The cradle of the game.
Will Myers (SD) called out at home sliding into Sevren (COL). Call eventually overturned because Sevren was blocking the plate. I know this became a rule recently, but can't remember a call being overturned because of it.

deGrom has already thrown a 102mph fastball and 94mph slider so far in his first inning back. Struck out his first two batters, hasn't missed a beat.

Joey Meneses spent 10 seasons in the minors before being called up by the Nats. Hit a homer in just first MLB game today

The Padres' big acquisition of course hits a grand slam in his first at bat. That's right - Brandon Drury makes it 5-0 in San Diego.

Ohtani makes the last out on a popup to SS. There was a runner on 1st. Needed the bases empty. Apparently 8 solo home runs would have been a record, according to Brian Kenny.

The 04 Tigers mentioned in that article hit 6 of their 7 home runs off of Wakefield, yet Wake stayed in their long enough and earned a W out of it (1 of 200 in his career).

You can always take it easy when you're matched up against Zach "Losing Pitcher" Plesac. He now drops to 2-10 on the season.

Verlander decided to just take it easy tonight and only throw six shutout innings with 5 K’s.

15-3. 1.73 ERA.
Thankfully he didn't sign with TOR, would have SUCKED to have him in division, they were the runners-up to going back to HOU. NY tried to go after him, but I think he thrives on beating NY (among other things of course) and would never really have signed here, even with his buddy Cole here already.

The craziest thing to me about Verlander is that he was the more experienced veteran who helped a young Max Scherzer eventually become great in DET. Scherzer did not really become SCHERZER until he won the Cy Young in 2013. Verlander is only two years older but already had 5 top 7 Cy Young seasons by then and a MVP.

Scherzer himself is sporting a 2.13 ERA and WHIP well under 1. Older starters seem to be a much better bet than younger ones in the free agent market. They're willing to accept shorter deals and aren't particularly more likely to be hurt or ineffective.

Mets and Braves play 9 games with each other over the next 15 days* (cheating and including today), and then only 3 more the 2nd to last series of the year. Should be an interesting couple weeks for the NL east

Saw an interesting thread on Reddit today. I don't think there's any doubt that Verlander is a Hall of Famer. What cap does he wear? He's got a lot more time in Detroit obviously, but he's got better numbers and a ring in Houston.

Verlander triggered a player option for next year, which he will most likely decline. He would be the best FA pitcher on the market. Some team's going to give him $80m/2 years IMO.

Moving the Line
This ceremony...

As Vin painted brush strokes of Michelangelo upon the canvas that was baseball's unending story in a fresco, there remains a gray, a void, never to be remade in its likeness. Why it is there shall remain forever more, of course. But in an otherwise work of joy, exuberance, light, and a full spectrum of a rainbow of colors? It is forever entrenched within its work going forward.

But what was once there, as much as memories lasting forever, is much like the paper crumpled. It can no longer return to its original state. We can try. We must. But those wrinkles that tie, of age, in the scraps therein? They too are immortal, as were moments of cheer and so much more. And alas, as painful as it is, on that ream, the next chapter shall be written.

Thank you, Vin.

The Dodgers are up 8-0 on the Padres in the 8th, and the Padres have a position player out there pitching right now. Dave Roberts just pinch hit for Freddie Freeman and sent out... Tyler Anderson, a starting pitcher, to bat for him. Extremely weird move, and playing with fire - last year I distinctly remember Jack Flaherty and Freddy Peralta hurting themselves swinging a bat. And Anderson was taking cuts out there.

Franmil Reyes DFA'd by Cleveland. One ex-Padre hack machine failed (Cordero) maybe the Sox should consider this one. :)

And in the poetic justice category, the Cards, led by Jordan Montgomery, shutout the Yanks 1-0. The MFYs are loaded, but I wonder if giving up Montgomery will come back to haunt them.

Lack of offense with Rizzo/Stanton out is why they lost tonight and why they have lost in the postseason in recent years. If NY loses the division than trading Montgomery will likely be part of the reason, but he was unlikely to even make the postseason roster, depending on injuries of course.

DeGrom has 5 perfect innings on 56 pitches, but I think he is on a pitch count.

Every one of the 16 swings on deGrom's slider so far today has been a whiff. The guy comes back and immediately makes every other stud pitcher this season look like Darwinzon Hernandez in comparison.

There's been a lot of lane slide violation overturns lately at the plate. It cost the Twins a game today.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/34366863/ejected-twins-manager-rocco-baldelli-blasts-overturned-call-loss-jays-one-worst-moments-umpiring-ever-seen

The argument against the overturn is Merrifield had an open lane on the tail side of the plate, but initiated contact.
I believe catchers are allowed to go in to the basepath if the throw is offline. This throw was not offline and Sanchez was in the way of the baserunner.

I saw these two pictures on reddit.
This picture makes it seem like Merrifield could have slid to the outside part of the base, but...

This picture, a split second before the tag, shows Sanchez clearly in the basepath when Merrifield had already started his slide.
