Braxton Berrios WR from Miami pick #210

Combine:
5'9", 184 lbs, 28" arms, 9 1/4" hands
11 bench reps
Pro Day (BB in attendance):
4.44 40, 36 inch vertical, 4.18 short shuttle, 6.72 3 cone

While Berrios is a little stubby and tight-hipped, he has explosive characteristics and shows the ability to uncover and the toughness to make contested catches look easy. Berrios may appeal to teams looking for a slot receiver who can work the middle of the field and attack with intermediate routes. His ability to return punts simply adds to his roster value. Getting caught up with what he can't do rather than what he can do would be a mistake.
CBSsports.com
Small slot wideout with good but not great quickness and yards-after-the-catch ability. Willing to lay his body on the line to make catches with high-degree of difficulty but not consistent in that area. Downfield speed leaves much to be desired.

Here
This kid is awesome, he’s going to be around a while and people will know his name. Quick feet, very good hands, great route-runner, comes up big at the biggest moments. Crazy to me guys like this continue to fall so far, but I will take it.

He actually does sound like Jules. 7th rounder, short, punt returner, has an attitude.

UM fan here, Berrios is going to be a perfect fit for the offense. On my Canes board people have been joking for over a year how he was unquestionably going to be the next Edelman/Amendola for TB to throw to so it wasn't a big surprise to us that the Pats took him.

He had a fairly underwhelming first three seasons and then just exploded last year. We probably would have lost at least two or three more games last season if not for Berrios as he made some critical grabs against FSU and a couple of the other close wins we had. Excellent hands, phenomenal downfield blocker, runs precise routes, and is a fiesty little bastard to boot. He's also a very reliable punt returner but as the joke amongst UM fans has gone the last couple years, I hope you all like fair catches.

I caught a couple of U games last season and recall thinking he is a perfect instrument of torture. And a perfect Patriot.

Completely forgot about him in connection with the draft. The light went on late yesterday. Oh yeah, that guy.

Along similar lines, I got a very similar reaction from a Pats fan who lives in Miami and supports the Hurricanes. He was downright ecstatic that the Pats got Berrios and thinks the Welker/Edelman comps are apt.

He returns punts, right? That could get him on the 46 depending on what happens with Cyrus Jones.
He'll have ST value for sure but I'm not sure it's enough value relative to the other core ST guys to warrant him on the 46. If Cyrus Jones solves Fumbleitis, then it doesn't look like there's room for him. You have to think the WR depth chart will go Edelman, Hogan, Mitchell, Matthews, Britt, Patterson and Dorsett before you even get to Berrios.

According to the UM fan in another thread, he mostly fair catches punts so, yes, he has a shot to stick over the virus.
From the article cgori posted upthread:
"Berrios also is known as one of the most steady punt-return specialists in the nation, having caught 13 punts for 207 yards, a 15.9-yards-per-return average. Had Berrios fielded only three more punts this past season, he would have fulfilled the minimum requirement of 1.2 fielded punts per game to be included in the NCAA statistics among the top three returners in the nation."
SSS, I guess (not sure what number of punts returned one would need to normalize)

It depends, I think. Dorsett, Britt, Matthews, and Mitchell give you nothing on ST, so if they're going to be the fifth WR, it probably makes sense to carry a guy like Berrios instead because even though he's a lesser receiver (on day one), he'll give you some ST that the other won't, and the fifth WR isn't going to play a lot on offense anyway. Dorsett played 0 and 3 snaps in the two playoff games before the Super Bowl, for instance, and he was the fourth WR. Britt was the 5th WR and he wasn't even active. I continue to think Edelman and Hogan are the only roster locks at WR (Slater, too, I guess).

To be the wet blanket we draft a guy like this in the seventh every other year (Austin Carr, Jeremy Ebert, Jeremy Gallon) and it just hasn't worked out in a while; let's hope this one is able to pick up the offense etc.

Yeah, its a bit of a disservice to guys like Jules and Welker when people just assume that a guy like Berrios will be able to follow in their footsteps. If he was highly likely to succeed in this role, he wouldn't have been drafted in the 6th round. The Patriots aren't the only team that can benefit from shifty slot receivers that can uncover against man coverage and move the chains.

I love the pick. But he's an underdog to be a meaningful contributor or to have a significant NFL career.

Remember too that Amendola made the squad every Sunday even with a healthy Jules. He looked "redundant" but week after week BB liked that the offense wouldnt have to change should Edelman get dinged. If that offensive focus is still on a slot guy (IE Edelman is still Edelman). and IF Berrios shows he can be dependable in that role ( big IF) then I think he has a good chance of making it on to the game day roster semi regularly.
Assuming a game day injury to Edelman who is the Slot guy? Or do you think they suck it up for the day?

Well to be fair
Amendola and Wes Welker were undrafted Free Agents and Edelman was a 7th rounder. So yea slot guys are often overlooked.

I get your point though. Its the silly season when Every draftee is going to supplant every vet be better and cheaper.

That's where I see the PR ability as key. That's how Edelman got on the roster as a rookie. There are only like three or four guys a team can redshirt because they need those 7 inactives for injuries most weeks. If Berrios can play ST, he can make the 46. If he can't make the 46, he's got an uphill climb making the 53.

I'm with you--with Amendola out they'll want a steady punt returner. Any candidates other than Berrios and Jones? Dawson?
