Is people mangling themselves this way a new thing or are we just hearing more about it this year?

ESPN reporting:
Wilson, 25, is the second NFL player to suffer injuries during a fireworks accident over the Fourth of July weekend.

Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul suffered hand injuries during a fireworks accident in Florida last weekend and remains in the hospital.

Wilson is in the final season of his two-year deal that carries a nonguaranteed base salary of $585,000 for the 2015 season.

He appeared in two games last season and was credited with four tackles.

On the one hand, Ronnie Lott had a portion of his pinkie chopped off to play in a playoff game.  On the other, he's no Ronnie Lott.

More famous people are being injured this year, statistics continue to rise and the injuries are becoming more and more horrific due to(IMO) larger(in shell size and power) consumer fireworks.  These two are among the lucky ones, the early statistics are trending toward a reversal of the down tick in injuries 2014 and show 2015 might be the year that those pushing towards outlawing fireworks nationally get their traction.  A quick google search will show you all you need to know about horrific fireworks injuries, I'm personally torn as I've assisted with professional displays and done consumer displays for years with no injuries, but as a FF and EMT I understand the horrible life altering injuries.  But my love for fireworks wins every time.  Every pro I have helped has said it's not if but when they have an incident which is why almost all are controlled electronically from a safe distance with no reloading of tubes, consumers are just trending about 10 years behind the pros in safety improvements.

I have been doing large consumer shows for the last 10 years without injury because I know what the F I am doing.  It just kills me the number of people that I see in fireworks stores that are wandering around stores that have no clue what they are looking for.  The scariest thing is when these people buy a 24 pack of excaliburs as there is a high chance they are going to put two tubes side by side....unattached to anything....and try to light them both at the same time.  This ALWAYS resorts in the first tube firing and the second tube falling over and firing.

To me the issue is not the fireworks being bad, it's the fact that there is ZERO safety information about how to handle fireworks.  A simple page with instructions such as 'do not light more than one mortar at a time unless each tube is fixed to a base' and 'be at least 10 feet away from all fireworks before they explode as misfires can happen', 'always place blocks around cake items prior to firing to prevent tipping', 'never relight a dud' and my favorite 'DO NOT PLACE YOUR HEAD OVER A FIREWORK FOR ANY REASON'.

It's a people thing.

Edit:  And don't do this:

Go on Youtube and see the morons that put firecrackers in their assholes, put them in stoves or microwaves, set them off in a closed garage etc.

I don't know what it is with this new generation. I know it's been said by every other generation about the preceding one, but we have video proof that this is the dumbest one yet.

No, we just don't have video evidence of the stupidity of previous generations. Do you think people losing fingers playing with fireworks is a new thing?

I feel bad for JPP and CJ Wilson, but they're adults who have a lot of money and who are responsible for their own decisions. The story about the 9 year old boy who lost his hand playing with fireworks is tragic.
