Hope this ends up coming together, for everyone's sake

I think it might be really good for Bill to get back into coaching, but not in the NFL. Same things he loves about coaching but fresh scene, fresh rivalries, etc.

Better for the Pats and Pats fans, too, for the media and everyone to turn the page from 'What is Belichick saying this week and what might be the subtext about New England?'

If we were to look back at the history of the head coach in waiting title, more often than not it never comes to fruition (e.g. Muschamp at Texas, Franklin at Maryland, or Bill himself in New York). It amounts to nothing more than a vanity title for Steve and maybe a slightly higher buyout if Bill retires and they choose to go in a different direction.

This. To keep flexibility UNC can offer BB that they'll either hire Steve after he leaves OR pay an exorbitant buy-out to him equivalent to one or two years of head coaching work. (Not sure if dad negotiating that contract means Steve forfeits some of his inheritance to the other siblings as a swap.)
