That content still has a lot of long term SEO value.  No way they pull that down or just give it back to Bill to go start his own site. Bill loves referencing/linking back to old columns too (if you remember from my Playoff Gambling Manifesto in 2011, rule 5, etc.). Could even be a point of leverage in the negotiations.
How so? I mean ESPN isn't going to get rid of it, and they can't stop him from linking to it. I'm not sure what there is to negotiate in regards to his old stuff.

Yeah, that JVG podcast was tough listening for a guy who is usually pretty good. Basically waved away improvements from teams like the Warriors and Hawks under "well, maybe they would have improved anyway" bizarro logic. Anytime you resort to "these guys have families!" as a reason they shouldn't be fired, just...woof.

FWIW, I'm glad it wasn't only me who thought this - JVG's logic was so infuriating that I actually had to stop listening to that podcast halfway through. Lowe is a great NBA thinker, but he's not a tough-as-nails interviewer capable of calling someone like Van Gundy out for some of the comments he was making.

I think it's a question of whether BS wants to link back to ESPN in the future...links from his new site back to ESPN just helps the Mothership even more

ESPN has approximately all of the SEO juice, ever. It's not like backlinks into Simmons's own archive are of material value to them. Were I in his shoes I'd just link to it like I'd link to anything else on the internet. (Plenty of writers do exactly that when they move to new outlets.)

ESPN may not care about the SEO, but if Simmons starts his own platform, he'll certainly care about the links and the SEO benefit. At least to start.

Considering his strength is the NBA which neither network/company has any chance of airing anytime soon, I can see why they aren't falling over themselves to bid for him.  But then again, what else are they supposed to say?  That they're desperate to bring him in and can't wait until September to start negotiating?  Wouldn't that only serve to drive his price up?

Bill gets more clicks on the internet than just about any other current media personalty, so any media entity should in theory be interested. But you're right, they'd be wise to hold their cards close since he's not on the market yet. Also, any NFL rights holder may not want the headaches.

Right, "right now"' he is under contract.

from the article:

“I’ve never met the man. We don’t have a reason to do business right now,” NBC Sports Group Chair Mark Lazarus reportedly said.

“I would agree with Mark,” CBS Sports Chair Sean McManus added.

where the darn libs live
It seems pretty fucking odd to me that they would promote anything Simmons in any way on social media considering you have most of the GL staff changing their avatars to Simmons or Grantland related images.

think John Skipper or the Mothership's management is tracking every movement of Grantland Twitter? doubt the marketing ppl behind Grantland are giving too much thought into it

Seems no one who worked for him bad mouthed him. Seems everyone in Bristol hated him. Ted Wells would say it's likely based on jealousy

I've just started listening to the May 21 Grantland NFL Podcast, and Robert Mays started the episode with a story of the support Simmons showed to him after an incident when most of Mays' clothing was stolen from the laundry in the basement of his apartment - he seemed really emotional talking about Simmons' departure and how much Simmons means to him. It's worth seeking out if only for that story, although you might also enjoy the hilariously cringe-worthy SeatGeek advert at the start of the pod (in which Bill Barnwell stiltedly suggests you should want to buy tickets to see the start of the Jimmy Garoppolo era in Foxborough).

ESPN has always been selective and shitty about this. One of TrueHoop's best writers was banned from guest appearances on CBS podcasts, for example.
When Stu Scott passed away they had no problem with the ESPN crew going on the DP show.

I know this isn't an original thought, but it's still amazing to me that the Skipper-Simmons relationship had been so poisoned that Skipper would voluntarily choose to just stone-cold drop Simmons from producing any content whatsoever during the one time of the year when the NBA is front and center in the sports world.

The mothership has allowed its employees to go on the DP show for a while now. I can't remember when it started, but I think it's been a few years.

Going on DP's show with permission to praise Stuart Scott is not the same as going without permission and bashing an ESPN partner.

There is no reason to believe Simmons didn't have permission. Nobody reputable has said so. He likely had permission.

Not only do I doubt that he had permission, I would be shocked if he asked for it.
And since we know the outcome, this is the most likely scenario.

I'm kind of fascinated by what he'll do next. He actually got to do all the things he wanted to do and since he's seems kind of burned out on the writing front I'm expecting him to do something different. I mean, how many Friday Picks columns does he really need to write?

I said it before but I think he wants to write/produce a TV show and/or a major motion picture as well as have an original content site that he can monetize ala Huffington Post

Agreed, I think this is a good guess.

Must be KILLING him not to write/discuss about the Clippers playoff fail, Letterman's last show, Deflategate, the final Mad Men episode.

Grantland has up right now "Summer Movie Confessions" with Bill Simmons, Chris Connely, and Wesley Morris. They just posted it today, but it obviously must have been filmed a while back. Still, they are even promoting it on the front page of ESPN so they must be making some sort of exit deal.

And, have to admit, have dropped by Grantland a few times and without him it's pretty boring on the NBA. He's far from perfect, but he's still a distinct cut above.

I think Zack Lowe is damned good.  He is pretty long-winded, and much more technical than Simmons, but I have learned a ton about the X's and O's of the game, as well as salary cap stuff from reading him and listening to his pods over the last couple of years.  His podcast with Russillo yesterday was excellent.

I could actually see Lowe getting an NBA job a la John Hollinger.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like Lowe, too -- and he's much more serious than Simmons -- but I think they were a good combo.

What about the NBA draft? He's been a fixture on ESPN's draft night telecast the past couple of years, and he's always done a pretty entertaining draft night diary (albeit retro ones recently).

Excellent point. They've really taken away a lot of his favorite toys.

An installment of that has gone up every Wednesday since before he was fired. It has been the lead on Grantland each time. It doesn't mean anything, just a realization that Simmons stuff is the best traffic driver.

I'm neither a Simmons fanatic or a diehard NBA fan that watches super closely when my team isn't in the playoffs. But I can't be the only one who misses. Simmons commentary right now.

What do you mean commentary, his podcasts or his written stuff? Because I think that his writing days have been over for some time (and I don't normally listen to his podcasts unless Chuck Klosterman is a guest). My point being, if you read Simmons his expulsion from Grantland/ESPN is pretty much the same as when he was the Editor-in-Chief.

I mean his tweets and every now and then an article. I have to think he'd have had a lot to say about all these storylines and injuries to key players.

I miss him as well, even his presence on tv I miss and I never realized I thought he was good in that venue.  The guys sitting around the table now before/after games just seem kind of morose.

I mean say what you will about Simmons and his annoying pop-culture references, thin skin and what have you. But nobody out there currently is better when it comes to spinning a yarn that's one third snake oil, one third hard analysis and one third gossip. When he writes about other sports or tweets about them often it's only the snake oil and the gossip. But when he writes about the NBA his product becomes very entertaining.

Would love to hear what his take on Thibedeau would be for instance.

Per a source who was at the meeting, Wernick let it slip that Simmons is planning to start an online subscription network of some sort with Jon Stewart, who will cede the Daily Show to Trevor Noah in August. (Stewart, for what its worth, is said to be telling his Daily Show coworkers that he is quitting television to spend more time with his kids.)

Online subscription model = death. That won't work long term. Who really wants to spend money on another Teen Wolf quotes NBA preview?

Oh man, I don't like the sound of this. I like both guys (I really enjoy Stewart a lot) but I highly doubt that I'd pay for a Simmons and Stewart web jammy jam.

You know what he/they should do? Produce daily / weekly sports/culture content for Netflix. Model with a ton of subscriptions, deep pockets, right userbase, and wide open in that format. Would be easy distribution for 30 for 30 -lite or whatever he does.

I'd think Hulu would be a better fit, maybe Yahoo.

I'm curious as to why you think that?
I think that Hulu and Yahoo would love to have Stewart especially with the elections coming up. His shows would have to be live or close to it. Has Netflix ever broadcast anything live?  Simmons could do pop culture  and maybe develop some programming.
