Here
The average football fan thinks Gronk's tweet is hilarious. Broncos re-tweeted it right after it came out so it was bound to spread. In the grand scheme of things, it means nothing.

Here
Here's what going to happen tomorrow: Gronk is going to show up early for practice and do his thing. At some point, he's going to run into Belichick in the hallway. Belichick is going to stare him down, Gronk will meet his stare and match. They will each slow down as they approach one another. They will get face to face in a staring contest, and Gronk will make it about 3 seconds before he bites his cheeks to stop from laughing. Bill will continue his death stare and at some point Gronk will have the fear of God instilled in him. They will continue on their separate ways. About 2 strides later, Bill will not be able to keep himself from a half smile and a "fucking Gronk" headshake and that will be that. Gronk goes on to score 2 TD on Sunday.

The narrative will be he called everyone on the Broncos "gay" and that he is a bigot or some such word. I'm sure Andrew (I believe he was the one claiming we are all racists) can fill us in on what the PC climate dictates will happen.

Yep nothing to get upset over here, it is literally the only way a DB has any chance to tackle Gronk. While true that Ward takes it to another level and I'll cringe every time I see it, Harris is 100% correct.
If you want to tackle him Youre better served going for the thighs or hips and wrapping up than hoping you throw him off stride by hitting the knees

It points to, I think, Brady and the Patriots being in the heads of some of the Broncos. TJ Ward is the same way. Won't bother me a bit if some of these guys are more focused on disliking the Pats than they are on doing their jobs
I'd prefer TJ Ward not focusing on what he seems to think his job is, destroying knees.

They do it, because it works.

Baseball has it right, by the way.
How is that? You've got batters poking their asses out to act like a ball's inside, catchers 'framing' pitches to get called strikes, pitchers staring down umps with "where'd that miss", not to mention the dramatized reactions on a close play at a base, each side trying to act like they got it. How many pitchers get a "reputation" of being around the plate, and then stretch that to get calls 3, 6 inches off the plate? I don't think referee gamesmanship is beneath the gentlemanliness of any professional athlete great or small.

Which NY team is still in the playoffs again? I forget.

Must be tough to be the back pages in NY. Gints watching the playoffs, Jets too. Knicks, Rags, Isles all looking into the playoffs from the outside. Brooklyn sucks, Yanks are old, Mets just remembered the bank account is empty. Talking trash at NE is about the only "joy" the Daily News mouthbreathers are likely to get from the sports pages.

That is actually a pretty funny cover. I would love to see Brady's PR make that his pic on social media but of course they won't. Anyone getting upset by that has no sense of humor nor perspective.

Honest question - what are the Pats defenders supposed to do this weekend when Peyton gets pressured and does his standard turtle on the ground routine? Hit him and risk a penalty? Let him get up and throw it again?

I hate the NFL.
Blandino was just on NFLN and said that Peyton wasn't really giving himself up, he was just avoiding the pressure. Unreal.

I feel like even if the Pats fell on him they'd get called for a penalty. Probably just best to put a hand on him and go from there.

I mean, it's pretty homophobic. I don't think it makes him a bigot but I also don't think it's cool. If this were happening under different circumstances people here would not be so cavalier about it.

I get the inference, but couldn't you also read it as him saying that they service him -less a joke about them being homosexual and more of a joke about them being dominated or subservient?

How about: a joke that evidences no particular worldview, where he's just riffing off the material made available to him? I mean, Harris's comments were about 'going low'. You can't spin that into a joke about ocelots or unicorns.

Anyone who approaches a stupid tweet by a professional football player (that contains not one, but two emojis) with anything but a cavalier attitude needs to re-evaluate their perspective. It's worthy of an eye roll, at most.

The more I think about this game, the more I feel like I'm inventing reasons to get worried (injuries aside, of course). The Pats should have comfortably won the game in November with no Edelman and Amendola and Gronk only playing part of the game. Brady should have all of them available all Sunday afternoon. The Broncos get DeMarcus Ware for this game but the Pats also get to face the interception-prone 2015 edition of Peyton Manning this time around. Assuming that NE doesn't lose any of their key contributors before or during the game, I think this veers towards blowout territory. Offensive quick strikes to score TD's and start building a lead. The D lets the Broncos run the ball to start with but Denver is forced to start passing when they fall behind. Peyton inevitably throws a couple of picks and gets benched but the Brockstar can do little more than trade scores with Brady for the rest of the game. The Broncos already had their miracle comeback vs. NE this year and a second one isn't happening Sunday. We will all freak out because no lead ever feels safe in Denver but I just feel like this will be another win that was never as close of a game as it felt at the time.

Here's hoping this is our 2004 ALCS Game Seven, where we blow them out early and get to enjoy ourselves as we count down the minutes to the next step.

The Broncos entire secondary is a bunch of knee-hunters. They took a really dangerous shot on Sunday at a receiver's knee who was landing from a jump-I think Bryant-that was fortunate not to break the guy's leg. Talib does the same thing, low-bridging jumping receivers. Bruschi talked about the very thing on WEEI yesterday, too. They took out both Gronk and Hightower with vicious knee shots in November. I'm sure there will be at least a few attempts on Sunday, but if I was Belichick and any of them connected, I'd be playing tit for tat. Go low on Thomas every time if that's how Kubiak and Phillips want to play things. Brady will certainly have his hands full protecting these receivers, especially Gronk.
This really gets my blood boiling.

Just one more example of how the Broncos have been "fake good" the last couple of years. Ain't so hard to win games when you're taking out the knees of key players.

My dislike for this organization is reaching Jet/Raven/Giant levels. Kill them on Sunday.

Not to pick on you, because this has been said elsewhere many times, but this is bullshit. Any player in the NFL can be tackled in a proper, textbook way. Engage contact and wrap up the legs. I'm sick of "the only way to tackle Gronk is go for the knees".

Let's hope. The only game of the 2004 series I was able to 'enjoy' was game 7. Even then I didn't enjoy the last four innings, too much angst. I almost feel like going to a movie, if they win watch and enjoy on DVR, if they lose erasing it and not reading the sports section for a month.

People need to also remember that it's not just the defense that are knee hunters. The offense, for years since Alex Gibbs, and now with Kubiak back in the fold promoting it, are the champions of the cut block. The reason Hightower is limited (going on 9 weeks since the hit) is because the backup TE Virgil Green hit him with a nasty cut block as he was running down the line going for the RB.

EEI had some ridiculous stat last night:

When NFL teams drop back to pass on 80% or more of the snaps, their W/L record is something like 6-130.

When Tom Brady drops back to pass on 80% or more of his snaps, his W/L record is 6-1.

Flipping through the channels last night and landed on SNY Sports Desk. They said Brady is like The Hulk, you would not like it when he's angry. Basically said Denver were a bunch of idiots for poking the bear. Surprised to hear that from NY media.

Which is largely because if other teams are passing that much it means they're already down multiple scores. But the Patriots actually game plan throwing that much because Tom Brady is God. I know we've all said it over and over again but shit are we spoiled and how sucky is it going to be when he retires.

I was one year out of HS when Jordan retired after the 2nd threepeat and I was devastated to not be able to watch the greatest of all time ply his trade anymore when he was still the best on the planet. Maybe I'll handle it better this time around because I'm more mature (ok I'm definitely not more mature).

Oh please. If Ray Lewis or JJ Watt sent out a tweet before a playoff game calling Brady gay, or if TJ Ward made some crack about all our skill players being cornfed honkies, this whole board would go up in arms calling them neanderthals and assholes. I'm not calling out sick from work to write a Deadpsin post about it, but I would prefer that athletes I support not make gay jokes about the other team. Because there are still plenty of jocks and meatheads out there who think that shit is funny, and that being gay means you're a pansy or a weirdo, and they don't need any encouragement.

Another crazy stat I heard from Merloni today.

Manning, with all the high powered offenses he has been in, has been in 15 playoff games where his opponent has scored 19 points. His record in those games is 3-12. I feel fairly confident that we can score 19 points on Sunday.

And I know, his last W in this scenario was against us in the 2006 AFCC.

I don't know what Merloni is talking about there - he's played in 11 games where his defense held the opposing offense to 19 points or fewer, and he's 9-2 in those games.

Edit: I guess Merloni was saying he's 3-12 when his team gives up more than 19 points? That would make more sense. I probably misinterpreted your post. Carry on!

I think he was saying 19 points or more. He's saying historically if you get to 19 on Peyton in the playoffs you beat him more often than not.

Edit: I'm actually not sure about the "or more" part. I added that on my own.

Isn't it entirely possible that Gronk isn't making any kind of gay inference at all, and he's referring to the Broncos' knee-hunting ways?

I'm not saying that's the case, but this whole thing strikes me as people reading into the tweet what they want to read and getting upset about it because they want something to be upset over.

Yes, this is right. Anytime an opponent has scored 19 or more against Manning in the playoffs, they are 12-3. Sorry, should have been more clear.

FWIW, I count Brady as 11-7 by the same metric (record when team gives up 19 or more in playoffs). About what one would expect.

Yeah, I realized that about 2 minutes after I posted - the game logs show he's right. I definitely have a high degree of confidence in the Pats putting up 20 on a hobbled Denver secondary. I can't wait to get to the Mandalay Bay sports book. Anyone else in Vegas for the game? I think at least one person is (I forget who).

More often than not is not strongly worded enough. His winning percentage is .200. It would be accurate to say, "He loses almost everytime when his defense gives up 19 or more."

That's good, dating back at least to 2015 the Patriots are undefeated in the playoffs in years where a player gives aid to a driver in distress.

“We have great guys around here, no matter the time,” defensive captain Devin McCourty said Wednesday. “They’re always out in the community trying to save people. Darius was really quiet about it, but once the guys on the team got a hold of it, we forced him to give a speech. He explained it very simple: he saw a woman’s car smoking, and he just jumped out of his car. He’ll admit there were probably easier solutions he could have done, but I think it was nice and dramatic to kick in the window and pull her out.”

EDIT: Originally I thought this sounded like he never tried the door, but from ESPN:

"I tried to open the doors and it wouldn't work. ... Guys were like, 'Why didn't you grab a brick? [But] the smoke inside the car started to freak me out, so I can't be like, 'Lady, I'll be right back.' I was kind of like 'get her out of here right now.' That's just what came to my mind."

Not sure why he'd have a brick handy.
