Really tough choice among the Red Sox PBP guys. They almost cancel each other out. I went with Coleman in the end. Tremendous voice, great stories, fantastic calls, vivid descriptions, etc.

I voted Gorman, but I'd love for Grande to take his spot, when Gorman calls it a career. Grande's just great on the radio for the Celtics.

Joe and Trup and Nomar made me fall in love with the Sox, though.

Coleman and Castiglione for me. I went Castiglione.
As a sports town, I think we've had a fair share of really good to almost great play-by-play announcers.

I guess I’m the minority that really likes Dave O’Brien.
He's fucking terrible. He's not offensive or a chronic whiner like Kay or Hawk but he sucks.

Unkess there was someone better before my time the answer is clearly Sean.

Gil Santos' voice is basically perfect for radio. Right cadence, great grasp of the game and painted a wonderful picture of the action. Knew when to let Gino do his thing. He's the best, IMO.

McDonough is a real pro and is a good second place finisher.

After that, I don't care. I've already voiced my opinion on Most - who I only got to hear towards the end of his career when he wasn't good anymore, so I can't really say much about his earlier work. Castiglione is a legend but in all honesty, his voice isn't great. I just like him because. I love his calls when the Sox have a rally going and need a hit and then he says, with the Fenway crowd at full throat (and you can all picture this in his voice, sounding like his dog just died): "Swing and a popup..." Classic.

Completely agree, although it looks like I'm the only one based on the results so far.

I will admit I base a lot of my McDonough criticism on his MNF work, which was boring and unspectacular. Perhaps I'm too harsh on his baseball PBP.

Did you watch the MNF highlights I posted? That didn't seem boring to me. Maybe it's because MNF has sucked for several years (quality of matchups).

You should also go out and watch some of his non-Red Sox work too. Lots of great moments to choose from:

On top of all of that for me is that I will always remember McDonough as the "voice of my childhood" and the introductory voice to my favorite sports opening theme of all time. "TV 38 sports presents Boston Red Sox baseball!!" That theme still gives me chills to this day.

Awesome video at the bottom. Though I still prefer “the heat is on”

Was Baybank called BayBanks previously or was that an error?

And remember when Busch was “smooth?”
Lol

Microbreweries have really improved the baseball and life experience. (And SAM begat all that)

Cusick isn't getting enough love here. He's easily my favorite announcer of all time. I put Santos higher because I think football is harder with so much dead air time that it's easier to suck and harder to stand out, but hockey is such a fast sport and Cusick never had a bad day.

Santos had alot of bad days in his last few seasons, as did Gino. I overrated those tough years in my own ranking

Haha. The 80's ads make that all the more nostalgic. I think there was a temporary "Baybanks" branding when they bought out/merged with a number of other banks.

I voted for Martin but I would call it a tie with McDonough. He was and is really good.
