I will admit I would be a proponent of a quicker whistle. I am not a fan of the scrum plays where you have O-Lineman coming in from 10 yards away to slam in and try to move the pile forward. BC 64 hit the cscrum trying to move the pile forward right at basically the same time the fumble occurs, has instead that pushed the balance and pile forward, BC happily would have taken the extra yard.

NC St finally punts, and BC blocks it for the score.

Doren has coached the 4th quarter as badly as Daz coached the first 3, maybe worse. NC St inexplicable stopped playing out there

Refs stole this fucking game. Unreal.
Maybe if BC had actually competed in the first 3 quarters I could get upset about some officiating.

ANd yeah the fumble play changes this, but if BC scores there, one would think Doren stops turtling and goes back to actually trying to move the ball against the BC defense, and i still don't think BC has defended a receiver more than 10 yards downfield yet today

They were in the game at the very end without Dillon. The fumble call and spot were absolutely criminal.

the fumble was a bad call in my book as well

The spot was bad, but so what. If they place it 1 yard short which is where it should have been, but it was a 2nd down play.. Did BC do anything all day to convince you that BC could stop 2 attempts from NC St with 1 yard needed for first

I would have liked to find out what would have happened had the refs not been grossly incompetent. BC didn’t play well. Nobody disputes that. But they made a very good comeback that was absolutely impacted by the refs.

End of the day, I knew they’d lose today because Daz teams never surprise you with unexpected wins.

Daz has never been a defensive whiz. He was an O line coach and moved up the coaching ranks on the O side of the ball.

That said, I didn’t see the game yesterday but did listen to it on my iPhone as I had a bunch of things to do. Looks Ike the refs didn’t help at all but I look at the fact that they had 4 turnovers in their favor, that should have resulted in points (I guess there was a blocked punt that was returned but that didn’t turn up in turnover stat) and did not capitalize on the turnovers . They had only 1 3rd down conversion? That’s real bad. Those stats tell me the obvious, the offense was a non factor for most of the game. Time of possession was in favor of NC State (41:30 -18:30). Hard to win when your O is on the bench for 2/3 of the game.

With Dillon out, the pressure was on Brown. Looks like he had a pretty bad first half and an ok second but it was too little too late.

They have good athletes. Kudos for fighting back and winning the second half. But they are now 1-2 against P5 competition and their victory against Wake (3-3 now) is looking more meh with each passing week. (Clemson put 63 on the Deacons yesterday). Their other wins are against 1-5 Holy Cross, a 2-5 UMass, and 3-3 Temple. Bottom line they have not beaten anybody of substance. Combined victorious opponent’s record is 9-16. They are Too inconsistent with a coach who continues to lose his mind on the sidelines.

I see at best a 7-5 record and in my mind that is not enough to extend him. I think we have gotten all we are gonna get out of Daz as a head coach. He upgraded the talent, the facilities are vastly improved but the program is mired in mediocrity as a whole. Better than Spaz but that is a pretty low bar. They are starting a $150M capital campaign. I can’t see Daz as the guy you want out there leading the major revenue sport over the next 5 years posting 7-5/6-6 records and expecting to reach your campaign goals. We’ll see what next weekend brings.

Brown also missed a wide open Jeff Smith in the end zone on the opening drive. Scoring 7 on that drive would’ve changed the trajectory of the game.

Brown's regression the past couple of weeks has been very disappointing to watch. He's never been an accurate QB but he was terrible against Purdue and bad most of the NC State game. The guy has a good arm but he's like a reliever with a good fastball who has no idea where it's going.

As for Daz, I've been railing on him for years. He just flat out sucks. 7 wins seems like his ceiling. Maybe 8 if things break right. I'll give him credit for getting better talent in here (relative to Spaz) but he could have a bunch of 5 star guys all over the place and it wouldn't matter. He'll always just go with what he's comfortable with and will never adjust his gameplan to match his roster's strengths. There's zero creativity on offense. Defense has a couple nice players but is basically vanilla and terrible.

Jarmond needs to shake things up after this year. Give Dillon a real chance to win next year.

7-5 could do Daz in this year with the schedule being so weak. I think for sure they thought they would have 0 or 1 loss at this point; and Louisville looks like the only slam dunk left to play.

Going to be interesting to see how Jarmond handles this. A 7 win season with no real wins in a down ACC year is another data point against Daz. If I were AD, I would make 8 wins an absolute minimum and then look at bowl performance.

Yeah, Daz's true calling is as an "assistant head coach" type with primary responsibility for recruiting. He's just not a good X's-and-O's guy and never has been, and he lacks in-game awareness. He bought himself an extra year last year with the team's strong second-half performance after everyone was anticipating a 5 or 6 win season. This year is kind of the reverse - as BSF says I think 8 wins (not including bowl) has to be the minimum to keep him around given their ridiculously easy first-half schedule. Because if he can't get 8 wins this season, then what evidence is there that he ever could any other year?

Aside from the Jags situation, has BC ever fired a coach after a better than .500 season? This 8 or 9 win standard you guys are setting doesn’t really seem in line with historical precedent.

If I had to handicap, I don't think he would get fired if he turns in another 7-6 season. Daz has been remarkably consistent during his 6 years here. We pretty much know what he's going to deliver, which is 7 wins. I know Leahy doesn't like to rock the boat but he will do so from time to time. Al Skinner was canned after a long and successful run. His last season, he was 15-16. The year before that, he was 22-12.

If I had to guess, Daz makes it another year and then gets canned after the 2019 season if he submits another similar year. By Year 6, Tom O'Brien had his first 9 win season and he had 2 8 win seasons before that. Daz is still stuck on 7 and is unlikely to exceed that this year based on what I see.

Jarmond basically gets one crack at the apple. Hard to tell what his current thoughts are but if he ever wants to upgrade his job, he needs football success at BC. And Daz is not exactly the guy I'd want to tie my own career prospects to. Because of this, I think Jarmond pulls the trigger at some point in the next 14 months (assuming no miracles from Daz).

It's probably not. More what I would do than what I would expect BC to actually do. Then again we have a new AD so he may have different thoughts about the topic than the GDF administration or prior.

Though not "technically" fired Tom O'Brine was encouraged to look for a new job by GDF over the last 2 or so years of his reign IIRC, he interviewed for the Washington job in 2005/6 and obviously got the NC State job in 2006. When he got the job, GDF told him to pack up and git. Spaz coached the team in the bowl game against Navy. Soooo, that's about as close as it got to a coach getting canned after a winning season. It would be great if they broke with precedent.

Nobody watching the Louisville game today? Started really well, with BC jumping out to a 14-0 lead, but Louisville put up 20 straight unanswered in about 12 minutes. Nice stand by BC here with 4 minutes left in the 2nd though, and they should get the ball back with pretty good field position to maybe score before the half.

And BC blocks the punt, and they score a TD for the second week in a row. That was huge. Could have had 3 different guys block it. Maybe I should keep posting in this thread.

Anyone have an update on Dillon? I thought his ankle wasn't that serious, but he's been out what, 3 weeks now?

A guy named Fitzpatrick would be a good fit at Chestnut Hill. Especially with skills like that. Guessing he didn't have the academics to ever be on the radar.

Made the catch on his head that got them 3 points, and then drops the pass on his hip that would have given them a first down inside the redzone, maybe deep as he was wide open on the slant. Game changer as they were driving towards a go ahead score there.

Thankfully the hockey game has started so I can stop watching this game. Just another game featuring a terrible opponent who BC couldn't pull away from.. Bad team like this (much like Temple), you can't let the opponent stay in touch into the 4th quarter if you have as deep and experienced a roster as BC has

Up by 2 scores in the middle of the 4th quarter and daz is still having them go hurry up and snapping with 20 seconds on the playclock

Two weeks for Dillon to heal for Miami. Basically have to win if this team wants to entertain the possibility of an 8 win season.

This is the game that will determine the season. If they win that, they are 6-2 and have a shot for an 8 win season. Certain blogs have them playing Stanford in the Sun Bowl if they get to 8 wins. They need a marquee win tho to make a Tier I bowl IMHO. Right now they don't have one. In fact they have yet to beat a team with a winning record this year. They lose this and they are looking at 7-5 and maybe 6-6 and a date with Cincinnati or Tulane or someone of that ilk in the Military Bowl....that would be a major letdown.

Agreed. Beat Miami and an 8-4 season is a real possibility. Lose and even getting to 7 wins will be a struggle, which would be unacceptable given the schedule and the current state of the ACC.

hey boys, just a couple of quick things about the past two games
1) NCSU- that game was lost in the first half on first down on BOTH sides of the ball, State had 2nd and 4 or less about every time while we, after the first series, had 2nd and +7 about every series. Great job of the kids to stay in the game and make it close

2) Louisville- that was a painful exhibition of football, being up by 14 5 min in and letting them come back to make it a game. and if anyone was in earshot (plenty of good seats available) you can guess who was the leather lung up in QQ yelling for Petrino to get back on his motorcycle

Yeah. Fluke wins happen all the time in college football. BC was not even competitive against a team that lost its first 3 games of the season. Big game against Miami coming up. It's a must-win for Daz.

Friday's attendance/crowd involvement, which is a worry with BC under the best of circumstances, will likely be impacted by going head-to-head against Game 3 of the World Series. If I already had tickets I wouldn't bother going, I know that.

Crazy start to the game. First BC possession results in a touchdown, after a big trick play with a pass back to Brown got them down into the red zone.

Then Miami comes down and scores.

Then another trick play on an end around to Smith, who turned and threw it back to a streaking receiver on the other sideline, got them into the red zone again, and Brown just ran it in.

BC's offense looks like they can do just about anything they want to tonight during the "red bandanna" game. Miami's drive required a lot of work, and multiple third down conversions, including the touchdown which was a third an 7 or 8 and a pass that was called incomplete on the field, but overturned. Going to be interesting to see if this remains a shootout or if the defenses come to life.

The type of things you'd expect a program like Miami to be able to do against BC's defense they could not do at all. Good thing because after the first couple of possessions BC couldn't translate very much into actual points on the scoreboard.

Didn’t see a snap. Was traveling and heard the game in and out on the iPhone. They are 6-2 and bowl eligible. Now they are playing to climb up the bowl ladder. Blogs have them going to El Paso v Stanford, USC if they end up 8-4, Washington State or Arizona State if they can turn things around a bit. All this if BC wins 8 games. That means they need 2 against Va Tech, FSU, Syracuse and Clemson. It starts next week.

Good game and they now have their “marquee win” for the season. But why do I still have this feeling it will all come down to Syracuse on Thanksgiving weekend for a trip to a Tier 1 bowl. We haven’t seen that scenario before have we? #diamondferri

Just watched the game since it got bumped to DVR due to the Sox. Really solid win. Play calling was very creative in the first half. Nowhere near as predictable as we saw earlier in the season before Dillon got hurt. They even threw a screen to Dillon, which I've been screaming for. Fun half to watch! Then the defense stepped up in the second half and the offense went really conservative as they went into their version of killing the clock. As the play by play guy pointed out, that results in sort of an awkward hybrid of "uptempo working the clock" that isnt particularly effective. Didn't matter in this case though, as Miami didn't give the defense much to worry about.

So Clemson looks like a L, FSU looks like a W, 2 others are toss-ups. I see a L @ Va Tech and a W v. Syracuse with a healthy Dillon in the cold.

If they somehow manage to go 9-3, and beat either Va Tech or Clemson, I think Daz stays. Not sure we want that.

BC is already back in the top 25 in both polls. 24 in AP and 25 in the coaches. I know it would mean Daz stays which is eh, but i really hope they go 9-3 this year. They already have a nice class coming in next year, and a 9 win year will only help out recruiting.
