Cafardo: The Red Sox have placed Mike NapoliRusney CastilloJackie Bradley Jr., Brock HoltHanley RamirezCraig Breslow and Justin Masterson on waivers.

We all know the drill. All sorts of players get put on the waiver wire -- those who teams want to move, others just to test the waters for interest -- and it doesn't mean any would get traded, regardless.

This first group of Red Sox going through the process is interesting, though, because it combines big contracts with potential pieces for a contender.

None of the big contracts are likely to be claimed and once cleared they could be moved-- but Holt and Bradley could get nibbles.

No Panda?  Makes no sense.

I wonder if there's a strategy, or at least a perception that it is a strategy, to put a bunch of guys through at once hoping that one or two of the names will catch GM's eyes and other players will slip by due to the distraction.  Obviously, with a 48-hour window, it's not like anyone is only glancing once and moving on, but sometimes it appears that's the expectation.

My assumption is that the Red Sox (and pretty much any team) put guys like Castillo, Bradley, and Holt through not with the intent or expectation that they'll clear and be tradeable now, but with the intent of getting an idea how much interest exists in each player throughout the league for possible deals in the winter or beyond.  If 10 teams put a claim in on Castillo, that could mark him as a possible chip for the future.  Or if one team claims Bradley, maybe Cherington or his staff start taking a closer look at that team's rosters to find a target for a December trade..

As for players missing from the list, I don't think teams can put their entire roster on the waiver wire at once...there are limits to how many can be on the wire at a time.

There's no time limit so they could be waiting for whatever reason.

Holt and JBJ would definitely generate interest. Do teams still sometimes let guys pass through as a courtesy?

That could probably be said of a half dozen players right about now.  And I'd imagine the Sox are justified in every single case.

Not for the August waivers. That's just when teams try to get players like Nava(if he had no options) back to AAA.

I think that's it. The sheer volume of names on these lists could create a crack for someone to fall through ... however improbable it seems.

The other thing I wonder is how much "blocking" there'll be this year. It seems as though there are just 7 NL teams with a realistic chance of the playoffs and 7-8 teams in the AL. Teams might put in claims this year based as much on need as trying to stop Team X from getting Player Y

Another big factor is the lack of a replacement for him. Travis Shaw? The position as a whole around the league is weak which is why the market was so large for Panda last winter and why someone who has shown he isn't a ML player, WMB, got a starting job.

Brock Holt will absolutely get claimed. He is under club control through 2019 and won't have a huge hit in arbitration.

No one will touch Runny Nose Castillo, since he has proven nothing.  Our best hope is that a contender with championship aspirations loses a key offensive piece to injury and, out of desperation, will take on the contract of either Sandoval or Ramirez.  This is unlikely to happen, as it would require a number of developments to occur at roughly the same time.  But stranger things have happened, and if it does happen I would prefer keeping Sandoval, since he can play a position (he has traditionally been solid at 3b).

Seriously? Please don't do this.

It wouldn't surprise me if Breslow or even Masterson were claimed. There is a scrum developing for the second wildcard spot and any arm with MLB experience may be worth a try, as bad as they have been. Breslow is owed about 800K, and Masterson a little over $3M.

Unless some team wants a DH, I can't see Sandoval getting any bites because he's gone all lard gut again and can't move in the field. And, his salary is ridiculous for a DH. Of course, with this line of thinking, the NL is out. Knowing Sandoval's past, he might lose 30 - 40 pounds during the offseason to try to "start over" with Boston. With the length of his contract, he could be up and down in weight for a couple of cycles. Just thanks a lot Ben.

Maybe . . but they were working on something pretty late on 7-31 involving moving one of their bad contracts.  There was some speculation it could have been Pablo.

I'm pretty sure I have a way of knowing what I'm thinking.

Also, of the front office were as down on Panda as this place is, he'd have been shot already.
