PTOs are for 25 days. Does anyone know when the clock starts? Training camps start roughly 22 or 23 days before the start of the season, so if it begins with camp, every PTO extends into the regular season. For the Chcago Blackhawks, who need to put Hossa on LTIR after the season starts in order to eliminate his cap hit, that works out perfectly. Rumors are they will sign Cody Franson to a PTO.

Starting this season, a failed offsides challenge will be a two-minute bench minor.

While that's better than current state, it's still not as good as just abandoning the rule. Hopefully it leads to less fewer challenges this season.

George Parros has been named the new Senior VP of Player Safety, replacing Stephane Quintal.

I agree with Wysh on this one. Shannahan did a better job than Quintal, and I think having a former player (especially one as well-respected and smart as Parros) in the role will help. My only real hope is that there is some consistency put in place for violations.

We had a trade yesterday. Florida sent Jason Demers to Arizona for Jamie McGinn. Arizona is building a nice defense for themselves, if they hit on some of the prospects that are coming up they could surprise this year or at least be good in relatively short order.

There's also some noise being made up in Toronto about their liberal usage of LTIR. The post has been deleted, but Lupul I guess posted a photo on instagram. He then posted a comment saying that he was ready to play, just waiting for a call. A fan pointed out that Lamoriello said Lupul failed his physical and Lupul's response was "Haha failed physical? They cheat, everyone let's them." So we'll see where this goes. Jared Cowan ripped the Leafs for their handling of his similar situation last week. Curious to see if the PA does anything here.

I just saw this on Sportscentre up here. Story from the Toronto Star is here. I'll try to paste the screen cap of the Instagram post, but I'd think something has to be done here.

EDIT: here it is:

Doesn't sound like much will happen with the Lupul situation. I guess he has a few days to decide if he wants to file a grievance and get a 2nd medical opinion. It doesn't sound like he's going to do that since there is minimal upside. If he were to win and get medically cleared, the team would just bury him in the minors.

I would think the league would take some sort of interest in poking around because if Lupul is indeed cleared, then the Leafs are circumventing the cap. Guess the league doesn't want to open that can of worms.

Brian Boyle diagnosed with cancer. Apparently a very treatable form with medication and he plans on not missing time. Twitter tells me the diagnosis is the same as Jason Blake who played 445 games after being diagnosed. All the best to Boyle.

Some fantastic shade from the new kids to Le Glorieux:

For app users:

Vegas Golden Knights: We won our 2nd game last night. For those keeping track, that's more than @Patriots, @dallascowboys or the Washington Pro Football Club

Habs troll: Yeah.... but that's 22 less than the number of Stanley Cups of the Montreal Canadiens !!

VGK: But we've also won two MORE times than @CanadiensMTL have won the Stanley Cup since 1993

Habs official twitter: Good for you! You must be very proud of this incredible preseason accomplishment.

VGK: We're definitely proud! But not as proud as @CanadiensMTL are of how many championships they won when there were only 6 teams in the league

Edit: and after some rando suggested VGK May have been a little too aggressive:
We were just tweeting about football& they attacked us!

Gloves off.
Stick down.
No warning.
They challenged the Knights!

Called us names!

The Golden Knights twitter account is certainly an entertaining follow, that's for sure. They aren't holding back.

Turns out the league is taking an interest in this. They're sending independent doctors to check out Lupul, and also Marian Hossa.

If either player is deemed healthy enough to play, the teams wouldn't be able to put them on LTIR.

Bradley Friesen is a helicopter pilot in Vancouver who has a YouTube channel with videos of a lot of the flights he takes.
Making this relevant - Paul Bissonnette joins him for today's video to rate benches and ledges. But it's worth taking some time when watching through some of the other videos. Some of the scenery is just amazing.

The Devils Split Squad is playing Ottawa tonight. That's not all that noteworthy, except it's the Kraft Hockeyville game. O'Leary, PEI, won the prize last spring, but since the arena's amazingly tiny, the festivities have taken place in O'Leary, while the game itself will be played at Credit Union Place in Summerside. Among the goings on this weekend were a little festival in O'Leary, which included a skills competition for the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL, an AUS women's hockey game between UPEI and St. Thomas, and a Taste of the Town sampling of local restaurants, and today, the Sens and Devils practiced in Summerside, while Ron MacLean and Don Cherry held a Q&A. The game will be on at 6 ET on NHL Network in the US, and Sportsnet One in Canada. Once I can post them online, I'll get my snapshots from O'Leary yesterday on here.
