Between here and everywhere.
BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today, July 10, that the club has signed defenseman Matt Irwin to a one-year contract through the 2015-16 season worth an NHL cap figure of $800,000.

The 27-year-old Irwin skated in 53 games for the San Jose Sharks in 2014-15, registering eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points with a plus-three rating. In three seasons with San Jose, Irwin has competed in 153 NHL contests racking up 16-34=50 totals with 63 penalty minutes. The blueliner has 13 games of NHL postseason experience, playing 11 games in the 2013 playoffs and two games in the 2014 playoffs, where he has chipped in one goal and one assist.

I don't know much about him. Seems like a 7th D type though.

Well, he can score against Holtby and Price.

I saw him a lot a couple years ago in Worcester, has a bomb of a shot.  I think he's good enough to pencil into that third pairing right now, barring a huge surge from Morrow, Miller, Trotman, etc, in camp.

UMass grad and could be top six guy for sure. Good skating and offensive skills, has good size but isn't overly physical, not a great 'defensive' defenseman instinctively. Good signing- potential top six guy for <1m, or better #7 than they had last season.

I'm the same but regarding 6/7th D, they seem to have a lot of options. Irwin, Miller, Miller, Morrow and Trotman will only have two open spots barring a trade.

On that note, a trade would make sense given their numbers. Especially if they could upgrade two nickels to a dime. Their d would be good with one more 2nd pair dman.

So the B's now have 7 D on one way contracts: Chara, Seids, Krug, McQuaid, K. Miller, Trotman, Irwin. That leaves guys like Morrow, C. Miller, and Casto as almost definitely headed for Providence until K Miller and/or McQuaid get hurt.

I was curious about Colin Miller and Joe Morrow, but I also don't want to see them rush those guys up. Despite this, it shouldn't be long until they are called up as one of Miller and McQuaid almost surely will get hurt before it turns to 2016.

Irwin has very good underlying numbers. 1.12 p/60, 0.53 g/60, 51.6 CF% at ES on a mediocre team. By comparison, his offensive rates are actually higher than Krug, who posted 0.94 p/60, 0.43 g/60 but a higher CF % at 52.8. Irwin's offensive numbers were all tops amongst San Jose defenseman. He does appear to be sheltered, only 30% D zone starts last year. Certainly has offensive upside though the D zone is likely an issue.

Not sure that's being read correctly. Just browsing through players, the TOI has him listed as bottom pairing (because of, again, how long he's on the ice), but all of the other stats seem to indicate he should have been getting more ice time.

~2.5M of cap space now means ~5.5M or so around cap time.  Having the flexibility to make one good move if it can make a difference can be key to making a run.  Vermette to Chicago was on OK deal.  Kaberle in 2011 was not (results nonwithstanding).

This sentence makes no sense. Disregarding the results of the trade, the result of the trade was poor!

It's hard not to like this signing.  Cheap depth defenseman.  I think they learned last year you can never have enough depth.  If they could only use him and McQuaid to combine into one D man they'd have a top 4 defenseman.

Yeah, he definitely meant the season results do not mean it was a good trade.

It's certainly arguable that overall Kaberle was a net negative and they might have done better without him, but it would have to be based on his shitty, shitty regular season play.  His production was ok and in line with what he'd done the last few years, but his possession numbers were atrocious (even when taking the fact that he made more D zone starts than O zone starts into account): mid 40s Corsi and low 40s Fenwick with a relative Corsi around -8 and a relative Fenwick around -10.  His possession stats were much better in the postseason, however, low 50s Corsi and FF and positive relative Corsi figures and 11 assists in 25 games is not too shabby.

Anywho, I'm with the rest of the board, Irwin is a good depth guy to have.  I assume he takes Bartkowski's place as the puck-moving extra D who's weak on defense.  Hopefully he plays better than Bart.

What kind of dirt was McQuaid blackmailing Sweeney with to get that contract.  Depth on defense is looking pretty good right about now.  I think we could have managed without McQuaid.
