Wonder if Coyle moves up to 2RW and Johansson centers the 3rd line? Or they leave it as is and go:

Marchand - Bergeron - Heinen
DeBrusk - Krejci - Pastrnak
Johansson - Coyle - Backes/Cehlarik
Nordstrom - Kuraly - Wagner

I like your option. That 3rd line is dramatically improved and a deep and solid top 9. Then you can always load up at the end of games if you need goals.

If only Backes could get his form back, they'd be really formidable.

Am I weird for probably wanting Johansson over Simmonds?

I think Johansson is unquestionably better 5x5 than Simmonds. I dig it, especially given the price and that Johansson is a candidate to be extended

You'd be better off bringing Recchi back.

This is a great move. The Bruins should now be able to withstand the onslaught of usual injuries in the playoffs too. Depth baby.

They have so many options with the lines now.

Simmonds value is heavily on the PP and he would not be a fit with Pasta, so you're not crazy at all TFP

It's underwhelming but Mojo is a pretty serious upgrade on Cehlarik on the 3rd line. He and Coyle should turn that line into a decent possession line that can play 15 min a night.

The B's have $10m in cap space, no reason to give up bargaining position in this trade for salary retention other than Jacobs being a cheap fuck (shocker I know)

I really wasn’t expecting them to spend to the cap this year with the garden remodel going on. It’s the price of being in one of the only states that (rightfully IMO) doesn’t expend public funds to subsidize new stadiums for teams owned by billionaires.

Edit- nevermind, I didn’t realize that they had potential bonus cushion issues. That makes sense.

Yeah I do not understand the salary retention part of the deal. Not sure I buy it being because Jacobs didn’t want to spend to the cap.

Still, I like the deal. Paid a fair amount in a 2nd, but they are a better team than yesterday.

Yeah I was just coming to post that. While they have the space this year they definitely don't want it eating into next year, which makes sense.

They turned their 3rd line from a liability to a strength this week, so all in all a positive deadline. Stone would’ve moved the needle but we didn’t have a prospect that would’ve made Ottawa deal him in the division other than McAvoy, which would’ve created a huge hole on our team. I definitely didn’t want to give him a 9.5 AAV contract for 8 years.

The retention is to give them a cushion for potential bonuses from ELC players.
Good call, I decided to take a look as I thought they had enough cap space / not enough players hitting their performance total figures to have that be a concern.

Maximum potential performance bonuses for 2018-19 on the roster:

McAvoy: $500,000
DeBrusk: $425,000
Heinen: $212,500
Cehlarik: $132,500
Frederic: $125,000
Lauzon: $107,500
Kuhlman: $25,000
Bjork: $0
Carlo: $0
Clifton: $0
Forsbacka-Karlsson: $0

Donato has $850,000 in potential bonuses, but given he didn't hit anything outside of 30+ games played for major counting stats, I would doubt he hits more than $200,000 of that. Vaakanainen has a potential $500,000 but he has 2 games played, so not expecting anything there. Even McAvoy missing a bunch of time probably knocks him down to $200,000-$300,000 max. I think $600k between DeBrusk, Heinen, Cehlarik, Frederic, Lauzon, and Kuhlman is reasonable to estimate.

All in, they're probably still looking at a max of ~$1.3m in performance bonuses, worst case scenario - if Johansson didn't have salary retained, they'd start to get within $600k of that ~$3m remaining figure, but as it stands I don't see any way they get close to eating up the rest of that space.

On one hand, better safe than sorry, and they have obviously a clearer picture of the bonus triggers than I do, but I can't help but be cynical about what looks to be a cash-saving provision for Jacobs.

I would have happily paid that contract. The issue is the Bruins just don't have Brannstrom. Not even close. I wanted Stone badly but it doesn't look like they could have matched without giving up a roster player since they don't have anyone with that kind of value.

Yep, this is exactly what I would do, huge upgrade on the black hole of a 3rd line with Coyle & Johansson. Heinen is much better playing with Bergy & Marchand.

This deadline really isn't dissimilar to picking up Kelly and Peverley. They are different style players than Coyle and Johansson, but getting 3rd line players than can provide top 6 depth and multi-position flexibility to make them a deeper team seems to be pretty close.

I would guess they view Coyle as a long term 2/3 center for them. Johansson seems more of a pure rental, but you never know. He’s a good defensive forward with skill, and we know the Bruins love two way guys.

The Coyle/Donato trade did remind me a bit of the Wheeler trade, but Coyle is a bit younger and has more pedigree.

This is a sneaky good move for the Bruins. They are as deep all around as anyone in the league, and might even have enough to beat Tampa with some better reffing and some puck luck.

Two useful NHL vets added this week that will allow the Bruins to roll three lines and pick spots for the fourth. The only NHL player they gave up was Donato. Nice work by the front office.

We’ll see tomorrow, but it sounds like MoJo starts on Krejci’s wing. Probably some mixing and matching with Pasta out and Coyle will get a look too.
