So it must have been determined he "changed his pathway" for the "purpose of initiating contact."

My takeaway from tonight is either: (1) they forgot they cannot review garden variety interference with video or (2) this new rule is going to be interpreted very strictly. If you take the rule literally, there need not even be contact. Just the purpose to initiate contact is enough if you have also changed your pathway. Purpose will usually be tough, but Bautista made it easy. The grab was not part of a natural slide. It was obvious what he was doing. I don't really know what a pathway is, but if they see some lateral movement not part of a natural slide that looks directed toward the fielder I think the offense is at risk on replay.

Edit: MLB Network just mentioned the language in the rule that says you must attempt to stay on the base, which also could be the basis for the call, except the rule talks about staying on base after "completion" of the slide. He looked like he was still in his slide. Anyway, the rule seems to require an ability and attempt to stay on the bag. That's a huge change if that is to be taken literally. Contact isn't even needed. If you come off the bag it looks like it's a double play. You need to treat it like a non-force play slide now.

The Jays and Joey Bats have literally nothing to stand on. He grabbed the SS's leg. That is a total, complete, bush league move. No different than this IMO

Interesting occurrence in Milwaukee today as both the Brewers and Giants started the game with both respective pitchers hitting 8th.

I wonder how many times that's happened? It's got to be very rare.

27 including today. Happened opening day with the same teams which prompted the article.

Kind of strange that it happened 11 times in '08 and then not again until '15.
