Arsenal took down Boreham Wood 0-2 this morning. Ramsey (c), Rosicky, Monreal, and Gibbs featured. The impressive youngsters were Zelalem, Akpom, Bellerin, Toral, and Olsson. Akpom and Bellerin especially impressed me. Next friendly is against NYRB. Should be a fun time.

Ospina looks like he's joining up.

I love this move at this price.  Ospina's height worries me a little bit but he looked quality at the World Cup and should push Woj, which I think he needs.

Now if we can just sign a first team central midfielder.  We've started getting linked To William Carvalho now.  I don't have much of an opinion on him as a player, but I'm skeptical about buying from one of the big Portuguese clubs.  Its feels sort of like trying to make a trade  with that guy in your fantasy league who is known to drive incredibly hard bargains and only make deals that he clearly wins.  Even if you love the player you know that you're probably going to walk away feeling like you might have just gotten robbed.

Khedira is evidently close.

keep in mind this is coming from twitter, but soccer websites are say Balotelli to Arsenal for 15.9 Euro.

150k sounds reasonable for Khedira, anything more and it is an overpay. Screw him, go after Schneiderlin.

Schneiderlin seriously said he'd rather sign for Sp*rs than us

He's dead to me. No ambition.

I really wish you would fake cheer for another team.  Every soccer talk I had this weekend was prefaced with people laughing at me for cheering for the same squad as you.  You are complete embarrassment.

You have no context for any of this and it is painful to watch you try to emulate what you think fandom is.

Seriously why don't you try Real Madrid or Barcelona?  I will buy you the jersey if you went away.

If you knew anything at all, Jon Snow, you would know that Schneiderlin would rather play for his old coach.  Has nothing to do with ambition.

Yeah, I don't think Khedira does anything extraordinary, but for some reason, I've always liked him. His positioning isn't great. He's not a monster tackler. He's just good in the air and sort of drives through the midfield. He'd bring some power and experience that Arsenal have lacked, but I'm not sure he brings the leadership ability, technical skill, or the stardom to warrant the richest contract at the club. Now, I know that the club is going to see wages increase as the commercial deals get better and more stars are brought aboard, but it still doesn't sit right with me. I'd love to have him, but I'm not sure how his wages would affect the dynamic of the team.

This. By all accounts Schneiderlin is still on vacation and hasn't made any statements about anything. Daily Mail article had literally 0 actual quotes.

Meanwhile, in more relevant news:

The teams Arsenal could play in the final qualifying round for the Champions League are the winners of the following ties, with UEFA coefficients in parentheses (higher numbers = stronger opponents):

AEL Limassol (7) or Athletic Bilbao (54)
Dnipro (32) or Copenhagen (45)
Feyenoord (13) or Besiktas (34)
Grasshoppers (9) or Lille (45)
Standard Liege (38) or Panathinakos (30)

Not exactly a murderer's row, there, although I could do without two legs against Athletic Bilbao so early in the season. (Technically, Limassol plays Zenit St. Petersburg in the second qualifying round, but if Zenit wins they will become seeded, and Athletic will take their place among the non-seeded teams.)

I'm going to Copenhagen in a couple of weeks, so I'll probably be checking out the Copenhagen-Dnipro second leg. Might get to see Malmö FF if they make it through tomorrow.

They can't sign Messi, he would kill Sanogo's development. We will only bring in top, top quality. Also, Diaby will be back from injury, he will be Like A New Signing.

David Ospina will be coming, to be officially announced next week. Roychuck Chesney better watch out, Ospina is a good keeper. It's smart to bring in someone good to keep Chesney on his toes.

Nice that Arsenal are finally being linked with a central defender. Nastasic would be a great signing, too bad that it will never happen. They need a central defender, even if Vermalen doesn't go. But I expect he will go, probably on the last day of the window.

Manquillo, the kid we were looking at getting on loan from Atletico, looks to be headed for Liverpool. So maybe Jenkinson stays rather than going out on loan.

Also, Thomas Eisfeld has been sold to Fulham.

And Arsenal have bought a "promising" youth player from Barcelona: a German-based Greek kid who was playing in Spain. He's even younger than Chris Willock, who is even younger than Gedion Zelalem. Who is an Ethiopian-German who plays in England and who might possibly choose to play internationally for the U.S.

Did some googling, but couldn't come up with anything, so I'll ask here:

I've got nothing going on Saturday and I'm thinking of grabbing a ticket to the Arsenal-Red Bulls friendly. Does anybody have a sense of what sort of lineup Arsenal's going to trot out? I don't want to drop $150 on a ticket to watch Arsenal's second team.

Typically, at least some of the first-teamers will get some run, when I saw Man U play the Revs in Foxboro 3 years back, Rooney played the whole first half. The lineup on the field is split 50/50 between first teamers, and reserves. It's better odds than preseason NFL football.

Ramsey, Rosicky, and Gibbs all played against Boreham Wood, and I would imagine they would all play this weekend. Jack got back to training early, but I'm not sure he'll play, though I think he's traveling. Diaby played 45 against BHW too!

EDIT: It'll be really funny if Arsenal ends up with "no ambition" Schneiderlin after all.

Well, he's hoping we don't draw Dnipro

Here's the 20 man traveling roster

Not much star power thanks to the WC.

Midfielders: Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin, Abou Diaby, Mathieu Flamini, Kristoffer Olsson, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky, Jon Toral, Jack Wilshere, Gedion Zelalem
Forward: Chuba Akpom

It takes a month to pull splinters out of asses?

Other than Ozil, who was so prominently involved in World Cup play that they need rest?

Sanchez? Podolski worked very hard to get his hands on the trophy and appear in every pic.

Honestly, the team that traveled is most of the squad...I mean, do people want to watch Giroud play? I don't. A CB? I mean, I'd love to see Kos boss some MLS players, but I'd rather he be rested for the season. Ozil and Sanchez are really the only big guys that would be exciting to see.

Coquelin is still with the team?
He was loaned out to SC Frieburg in Germany last year

He's only 23 so he's got a little bit of time to break through. I mean he's a defensive mid so I think it might be more difficult to evaluate from a fan POV cuz you're not relying on obvious stats.

H/T to Titan's Bastard, who posted this over in the USMNT thread (where the Zelalem comments are already being discussed).

Jeff Bradley of SI.com speaks to Wenger, Gazidis

Gazidis: I never really like the words "big signing." Because for us, the key is finding the pieces Arsene wants. What may be a big signing for us may not seem so to others. I would say disregard everything you read. It's very seldom close to what we're thinking.
Yet it seems people just assume, at Arsenal, we're going to be in the Champions League. They assume we're going to be near the top of the Premier League. There's nothing that really distinguishes us from the other clubs in England, other than this man.

As a non-Arsenal fan, I still think it is ludicrous that a segment of your fan base wants Wenger out. Baffling doesn't quite cover it - more like egregiously stupid.

EDIT: And because Jose smiled, nodded and began plotting when to use it:

SI: Arsenal had a fourth-place finish for the second year in a row, but it's been 10 years since Arsnenal have won an English Premier League title. Can you contend this year?
Wenger: We did last year. We were 128 days on top of the league.

Dan Duquette approves. Oh does he approve.

Loads of rumors about Calum Chambers from Southampton being signed. They are all the typical Arsenal "set to sign" or "closing in on" or "in talks for" headliens still, which means that nothing has happened at all. But the BBC is saying that it's really likely, and the Beeb is pretty reliable.

Chambers is a young right back (19 years old, highly rated on potential) and he's also played defensive mid and center back. Seems like if this happens, then Jenkinson goes on loan if not outright sale. Chambers would be the backup RB, 4th choice center defender (he's inexperienced there and couldn't be third choice yet) and maybe play some midfield this season. With the plan being that by the time he's 21 or 22, he takes over for Debuchy as fulltime RB.

Would be a good but surprising signing if it happens. He would cost a lot more than Wenger likes to spend on any defender, much less a 19-year-old. But he would add real quality depth to a squad that needs it.

With Debuchy there, probably not, but a very high potential guy. He could handle the league games if someone gets hurt, not sure if he's CL quality.

Chambers officially announced today

Figure we loan Jenkinson and maybe Bellerin too

Chambers can back up at CB as well as RB, may even project at CB for the long haul

Opens the door for Verm's exit now, which is a personal bummer but I get it. I'll miss the guy. He's carried himself like a true pro through this.
