Ground Zero
Nelson Cruz is playing his first game at first base tonight, in career game 1,852. That is the 7th most games all time until having played first, trailing the following players: Dick Groat 1,854, Pie Traynor 1,906, Don Kessinger 2,030, Carlos Beltran 2,076, Miguel Tejada 2,122, and Goose Goslin 2,245.

Number listed is career games number in which they played first, not games until.
Cruz hasn’t played the field since the Obama administration and the Rays tossed him a first base mitt before the game and he got the big 2-run go ahead hit in the 8th. Rays win 3-1.

I mean sorta. Both were tie games that they could have lost then or later.

The last three weeks it's been Chapman and occasionally others taking it to the brink of blowing games but never actually blowing them.

I’ll just say it: leaving aside my feelings on the other AL contenders, as a general fan of baseball, I can think of few things more boring than the A’s going to the WC game yet again and, inevitably and predictably, blowing it again.

Good game in San Diego. Snell was pitching a gem but gave up a solo HR to Will Smith in the 8th. Leaves after a career high 122 pitches.
Still somehow 1-1 going to bottom 13, only 8 hits combined. There hasn’t been a game longer than 13 innings yet under this system.

SD made the very bad mistake of double switching the pitcher spot to #5 and running out of position players, so LA has twice now intentionally walked both Machado and Cronenworth with two outs to face Joe Musgrove and Ryan Weathers, both of whom shockingly left the bases loaded. On to 14!!

Two teams a combined 2-31 with RISP, 1-15 and 1-16. The Padres don’t have a hit in the last eight innings.

This game has gone so long that Max Muncy has been the extra innings runner at second twice.

SD on their 9th pitcher and LA on their 8th, we’re going to have Tatis and Bellinger on the mound soon.

Somehow the Dodgers still have a pinch-hitter, old buddy Billy McKinney.

I can't believe the Dodgers still have actual pitchers they haven't used, I know Shane Greene was awful with ATL this year but still.

Gotta love when the baseball night ending and the pre-market opening overlap.

They couldn’t close the roof fast enough at Rogers Centre before the rain hit. Ump had to stop so the grounds crew could work on the mound. It’s finally closed now though.

The Giants and Dodgers are going to be the death of the Padres as well. San Diego had two hits off Scherzer tonight -- now three outs away from getting shutout and falling two games behind the Reds for the final playoff spot. 50% of their remaining games are against those two teams, and as long the Giants & Dodgers are battling for 1st place they have no reason to go any less than full bore.

The A's are in a free fall. Seattle may pass them for third place in the Wild Card by tomorrow night.

IDK what has gotten into Salvador Perez since his elbow injury in 2019, but he is a completely different player. He has hit a HR in 4 straight games. He has 37 HRs for the year when his previous career high was 27. Last year he had 11 in 37 games.

Alas, the Royals have their number this weekend. The opportunity is still there for them, though, they have six games against Oakland and three against Boston.
