Lots of Portuguese sources now claiming that Luis Diaz will go to Liverpool for something in the range of 45m euro plus another 15-20m euro in add ons. I assume he's the long term Mane replacement, with Jota in the center and Salah getting a new contract.
Thats surprising …Klopp hates January transfers. Are teams allowed to sign players? Is this a thing?

Edit: Lots of reports confirming Diaz. It’s the middle of the night in the UK so nothing from the English press.

Edit #2 … there were reports LFC had rejected some overtures for Minamino … methinks that might be fast tracked now.

If I’m director of football operations for Liverpool, I’m hard pressed to think of a Minamino offer I wouldn’t accept. Pay his wages and chip in whatever it’ll cost to get him headbands in his new side’s color.

Palace reportedly signed JP Mateta to a permanent deal for €10 million instead of the €15 million that was in his loan contract from Mainz. Not sure if this is a domino to letting Benteke go or not. Seems a decent price.

Aubameyang apparently flew to Barcelona on his own to try to get a move there. Neither Arsenal nor Barca knew he was turning up.

Pierre-Emerick Odemwingie?

Four clubs are fighting for the last spot in the top four and none of them have really improved. With the Greenwood news, United are definitely worse than they were a month ago yet don't seem in a hurry to bring anybody into the fold. Arsenal have just shed squad players and don't seem likely to sign anybody, rolling the dice with a thin squad and the dubious duo of Laca/Nketiah as their two senior strikers. Spurs loaned some squad players out of favor with Conte and brought in two other squad players, not really improving on net (at least in the short term). West Ham seem content to make showy bids that have no chance of success.

Maybe something crazy happens but everybody seems to have decided to largely keep their powder dry for the summer rather than paying way over the odds or settling for players that weren't top targets.

Athletic sent me a push notification saying the Aubameyang loan had collapsed because the clubs couldnt come to an agreement on wage structure.

LOL

Aubu seemed done at the club, but you can't keep him around and freeze him out of the squad when there is no depth. Right? RIGHT?

He seems headed for the Ozil zone of cashing checks, playing Fortnite, and going to clubs rather than actually accepting a realistic move elsewhere.

As far as I can tell, the only real offer he had this window was from Saudi Arabia and he turned that down.

I mean they did it to Ozil so why wouldn't they?

Much like Ozil before him, it's not like Aubameyang was actually solving the problems Arsenal was having BEFORE he was binned. Guy has like 4 league goals.

Yeah. They could also use Mika Biereth I guess. He scored a goal a game last year in U18s.

No I'm not really happy that I'm even bringing this up!

It’s crazy day, but it’s floating about that Barca have engaged Chelsea about Dembele so the former can bring in PEA. This doesn’t even need to happen. I just love imagining the total shitshow.

West Ham being in 5th, and through group stages in Europa, having 1 striker on the entire roster, injuries in defense, and not making a single move is wild. Just such short sighted penny pinching.

Seemed like they were trying, but Leeds didn’t want to sell their best players and get relegated and West Ham did not have a Plan B.

I think honestly they thought worst case they could bring back Lingard but MUFC wouldn't allow it.

Overall though... it's a combination of two things:
1. Moyes is often hesitant to make changes, and he's been incredibly picky about strikers (to the point even the incumbant has said they need to bring one in)
2. Sullivan is bad at this, he's just a shit negotiator who thinks he's clever always trying to go loan to buy, or get a "Deal", instead of just paying the money.

Arguably all three of Arsenal, United, and Spurs actually got worse (at least in terms of expected league performance over the next 3-4 months) during the transfer window so you've got that going for you.

In a Bundesliga (and candylandriots) shocker, Union Berlin sold Max Kruse to Wolfsburg (all links currently in German, so just take my word for it). Reportedly they got €5 million for a 33 year-old whose contract ends this summer, so it seems like a good move financially for a team that certainly is not among the upper echelon financially (their biggest transfer in ever was €6 million for Taiwo Awoniyi, which is a historic bargain compared to what Wolfsburg paid for 14 games from Kruse). But it is disappointing to sell certainly the team’s most accomplished/best-known player while currently in a CL spot.

The talk from Union Berlin is that he asked for the transfer because he met a woman from Wolfsburg. Other press is suggesting that Kruse wanted money, and Wolfsburg did extend his contract by a year.

Union definitely does not like squeaky wheels (see: Sebastian Polter: https://www.fotmob.com/news/1jzkircn6ase519ak96g59cknu/union-berlin-striker-sebastian-polter-wont-play-for-club-again-due-to-unsupportive-behaviour)

I don't know--Ndombele is a TALENT loss but hasn't done anything lately, GLC is seemingly always hurt, and Dele is....man, I don't know. You can make a case they weren't bringing anything but some warm bodies.

I think getting those three guys out the door was very smart, even on loan, from a long-run perspective.

But I have a hard time seeing how Bentencur (a very similar player to the three guys Spurs already have in CM) and Kulusevski (intriguing young prospect but still 21 and coming to a new league after several tough years so very unlikely to make an immediate impact) are going to be improvements on them in the short term. I haven't seen news of bringing any other players in but maybe I'm wrong on that.

I think the point is about getting worse. They brought in 2 guys that at least have a chance to contribute and sent out guys who weren’t contributing at all (except maybe Gil in some very very short cameos and he needs playing time, unlike the others that one is an actual loan and I think he’ll be back).

NDombele wasn’t even training with the team.

They didn’t get significantly better by any means, but I don’t see how they got worse.

Liverpool seemed to have lined up Luis Diaz’s successor. They’ve agreed on fee with Fulham with a loan back through end of season. Still need to do the medical and finalize personal terms, but all looks likely.

I'm surprised the winter window is so back-loaded at the deadline. I know "negotiate as good a deal as possible" but you'd think there would be some clubs looking to bring on cash and some looking to bring on players, and unlike most American sports it's strictly "buyers" and "sellers".

Though I suppose the threat of relegation is another factor.

Nor will they allow Lingard to go to Newcastle - even though Rangnick gave his blessing

The Guardian passing along a report that the Carvalho to Liverpool deal did not get done in time. Apparently the medical was conducted, but the paperwork wasn’t finalized and submitted in time.

Reports are that Dortmund is interested in inking the kid to a pre-contract. Any contract signed with an English team this summer will have a few determined by tribunal.

Edit: Andy Hunter confirms that clock ran out on this deal. See you in the summer, Cab!
