Cam Newton signs with Carolina

I wonder if they would bring him back. Obviously he’s got enough stature to want to look around first.

Edit: This could be a thing the Pats are doing out of respect for Newton. Rather than make him the #2, they give him a chance to go look for a better job first.
Maybe Cam asked for his release rahter than be #2?

Are any other veteran/interesting QBs not expected to make it through today's cuts? I imagine Can will sign elsewhere so he won't be around if Mac or Hoyer gets hurt in Week 6 or something.

Too bad they didn't make the move for Gardner Minshew. Eagles got him for a conditional 6th.
Yeah, as other said, I'm sure BB would have made a play for Minshew if he valued him. I like Minshew fine, but I just want one of the 127 QBs who would be an upgrade over Hoyer.

The QB would have to be better than Stidham. I don't think Joe Flacco qualifies.

Wow, that was not the way I expected this to play out. BB really does go with whatever move he believes gives them the best chance. Will be interesting if this ends up similar to the locker room reaction to Lawyer Milloy and the ensuing Bills game. ~2 weeks gives him plenty of time to let the team process this.
All of the buzz from teammates around Jones has been super positive. They all love Cam but I think they all know Jones is the future too.

I'm sure we'll get an IG post from Cam soon. In that weird font.

Not to be a fly in the ointment, but count me as someone who wanted to see Mac holding a clipboard this year and learning everything he can. Obviously we had Bledsoe and Brady was far less heralded, but that plan sure didn't hurt him even that plan occured by accident.

This team is in GFIN mode. There's no way they get it with Cam Newton at the helm. Everything we've seen, read, and heard from coaches, reporters, and teammates indicates Mac Jones gives them the best chance to win right now. And very likely in the future as well.

This is great news.

I hear ya, but it really is a different era in the NFL now when it comes to young QBs. These guys have exponentially more training than they did 20-30 years ago, and Mac in particular played like a guy with at least a couple years of pro experience this preseason. Much more viable for a rookie to step in and play from day 1. Especially on a team that has a strong OL.

Holy shit, didn't see this coming.i shouldn't be surprised. This is the same Belichick who replaced Bernie Kosar, sat Drew Bledsoe, and didn't mortgage the future of the entire roster by paying an exorbitant contract to Brady. When he says "do what is best for the team" he means it. Honestly, that's refreshing. Good luck to Cam, he deserves a shot with another team.

I am shocked. I didn't expect Cam to be the starter by Week 8, but I thought that he'd hold down the fort until at least after the Bucs game. I was convinced that BB didn't want to throw Jones into that shitstorm, but wow.

I don't think you can really make this comparison. Brady was a 6th round pick and was probably a better bet to get cut than even make the roster his rookie year. Mac is a first rounder, in today's NFL first round QBs start their rookie years, particularly when the incumbent was hot garbage the year before. Not to say a red-shirt year wouldn't have benefitted Mac, maybe it would have. Just think the comparison to Brady's situation doesn't hold water.

While Cam seemed to be well liked in the locker room, I don't imagine he had the same emotional status with his team mates that a longtime veteran like Milloy had. Also, Hightower and others went out their way to compliment Mac on his poise, confidence, work ethic, etc. Seems like he's got good support in there. I doubt this is any kind of team morale issue.

Maybe. To me, GFIN mode would include some A-list receivers. Agholor and Meyers do not scream Lombardi to me. And can Jalen Mills produce near a Gilmore level until he returns?

I'm not saying the plan is bad, I'm just not sold that enough pieces are in place to justify throwing Jones into the fire.

I'm very surprised. Not by Mac's ascension, but by how this is shaking out. I'm like many of you - I thought that this would happen several weeks into the season, not right away. I'm stunned. But wow, LFG!!!!

So is this a veteran respect move for Cam? Because I'd much rather have Cam as the backup than Hoyer.
Yes this exactly. Hoyer is awful. Weren't going to pay much to Cam as the backup. Seems like a locker room move. Meh. (But I hated Cam as starting QB so at least I know I don't have to watch that, but I'd hate Hoyer more)

In some ways the Zolak garbage makes me angrier now. Cam's last week shouldnt have been marred by that shit.
Oh please...

Ever think that maybe Cam should "not" have been dancing around like an extra in Grease 2?

Ever think that this franchise was "the" example of 'just stay under the radar' and win while avoiding the banging of cymbals?

Cam marred?!!

I'm happy this franchise isn't marred.

To me his act was embarrassing.

Who were the Giants' best receivers when they won their SBs?
Who were the Eagles' best receivers when they won the SB?
Who were the Ravens' best receivers when they won either of their SBs?

Yesterday I looked up how old Bledsoe was when Brady replaced him to compare to Cam. I was kind of shocked to see Bledsoe was 29 and Cam is three years older.

Good. Everything was clunkier when Cam was on the field. Also, I bet a huge factor was that Bill wanted to eliminate the possibility of getting a phone call at 9pm on Friday that Cam violated protocol and would be ineligible for Sunday after a week of specific game planning suited to him.

I'm surprised Cam's gone but not necessarily that Mac won the job.A mid-season takeover is hard to pull off. I remember back in 2001 when Bledsoe was coming back from his injury and they had a week (Rams week?) where he split reps with Brady in practice. I believe Bill said that was a mistake and it doesn't serve the teams best interest to split reps. So it was hard to envision that sort of scenario playing out this year between Mac and Cam. I think it was now or next year for Mac, and they feel he's ready now. I'm a little surprised they aren't keeping Cam around as a hedge, but it also removes any doubt in Mac's mind that it's his team and stops the weekly questions about Cam if Mac struggles.

Clearly, the most exciting thing about this move is what it says about BB's opinion of Mac. He's ready to go all-in. A rookie QB is being handed the reins with absolutely no safety net whatsoever. They have to be really, really impressed with him to do that. How many of us would have ever imagined the Patriots would find a rookie QB they had that much faith in so quickly?
