Yes I hope he does. Kase now makes one of the young wings expendable.
If they do that, you can think of it like cashing in on the surplus of left shot players they have been playing on their off wing and essentially replacing one of them with Kase.

When he's on the ice, he's been good. But he's been injured a lot the last 2 seasons and hasn't played in 2 weeks. If this is Sweeney's big upgrade, it's a big gamble for this year IMO.
How is it a big gamble for "this year" when the only on-ice player we're losing is Backes? This is exactly the kind of guy you take a shot at.

Not the move I thought they would make, but interested to see if they hold him or there is something else coming. I like the move though.

If Sweeney thinks that they need to upgrade the roster to better compete with Washington and Tampa and Kase is his choice to do so, it's a gamble with his injury history. He has an extensive concussion history and is coming off a torn labrum that ended his season last year

But you're comparing him to other players where we have no idea what they would have cost or if they'll even be dealt.

They are at 24 players on the roster right now. I’m guessing they’ll demote Kuhlman or Lauzon before tonight’s game.
Can they wait until he arrives? Or is he automaticaly on the roster when traded?

Anyone know how the cap hit changes for next year if he is bought out?

I assume not much

Kase won’t join the team until they get back to Boston on Monday.

My guess is he goes on IR. He was practicing with Anaheim but hasn’t played since 2/7 so they can retro it.

I can't be critical of Sweeney/Charlie for this move. If Bloom/Henry would have made this deal, they would have sent Pasta instead of Anderson and retained 50% of Backes' salary instead of 25%. And in 2020, Price is a better pitcher than Backes is a hockey player. That's how I'm choosing to look at it.

Let's go win the Cup. Hopefully Kase will be an important part of that happening.

Retaining salary is not ideal, but 25% is more than acceptable. I can live with it.

Here's to hoping to years of health for Kase

Absolutely love non-rentals whenever possible and I love what it says about how Sweeney thinks and runs the team. Almost always ends up costing not much more than rentals. Often tougher to pull off because teams are less likely to move guys with term, but when it works out, it can be huge. And high-price rentals, if you don't win it all...ugh.

Can't speak to the player in particular but I trust Don.

Does this make it easier to re-sign Krug, or did they not free up enough room?
They have about ~19 million in space for next year. Krug, DeBrusk, Grzelyck are the big ticket items. Bjork and Kuhlman need new deals but shouldn’t be expensive. I assume Chara will sign another $2 million + incentives contract if he wants to keep playing.

They should have the room to sign him if they want, but I think they’ll have to lose some money somewhere. But I’ve said that for about 2 years now and they keep finding ways to keep pretty much everyone they want to.

Let's stick to hockey and leave your front office Red Sox anger issues analogies to your blog or FB.

Thanks.

I like it, and the more I think about it, the more I like it. Bruins got some financial flexibility (maybe for this deadline, certainly for this offseason) and got a young player with term, one who will assuredly help with the team's improving possession game (which has been mediocre for most of the season) and may help with the team's biggest issue, converting scoring chances. I'm also looking forward to the down-roster effects: I think a line of Bjork-Coyle-Kuhlman has a ton of potential.

In the meantime, thank you David Backes. Yeah, I didn't like his deal and it was sad to see his precipitous decline, but by all accounts, he's been great in the room and a class act all around. If he had complaints about his lack of playtime, he was very professional about it. Hoping he can avoid any further head trauma and play out the rest of his career in good health.

The more I think about it, the more I like this trade. Based on the Zucker and Coleman deals, the going rate for a winger with term was a first round pick and a top prospect (Addison and Foote were in the 45-50 range overall in some rankings). Kase’s younger than both those players and arguably better than Coleman and has the highest upside if he hits. His health is the main question mark. The Bruins paid the requisite first round pick but Andersson is not in the same class of prospect of those other 2 guys, and they also offloaded 75% of Backes’ cap hit.

He's 4 for 5 in shootout attempts this year, which makes him already the best SO player on the team. Career 50% in the SO.
I think that was worth the prospect by itself. The team's chances of winning a SO just increased drastically...assuming Cassidy runs him out there now that he has the option.

Yep, quick hands down low and a nice shot from near the boards. Plus, at least in the clips, he looks like he plays fast

I'm going to be honest, I don't think I've ever heard of him.

Which probably means he's going to go out and win the Conn Smythe this year.

I like it. Get rid of 75 percent of the Backes millstone. Add a young player they think can flourish in a new environment and is under control for multiple years. Hopefully this is coyle 2.0

The Bruins have a ton of depth and options at forward right now. Going forward, they have the ability to mix and match when everyone is healthy (if they stand pat), but also they don't have a specific need in the trade market anymore. They can get the best player available, or make the deal they think is the best value, without worrying about position. As it stands right now, Nordstrom is probably the odd man out. My ideal lines:

Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak
DeBrusk-Krejci-Kase
Bjork-Coyle-Kuhlman
Heinen-Kuraly-Wagner

"BOSTON - New Bruins winger Ondrej Kase hit the ice for his first practice with the Black & Gold on Monday morning at Warrior Ice Arena, skating alongside David Krejci and Jake DeBrusk as the second-line right wing.

"He's a good player," said Krejci. "He can skate, he can play…he's fast, he can score. Hopefully he'll fit in well and help the team…met him once last year in Prague. We hung out and had a good time."

The Czech native has not played since Feb. 7 because of flu-like symptoms but was a full participant in his first on-ice session with the Bruins and said following practice that, "I feel really good."

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy suggested, however, that the winger may not be in the lineup on Tuesday night against the Calgary Flames.

"I don't know if he's gonna play tomorrow, to be honest with you," said Cassidy. "I think he'd like to get a few more reps here with us. That deal is as much for the playoffs and moving forward - whether it's Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, we'll get a look at him."
